Fransisco Jiménez at Orion Alternative School

A WEEK TO REMEMBER FOR YOUNG READERS

Last week was an unforgettable one for young readers in our community, as two celebrated authors visited Redwood City to share their powerful stories and inspire the next generation.

The week began with author Laura Resau, with a special event at the Downtown Library centered around her book Stand as Tall as the Trees—the true story of an Amazonian community’s courageous fight to protect the rainforest. The following day, she captivated an audience of more than 200 students at Hoover School, encouraging them to see how anyone, no matter their age, can make a difference for the planet. Her visit was part of the Roots of Change: Creating A Sustainable Future Together program series.

Later in the week, we welcomed Francisco Jiménez (pictured at top), who spoke to over 500 students at Taft School and Orion Alternative School about his moving immigrant journey, as told in his acclaimed book The Circuit. Thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Redwood City Public Library, every student in attendance received a personal copy of the book to take home! Jiménez, a recipient of the John Steinbeck Award and a Pura Belpré Honor, is also the author of Breaking Through and La Mariposa.

The library is proud to bring books, authors and meaningful experiences to our community—especially those that help young readers make a difference and see themselves in the stories they read.

DRAG STORY HOUR

Join us for Drag Story Hour on Saturday April 26 at 11am at the Downtown Library! Drag Story Hour helps children develop empathy, learn about gender diversity and difference and tap into their own creativity. This is a family-friendly story time.

This program is part of the Lost Childhoods Exhibit, a look into the foster care and juvenile justice systems through the eyes of the youth who lived it, at the Downtown Library. The exhibit is available for public viewing during the months of April 2025 and May 2025. This exhibit and program series is offered in partnership with Foster Youth Museum and CASA of San Mateo County.

NEWS FROM THE FOUNDATION

Family Game Night at the Library hosted by the Redwood City Library Foundation on April 1, to celebrate National Library Giving Day, was a huge success! The inaugural event sold out with room capacity at 100. Thirty-three families participated in bingo games, library trivia and solved a library-themed mystery puzzle, with all proceeds benefiting the library. This family-centered spring event was the first Foundation event for 40% of our participating families. This helps us build a base of future library donors and continue to raise visibility of the impact our library has in the community, especially for the Summer Learning Challenge and the Bridging the Digital Divide initiative. Game Night was truly intergenerational with a wide variety of ages attending. We plan to repeat the event at the Redwood Shores Branch Library on November 12 – save the date! We are especially grateful to our event hosts, Bradley Friedman and Dani Gasparini for leading the game night and sharing their wit and enthusiasm for bingo, trivia and mystery games! Feedback received from our exit survey revealed almost 100% satisfaction, with a common theme being fun for all ages and affordable! Join us for our next Family Game Night on November 12. Ticketing is already open: https://paybee.io/in-person-event/rclf/3
