A Primer on Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines

In April 2026 or 2027, public schools across the United States are required to ensure that the digital educational materials they provide, as well as most of their other web and digital materials, are accessible.  



While accommodating individual students’ needs is still a requirement, when it comes to the edtech students need, states and local school districts must begin addressing accessibility from the start, if they haven’t already.

With the digital accessibility compliance deadlines for the updates to ADA Title II  approaching, educators might feel overwhelmed. How do they ensure that their students receive accessible materials? 



Education leaders in Aurora, Colorado blazed a trail through legal requirements, technical hurdles and educational needs—and thanks in part to their work, the path may be easier for other districts to follow.

Technical Assistance for SEAs and LEAs 


NCADEMI’s targeted technical assistance (TA) for state and local educational agencies (SEAs and LEAs) launches soon!


Now is a great time to consider enrolling.


Our virtual Professional Learning Group (PLG), beginning in February 2026, offers one year of targeted TA to help SEA and LEA teams improve digital accessibility for learners with and without disabilities.

NCADEMI's webinar series prepares state and local education teams to implement NCADEMI's Quality Indicators for the Provision and Use of Accessible Materials in PreK–12 Systems, and to lay the groundwork for those considering our year-long targeted technical assistance beginning in February 2026.


NCADEMI's Braille Accessibility in State Assessments recorded webinar introduces a new guide from NCADEMI and the OCALI AT&AEM Center. The session highlights how state and local education agencies and assessment vendors can use this resource to create accessible assessment systems for braille readers.



Events


Watch for us at ATIA! NCADEMI staff will present a pre-conference workshop and three sessions during the Assistive Technology Industry Association conference in Orlando, Florida. The workshop, Digital Doesn’t Equal Accessible: Moving from Misconception to Meaningful Access, is offered at a discounted registration of $125 per person. Registration is limited. Graduate Research in Accessible Science  


Are you considering a doctoral degree in education? Are you interested in making high school science more accessible to blind and low-vision students? Dr. Natalie L. Shaheen is recruiting a doctoral student for the 2026–2027 academic year. The student will work on the A11y in Sci project, conducting research and creating professional development for teachers. As part of Shaheen’s Lab, the student can pursue an Ed.D in either special education or teaching and learning at Illinois State University. The opening begins fall of 2026 and concludes spring of 2029. This 3-year graduate research assistantship includes full tuition remission and monthly stipends all year (12 months). Prospective students should email Dr. Shaheen before January 4, 2026 to discuss their research interests and potential projects.
