Dear Kansas Abortion Fund partner,
We’re thrilled that, yesterday,
the United States Supreme Court struck down a Louisiana law restricting abortion rights
. This law would have left Louisiana with just one abortion provider to serve the entire state. It is an identical law SCOTUS already ruled unconstitutional only four years ago, which concluded that forcing abortion providers to become mini-hospitals is medically unnecessary and intended to shut clinics down. We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to Louisiana’s Hope Clinic, and critical allies like the New Orleans Abortion Fund, for shouldering
years
of labor for all of us fighting for abortion access.
As a supporter of the Kansas Abortion Fund, no one knows better than you that legal doesn’t always mean accessible when it comes to abortion. Abortion funds support people in overcoming obstacles when trying to access the care they need.
Roe
has never been enough to guarantee true abortion access. Because of racist and discriminatory policies, barriers to abortion access disproportionately impacts people of color, low income, undocumented, transgender and gender nonconforming persons as well as people who are routinely denied access to healthcare. Supreme Court decisions have a real and tangible impact on abortion access, but we can’t count on the Supreme Court, an institution not built for us, to defend our rights.
Abortion funds are experts on navigating the landscape of shrinking abortion access, KAF and our partners have decades of collective wisdom and experience helping people navigate the layers of barriers just to access an abortion, which is basic health care. If the Court’s decision shows anything, it’s that now is the time for a deep investment in the wisdom and power of abortion funds. We need a movement of engaged and informed people working diligently for abortion access now more than ever.
