Community Innovator

What's the greatest lesson you've learned from the military community you serve, and how has it helped you be a better leader?

“The greatest and most primary is that of creating a family. It is more than being business partners or helping where there is a need. ... The military are trained to work and perform as a a team. In deployments and in combat, your life depends on the guy next to you. This team approach quickly eliminates that 'I' mentality -- you are all a part of the whole.”
Cyndy Jones
Founder, Heroes in Transition

In honor of Veterans Day, we'd like to shine a spotlight on the honorable work of Cyndy Jones and Heroes in Transition (HIT). Cyndy founded the nonprofit in 2009 in memory of her son, Capt. Eric A. Jones, a Marine pilot who lost his life while serving in Afghanistan. Since then, HIT has provided both financial and transitional assistance through a variety of programs to countless former and active military members and their families.

"When HIT began, it was to provide assistance at home," Cyndy explains. "The Board of Directors quickly researched areas of assistance that were not readily available either on the national level, state level or by local agencies. We quickly found our niche and it has grown tremendously." Among HIT's programs are their Couples Retreat, women's REBOOT program, and Canine Co-Pilot.

And in the true spirit of the Marine Corps mantra -- Improvise, Adapt and Overcome -- the organization is persevering through the COVID-19 pandemic, hosting a myriad of virtual and in-person gatherings -- including their first Veterans' Equine Weekend. Every program and event works to strengthen the well-being of military members and their loved ones and foster a strong sense of community -- or, as Cyndy puts it, "family."
