Shawn’s commitment to public service was inspired by his father, Norman Crossman, who entered municipal politics in 1969 and became Mayor of Lewisville, a community in the greater Moncton area, in 1973. His father served on council continuously until his passing in 2008 and was recognized at that time as Canada’s longest-serving municipal politician.
In 1999, Shawn founded his own sales and marketing company, which he continues to operate today. Motivated by his father’s legacy and a desire to give back to his community, Shawn was first elected to Moncton City Council in 2012 as a councillor. Over the past 14 years, he has also served as Deputy Mayor for six terms before his recent election as Mayor of Moncton in 2026.
Shawn was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in July 2018 and underwent a stem cell transplant in January 2019. He is currently in remission with stable disease and remains on maintenance therapy. With the support of his wife and daughter, he maintains an active lifestyle and manages his condition successfully.
A dedicated advocate for the myeloma community, Shawn established Moncton’s first myeloma support group and helped launch the city’s first Myeloma March in 2019. This year, he helped launch the first Myeloma Canada Ride in Moncton. His advocacy amongst government officials has also played an important role in improving access to myeloma treatments in New Brunswick. In recognition of all his efforts, he received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in 2022.
We are fortunate to have Shawn representing the Atlantic provinces on the Patient Advisory Council.
