Orleans Conservation Trust is excited to announce another land protection project! We are working with neighbors to prevent development of the last undeveloped lot on Shoal Pond in South Orleans. The 1.1-acre wooded lot at 1 Boulder Lane has 160 feet of pond shoreline and expands upon OCT's highly popular Twinings Pond Conservation Area.

Protecting this land will:

  • Preserve critical wildlife habitat, protecting a connection between Shoal and Twinings Ponds
  • Safeguard water quality (freshwater and saltwater)
  • Preserve the viewshed for the neighborhood along almost 400 feet of frontage on Lake Drive and Boulder Lane

This last buildable lot in the highly coveted Quanset Harbor Club was slated for development, so OCT was forced to negotiate a market rate purchase with a short closing period. We're working with neighbors and area residents to raise $937,500 by June 30, 2025. Thanks to early donors, we're more than halfway there!

You can read more and support this exciting project here.

OCT has become much more aggressive in pursuing market rate purchases for strategically selected properties in recent years, serving as a counterbalance to ceaseless development pressure. We are often forced to act quickly and accept some carefully managed risks, including securing loans that allow us time to fundraise to protect important open space. You can enable more of these projects by making a donation to OCT's Land Acquisition Fund. Donate here and specify Land Acquisition as the gift purpose.

Thank you for your support!

Orleans Conservation Trust is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1970. Over its 50-year history, the Trust has preserved more than 660 acres in Orleans. Among the most active land trusts on Cape Cod, OCT stewards a range of ecosystems, from freshwater ponds and wetlands to saltmarshes, wooded upland, and coastal grasslands, managing its lands to protect and enhance wildlife habitat, restore native ecosystems, and provide public recreation and education through a network of trails and informational signage. OCT also educates residents and visitors about important natural values and environmental issues in Orleans and around Cape Cod via guided walks, free lectures, its website, newsletter, and other communications.
