First eSports League is Underway
The first Orange County eSports League has gamers competing from 25 high schools. El Toro High, Laguna Hills High, and Mission Viejo High are all participants in the inaugural season. The Samueli Foundation has partnered with the OC Department of Education to start the new eSport league, which currently has 38 teams. The Samueli Foundation is underwriting the cost for the league's first year. The teams practice twice a week and play opponents once a week. The league is eight weeks of competition and will culminate with playoffs and a champion crowned in April. Of the 38 teams, the top 16 will compete in the quarterfinals and the championship match will be played on April 28 in Santa Ana's eSports arena. Now that the league has been introduced and embraced, the goal is to expand even more.

You may read more about eSports in this OC Register article published on February 8.
Disneyland Dreamers & Doers

We are proud of Sabrina Astle and Maya Williams of Laguna Hills High School for becoming Disneyland "Shining Stars!"

In the last edition of the SVUSD newsletter we reported that 5 of our SVUSD students' were recognized as part of the eighty six 2018 Disneyland Dreamers & Doers of Orange County. Of these 86 students, 35 were honored as "Shining Stars" and will receive $1,000 to give back to their schools.

We are proud to announce that both  Sabrina Astle and Maya Williams of Laguna Hills High School became "Shining Stars!"

Both girls participated as "Honorary Disney VoluntEARS" in the KaBOOM! playground build at Pearson Park in Anaheim on February 24.  Over 300 volunteers came together to build a kid-inspired, state-of-the-art playground. The new playground, which is the 10th Disney-sponsored KaBOOM! playground in Anaheim, will help more than 2,500 kids get the balanced and active play they need to thrive.
