Safety Topic: Poisonous Plants & Insects
Please pay attention to your surroundings - especially if you work in a heavily vegetated or forest area - as there are several plants and insects that could cause you harm.

Check yourself frequently for bites or insects (such as ticks embedded in your skin), and let your manager know if you discover one.

Some examples of plants to be on the lookout for are:
Poison Ivy can cause a rash even through indirect contact. This may happen when you touch clothing, a pet who has it on their fur, tools, or other objects that have come in contact with the plant. The two most definitive traits of poison ivy or poison oak are:
  1. Three leaflets on each compound leaf
  2. A red coloration where the three leaves connect.
Wild Parsnip grows along roadsides, can grow up to 4 feet tall, and can look much like a cultivated parsnip. The stem is hollow, with vertical grooves running its full length. The stem and its multi-toothed leaves are a yellowish-green color. It has flat-topped flower clusters with yellow petals. There is a chemical in Wild Parsnip that can destroy cells and skin tissue.
Wild Chervil (aka Cow Parsley) leaves are alternate, very finely divided, fern-like, and slightly hairy. The flowers are small and white with 5 petals, and they grow in umbels (umbrella shape) that can be about 3 inches wide. Wild Chervil sap can cause a chemical burn on the skin when it is exposed to sunlight.
