As we enter into fall, watching the leaves burnish red and orange, wrapping ourselves in warm sweaters with hands around hot mugs, let us take time to remember the amazing women who we lost this past month and the brave steps they took for women and men alike.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg
1933-2020
During her illustrious career, 27 years of which were served on the supreme court, Ruth Bader Ginsberg fought tirelessly to advance women’s rights and gender equality.
As a co-founder of the Women’s Rights Project in 1972, Ginsburg brought to, and argued, several cases in court which addressed gender discrimination. Notably she argued that employers could not discriminate against employees based on gender or reproductive choices. She pushed to have pregnancy discrimination recognized as a form of sex discrimination also fought against forced sterilizations.
“The decision whether or not to bear a child is central to a woman's life, to her well-being and dignity...It is a decision she must make for herself."
"Women belong in all places where decisions are being made."
Ginsburg was not only a champion for women, but for the LGBTQ community as well. She was a key vote in granting same-sex marriages, in the 2015 case Obergefell v. Hodges, which allowed queer women and the rest of the LGBTQ community the right to same-sex marriages in all 50 states, ended in a 5-4 ruling.
"People who love each other and want tot live together should be able to enjoy the blessings and strife in the marriage relationship."
Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a powerful woman, who never gave up. She argued and fought for us and inspired us. Let us continue her legacy by tireless advocates for what is right, good and just.
"Fight for the things that your care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you."

A number one hit in 1972, Helen Reddy’s “I am Woman,” became a feminist anthem for the growing Women's Movement.
While already active in women's rights in her native Australia, Reddy could not find a song that expressed her convictions.
“I realized the song I was looking for didn’t exist, and I was going to have to write it myself.”
What followed was a song that became the soundtrack for empowering women and a movement.
Revisit "I am Woman" as you get ready to VOTE this November and check out the trailer for Helen Reddy’s biopic movie due to be released Sept 2020.

This year, perhaps more than ever, it is important to get your flu shot, because you can get the flu and COVID at the same time!
Over the past 6 months, over 200,000 people in the United States have lost their lives to COVID. Added to that, the CDC estimates that from October 2019-April 2020 there will be 24,000-62,000 flu deaths.
Despite these numbers, many people have misconceptions about the flu vaccine and do not get it yearly. Let's put on our masks though and face our fears and go get that flu shot, to give our healthcare workers and loved ones support this fall and winter!

The ESRN is seeking to understand all experiences including your own and potentially the experiences of those that you may care for (e.g., a family member with a disability). If you wish, you will have the opportunity to enter into a drawing to win one of six $25 gift cards for your participation. Please click the link below to participate. Thank you and feel free to share this opportunity!
