Halsa Aquaculture Research Services

Peter Sykes started HALSA Aquaculture Research Services from his home in Nova Scotia back in 2013.
During this time, Peter enjoyed working with various shellfish and finfish producers throughout the
province in his role as R&D coordinator with the AANS. Working directly with farmers to advance the
aquaculture industry has always been Peter’s passion.

In HALSA’s first few years, Peter frequently travelled to Louisiana, where he worked as a consultant on
an alligator farm, which was eventually purchased by Hermes of Paris. In 2017, Peter and his family
moved to Louisiana, where he took on the role of farm director, leading the newly acquired farm
through a significant growth phase. There he oversaw the addition of new infrastructure and new
technologies to improve the health and productivity of the alligators while documenting production
processes to achieve international-level farm certification.

Family brought Peter home to Nova Scotia, and the pandemic has kept him here! Back in Nova Scotia
again, HALSA is branching out to help sea farmers overcome production challenges. Incorporating site-
specific monitoring processes to facilitate the collection of meaningful production information, and
innovating production processes based on this data. Creating data-driven production monitoring systems
based on real-world metrics is the basis of HALSA aquaculture.
New look for our newsletter!
As you can see, the newsletter looks a little different this time around - that's because we've switched hosts! From now on, our newsletters will be sent out by Constant Contact instead of Mailchimp. This change will allow for more diverse newsletters and greater organization.

We plan to give a more modern feel to more of our content in the coming days, including a refresh of our seafarmers website to better serve our members and the industry. We'll be sending out more information about what that means for you soon. Keep an eye on your inbox!

Canada's Ocean Supercluster has created a directory map depicting over 1,900 ocean-based businesses across Canada. On the map, there's a section just for fisheries and aquaculture - you can find us there!

Seafarmers 2022 Magazine
Opening for entries soon!
The Seafarmers Magazine is returning in 2022 - just in time for the conference! Starting in May, we're going to begin accepting advertising and content for the next issue of our in-house magazine.

This issue is anticipated to be completed and handed out at the Seafarmers and Minister's Conference in October. If you're interested in showcasing your stuff, keep an eye out for future updates next month.
Conference Update
The Ministers and Seafarmers' Conference is still on track for October 12-13, 2022. At the present time, more than 70% of booths are filled, but there is still space available if you are interested in a spot. There are also sponsorships available.

NSBI Export Development Program

Local Seafood Recipe

Salmon
It only seems right to feature a salmon recipe after we've been speaking about it, doesn't it? Try this recipe from Andy's East Coast Kitchen with a side of potatoes or spinach salad.
Ingredients

Salmon

  • 1 large salmon filet
  • 1 cedar plank, soaked for at least 4 hours

Marinade

  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp grainy dijon mustard
  • 1 inch fresh ginger, sliced
  • ½ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 peach, diced
  • 1 tbsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
Instructions

  • This will take a bit of planning but it’s easy peasy! Start by soaking the cedar plank in the sink overnight. This will avoid the plank going up in flames! Place the salmon in a plastic freezer bag and pour in all of the ingredients for the marinade. Place in the fridge and let sit overnight so the flavours can get all cozy together.

  • Once you are ready to cook, take the fish out of the freezer bag and pour all of the marinade into a small pot. Place the pot over medium heat and let reduce for 10 mins. This will be a nice glaze to brush on the salmon. Brush remaining marinade off the salmon and place fish skin side down on the soaked cedar plank.

  • Now, let’s get the grill rocking. Bring temperature of the grill up to 350 and place the planked salmon on the grill; close the lid. Let cook for 20-30 mins. It’s always nice to have a spray bottle of water close by just in case the wood does catch fire.

  • After the fish is done (internal temp at 130) remove from grill and serve directly on the plank!
