Belcourt Residence Grand Opening
947 East Hastings, Vancouver

Are you, or anyone you know, in search of affordable housing?

Lookout Society is pleased to announce our new mixed income affordable housing resource, Belcourt Residence, located at 947 East Hastings Street in the vibrant Vancouver community of Strathcona.

Belcourt Residence is part of a newly-built 400 unit affordable housing resource delivered through the City of Vancouver’s Housing Strategy.

70 of these mixed income housing units (centre tower), will be managed by Lookout and are comprised of studio, one and two bedroom units.
The 70 units are divided as follows:
  • 23 of the residential units in the building are occupied by Low-End of Market (LEM) Unit Occupants (80-90% of market rent);
  • 24 of the residential units in the building are occupied by Shelter Rate unit occupants paying no more than $375.00 per month; and
  • 23 of the residential units in the building are occupied by Housing Income Limits (HILs) unit occupants where rent is geared to income.

This is not supportive housing, but rather a family friendly, mixed housing community .

Surrey Modular Accommodation Opens

Starting June 19, 2018 approximately 160 individuals experiencing homelessness along 135A Street in Surrey were offered housing, as well as health and social supports. The 160 units of temporary housing will include secure, individual rooms, with private bathrooms.

Residents will have access to meal programs, counselling and medical offices, 24/7 staffing, and life and employment skills programming. Lookout Housing and Health Society will operate all three buildings.

Fraser Health and Lookout Society will also operate an intensive case management team at the temporary housing, to assist those facing significant challenges with health, mental health, substance use, poverty, education and housing by connecting them to support services and treatment.

Bailey Mumford, Lookout's housing manager in Surrey, said the overall response from clients has been positive:

“We were expecting to
have a lot of people not
excited about this move, but
we’ve been really surprised.”

- Bailey Mumford,
Lookout's Surrey Modular Housing Manager
All three building were named after dedicated and
compassionate homeless champions in Surrey:
Steve Cobon Building:

Steve worked with Lookout Surrey's Front Room Resource Center from 1997-2017. Steve was innovative in relationship building and creating a great rapport with Lookout guests who are forever grateful for his hard work and dedication to making our community stronger.

Steve was at the naming ceremony with friends and family.
Nickerson Place:

Named after Doug Nickerson, a local homeless champion, Doug supported Lookout's guests on 135A Street in Surrey for decades!
During the 2016 opioid epidemic, he saved hundreds of lives and was honored with the Heart of the City award for this heroic work.

Sadly, this extraordinary human being lost his life to pancreatic cancer on October 28, 2017.
Nancy Gerard Building:

Nancy worked with Lookout Surrey from 1997-2014. For serving the community's vulnerable people in the Front Room Resource Centre, Lookout guests are forever grateful for the humour, relationships and rapport Nancy created.

Nancy was able to accept the honor in person at the BBQ celebration in Surrey.
Victoria Safe Consumption Opens

The Harbour Supervised Consumption Services is a multi-agency, interdisciplinary, voluntary service which provides harm reduction supplies, education, supervised consumption, and linkages to community and mental health/substance abuse treatment resources.

Judy Darcy, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions was on hand to support The Pandora Supervised Consumption Centre which officially opens on June 18, 2018. Island Health is partnering with Lookout Housing and Health Society whose harm reduction staff will provide supervision and education to ensure safer drug consumption, deliver crisis intervention and manage harm reduction supplies. SOLID Outreach Society’s team of peer harm reduction workers will provide supervision and education as well as support and advocacy. In addition to Island Health clinical staff, paramedics from BC Emergency Health Services will be on site, providing clinical expertise in support of the supervised consumption teams.
“While Lookout has a long, proud history of providing compassionate supportive housing and health services to vulnerable people in the lower mainland, the Pandora service is our first Island-based program,” said Shayne Williams, Executive Director of Lookout Housing and Health Society. “We are eager to bring our judgement-free, caring and committed team to support people in Greater Victoria.”

Also in this year's report also includes information on new services, Lookout statistics, social enterprises, and so much more!
