To the Boston College Community:

This past week, the extreme police brutality surrounding the killing of George Floyd and its aftermath is yet another example of the profound racial injustice and violence that has unfortunately been witnessed many times before. The Boston College Women's and Gender Studies program steadfastly affirms our commitment to ending systematic racism in all its forms.

As the University community returns to campus, it is imperative that we continue to engage with our students and faculty in reflective intersectional scholarship and promote actions that support our commitment to a learning environment that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. In Killing Rage, Ending Racism , feminist scholar bell hooks explains:

“There will be no feminist revolution without an end to racism and white supremacy. When all women and men engaged in the feminist struggle understand the interlocking nature of systems of domination, of white supremacist capitalist patriarchy, the feminist movement will regain its revolutionary progressive momentum.”

During these times, we hope that you are caring for yourselves and your communities in what feels most appropriate and restorative. Boston College Counseling Services remain open during the summer if you want to access these services. Additionally, we hope that you are able to engage in reflective action steps that help us all to work towards achieving racial justice. At the bottom of this email is a list of resources available for reading, reflection, and other action steps to get involved. While we are not currently together physically as a community, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at gender@bc.edu.

Sincerely,

The Boston College Women's and Gender Studies Program
