August 25, 2024 | Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

A word from John+

There are so many activities that go on here and groups that meet here at Christ Church week in and week out. But, since our founding in 1794, our mission has been to help as many people as possible find deeper connection to God. The altar is our foundation. We want other people to join us around God’s table not for growths sake but because we believe that living out our mission can transform people’s lives for the better. Our mission comes with an invitation: all people are welcome around God’s table. Every Sunday we do something countercultural when we gather together around this table as Republicans, Democrats, and Independents; gay, straight, and trans; rich, poor, middle class; Black, White, Asian, and Hispanic. None of us are worthy and, yet, every single one of us bares God’s imprint upon our soul. We can do a lot of things with our time on Sunday mornings - go to brunch, play soccer, read the New York Times - but where else will we find this type of community and connection, not only dedicated to a common set of values, but committed to seeing each other and supporting each other as we navigate the curveballs and sufferings that life inevitably throws at us?

God’s table is needed in today’s world more than ever.

I recently read a story about a Buddhist monk leading a retreat. The monk invited each of his students to clench a fist with one of their hands. Try that if you like. Clench your fist. And, then, he asked his students to take their other hand and try to force their fist open. Try that. Your fist only clenches tighter, as if by its own will. Now try this: make your fist again and, this time, with your other hand, cradle your fist. You can feel your fist release and soften.

A sea of clenched fists is a metaphor for our world right now. One of the most powerful ways we can be present to our world’s pain is with tenderness (Krista Tippett, "Softening the Clenched Fist"). The altar is a place where we can come to soften our clenched fists. Communion is a sacrament that can overcome even the deepest estrangements between us.

Research shows that rituals can infuse meaning into our daily activities, help us form healthy habits, and improve our relationships. If there is truth in the axiom that we are what we eat, then may we renew our commitment to this ancient and holy ritual: gathering around God’s table, sharing communion, unclenching our fists, fostering tenderness towards one another, and asking God to transform us into vessels of healing for a world that is in desperate need.

Kiddos have too many wiggles?

We love having a church full of people of all ages. The sounds of children’s laughter, the pitter-patter of feet up the aisle, and, yes, even the occasional mid-service meltdown are signs of a healthy church!

Occasionally the noises coming from our youngest members can become distracting to other worshipers (and to their own parents). In those moments, we encourage parents to do what they need to! Here are a few suggestions:

  • Stretch your legs in the Narthex (church entryway.)
  • Take your little one to the Library, (just off the right side door of the church) where a speaker plays the service, so you won’t miss a word!
  • The nursery is available every Sunday from 8:45am - 12:15pm for babies through toddlers age 3. Professional caregivers, toys, and books make this a great option for young children so that parents can be fully present in the service!
  • We encourage those with youngsters to sit towards the front of the sanctuary, closer to “the action.” There is a lot to observe, and engaging with what's going on at the altar is a great way to start teaching children about our faith from a young age.

Expanded Small Group Programming!

Beginning this fall, a number of small groups will meet monthly through the program year. Some will be formed around certain affinities or commonalities and others will be more general. The goal of all of these groups is for people to get to know one another better and enjoy time engaging in conversation about their lives and spirituality. Please complete this form by September 15 if you're interested in joining one of our groups!

Become a Member!

Our next New Member Welcome will take place on Kick-Off Sunday (September 8). If you are ready to make your relationship with us official, simply fill out this form (and then send us a brief bio!) You can read more about how we view membership here (spoiler: if you consider yourself a member, we do too, but making it official in our books helps more accurately represent our community to the larger Episcopal Church. Either way, join us on September 8 to feel our warm welcome!

Attention Singers!

The Christ Church Choir begins its singing season right after Labor Day, and all are welcome! It's a great way to share your musical gifts with your church. We rehearse Wednesdays from 7:30 - 9:15 p.m., warm-up Sundays at 10:15 a.m., and sing at the 11:00 a.m. service. In addition to learning wonderful sacred music, there is an unmistakable element of fellowship with monthly post-rehearsal celebrations of birthdays and other life events. Please consider joining us. Let us know you're coming or get more information by emailing Music Director Richard Thibadeau.

Keep that water coming through Labor Day!

Shirley's Place continues to fly through their water and drink supplies. Just a few weeks left to add a flat of water to your grocery list so we can keep our neighbors safe and hydrated. Thank you!

Sermon Spotlight

"Where else will we find this time of community and connection?" Hear Rev. John remind us of our central mission - to help as many people as possible find a deeper relationship with God - and how setting aside our differences every Sunday to focus on all we have in common can help us do just that.

Past sermons are always on our website.
