Dearest Church Family,
We had a wonderful Palm Sunday celebration! I enjoyed parading outside the sanctuary with our palm leaves. The kids enjoyed hunting for eggs and appreciated Ms. Debby's generous goody bags. The Potluck was outstanding. I think we all went home with full bellies! Thank you to everyone who helped make it a meaningful day!
It is tempting to jump from celebrating Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, right to the resurrection. After all, who doesn't love a party? However, the space between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday is worth lingering in, now more than ever. Palm Sunday is simply the beginning of a long week, called Holy Week. It is worth our time to pay attention to the significant events that happened during that week. After all, there is no resurrection without the crucifixion.
This year, we will blend some of the traditional elements of Holy Thursday and Good Friday into one service.
Together we will share a simple meal, travel from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion, and finally to the Tomb. Even if you can't attend our Holy Week Service, I pray you find a moment to remember. Remember the Lord's Supper and remember what Jesus suffered. Not to feel guilty but to appreciate and learn from his commitment to love and nonviolence.
Please enjoy this poem from our series, Everything in Between.
Power Like a Seed
In a world that wants power like a machine gun,
power like a bomber plane,
power like a gated fence to keep the hungry out,
I want power like a seed—
power that will crack me open and grow something good;
power like an open door,
an invitation that says, “Come on in;”
power that feels like a strong spine with a soft heart.
I want the power to listen, to lean in, to ask follow-up questions.
But more than anything, I want the power to bring us together, to lift you up.
There are different kinds of power.
One will build a wall.
One will plant a garden.
We should know by now, only one will bear fruit.
Wishing you all a meaningful Holy Week.
