Insight

Start where you are. I make my bed. It’s part of my daily routine. I like routines and I like change. Even more, I like to combine the two. When it comes to progress, the two are necessary—and both ask something of you.

The same is true for learning. You don’t have to master everything at once. Small, stackable training—one short course, one skill at a time—adds up. Each tiny step moves you forward, building skills and confidence for what’s next.

Worth a Read

Atomic Habits by James Clear A book I've gifted myself and others (including my sons - whether they asked for it or not) and The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins -  a book that recognizes change is hard, emphasizes personal responsibility, and uses science to help us make it happen.

Perspective

Notes from my chat with Nikki Kay, Career Advisor

A highlight of working at MHC is the opportunity to collaborate and learn alongside so many thoughtful and insightful colleagues. Nikki's work helps learners feel confident and ready for career success. She's a friendly face in the hall with insights that help those she meets to get jobs and build careers. I headed over to her office to get her thoughts on what she thinks are the most important workplace skills to have. Here's what she shared, and it reminds me that "the little things" never go out of style. Thanks for sharing your intel, Nikki.

She said "it's in the little things" as she grabbed the Skills Profiles of jobs in demand in Alberta and regions (Second quarter 2025) and handed it to me across her desk. Within industries such as healthcare, trades, and agriculture, some of the top skills employers seek are teamwork, Microsoft Office proficiency, and flexibility.

She added, genuine soft skills, open communication, positive online presence, displaying humility and integrity and adaptability are some of the most notable attributes that make candidates and employees stand out.

According to Nikki, a growth mindset makes all the difference. Learning new skills can be uncomfortable—but that’s exactly how we grow and prepare for new opportunities.
