Last week was an unforgettable one for young readers in our community, as two celebrated authors visited Redwood City to share their powerful stories and inspire the next generation.
The week began with author Laura Resau, with a special event at the Downtown Library centered around her book Stand as Tall as the Trees—the true story of an Amazonian community’s courageous fight to protect the rainforest. The following day, she captivated an audience of more than 200 students at Hoover School, encouraging them to see how anyone, no matter their age, can make a difference for the planet. Her visit was part of the Roots of Change: Creating A Sustainable Future Together program series.
Later in the week, we welcomed Francisco Jiménez (pictured at top), who spoke to over 500 students at Taft School and Orion Alternative School about his moving immigrant journey, as told in his acclaimed book The Circuit. Thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Redwood City Public Library, every student in attendance received a personal copy of the book to take home! Jiménez, a recipient of the John Steinbeck Award and a Pura Belpré Honor, is also the author of Breaking Through and La Mariposa.
The library is proud to bring books, authors and meaningful experiences to our community—especially those that help young readers make a difference and see themselves in the stories they read.
