A week in the life of APP Class 43

The new year meant new opportunities for APP Class 43 participants! After orientation in early January, Class 43 started just before the end of the month. The class has now completed their first three weeks of the ten week program and is settling in to the APP routine. While no two weeks are exactly the same,

we want to give you a look at a week in APP Class 43!

Monday is typically spent working through the Multi-Craft Core Curriculum (a.k.a MC3, an industry-recognized union preparation course), earning OSHA-10 or CPR certifications, or participating in employment development sessions.

Tuesday involves physical fitness, which prepares participants for the physical rigors of union construction while providing an outlet for stress and trauma reduction. This week, the class went on a local hike and returned to Flintridge for some post-hike MC3 learning.

Wednesdays are reserved for construction math and financial literacy sessions with our team of volunteers as well as Life Skills with 2nd Call. These sessions enable participants to develop skills that they will use throughout their careers.

The class often spends Thursdays visiting local construction trade unions and construction sites. This Thursday they also spent some time planning and working on their hands-on projects (Little Free Libraries!).

New Youth of Promise Video

We are so excited to share our new Youth of Promise video! We hope this video will give you an inside look at the program and enable you to learn about YOP from staff and leaders, as well as directly from our participants themselves. Happy watching!

Take me to the video!

Black History Month

As we move through Black History Month, we take time to celebrate, honor, and reflect. We know that our justice system disproportionately impacts Black youth and adults, and we are committed to working every day towards a more just and equitable future. We want to highlight a few local ways to honor Black History Month:

Janet's New Role

We’re thrilled to re-introduce you to Janet in her new role as our first Manager of Behavioral Health! Janet has worked at Flintridge since 2016, and earned her Master of Social Work in 2020. After six years as case manager with the YOP program, Janet begins her new role as the Manager of Behavioral Health. Janet provides direct supervised therapeutic services to youth and adults while developing our continuum of behavioral health and supportive services. She's committed to dismantling oppressive and punitive systems and working to create authentic healing-centered spaces though empowerment, mindfulness, and connection.

Welcome, Derek

Derek joined the Flintridge team as a Reintegration Case Manager at the beginning of the new year. Derek was born and raised here in the great city of Pasadena, where he graduated from John Muir High School. After working in retail and as an independent contractor for years, he decided to spread his wings and join the Flintridge team. Now, he’s able to give back to the very community that raised him. He’s full throttle on breaking down negative barriers and spreading positivity. We're thrilled to have you on the team, Derek!
