2025 Gila Monster Gran Fondo

Gear up for the 2025 Gila Monster Gran Fondo, a thrilling cycling event that challenges riders of all levels to conquer the scenic and mountainous terrain of New Mexico’s Trail of the Mountain Spirits Scenic Byway. Presented by Gila Hike & Bike, this event is named after record-setting endurance cyclist Lael Wilcox, who returns as the headliner for this unforgettable ride.

Start Time: 9:00 AM (Gran Fondo & Medio Fondo), 10:00 AM (Nano Fondo)

Location: Starting at Gila Hike & Bike, 103 E. College Ave., Silver City, NM


Course Options:

Gran Fondo (80 miles): 9,336 feet of climbing, reaching the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument Visitor Center.

Medio Fondo (60 miles): 6,810 feet of climbing, turning around at the Clinton P. Anderson Overlook.

Nano Fondo (30 miles): 2,747 feet of climbing, with a turnaround at Wild Horse Mesa.


Each route offers rest stops with water, energy-packed snacks, and support services, ensuring a safe and enjoyable ride. A sag wagon will also follow each course for additional assistance.


Post-Ride Celebration:

Finish your ride at the historic Buckhorn Saloon & Opera House in Pinos Altos, where you’ll enjoy free beer, food, live music, and camaraderie with fellow cyclists. Cap off the day with a special film screening featuring Lael Wilcox’s global cycling adventures at the Silco Theater.

This one-of-a-kind pack burro race kicks off on historic Broadway Avenue, where runners and their burro partners charge through the lively downtown before tackling the rugged trails of Boston Hill Open Space. Once a bustling mining hub, Boston Hill now offers a stunning backdrop of winding singletrack, sweeping views, and remnants of its mining past—making it the perfect setting for this heritage-rich sport.


With 6-mile and 3-mile course options, participants will face steep climbs, thrilling descents, and the unpredictable teamwork of running alongside their burros. The energy of Silver City comes alive as crowds cheer from Broadway and trailheads, capturing the small-town pride and adventurous spirit that define this community.


Held during Western New Mexico University’s Homecoming Weekend, the Silver Lode Scramble is more than a race—it’s a celebration of culture, tradition, and endurance.
