With the Holidays approaching and the calendar year end, it is hard to believe that we have been in this pandemic since March. I want to thank the Board of Port Commissioners for their dedication, leadership, encouragement, and trust in Port staff. The Port continues to tackle each challenge while we are all adapting, changing the way we do business, the way we serve our community, and the way we interact with each other.  I want to also thank the City of Redwood City for their leadership, collaborative spirit, and partnership with the Port. Port staff regularly interacts with many City departments and staff. With the pandemic this year those relationships have grown stronger as we have embraced how we can serve the public, protect our resources, and continue to offer new ways for our residents to enjoy the waterfront.  

This year has also proven challenging for the Port as an economic engine for the region. As we struggled earlier this year to ascertain the impacts of what the pandemic might do to our industry, our Port tenants have remained resilient and cautious in approaching changes to the market.  I am proud to be a part of the international system that keeps goods moving. Our Port has continued to deliver cargo from around the world while also exporting to international markets, keeping a portion of our local economy afloat. 

As the Port continues to be diligent and safe in our work efforts, our port operations, and our community’s waterfront, we are looking ahead to whatever comes next with the knowledge that we can and will keep delivering.

Spotlight on Tonnage & Vessel Reports

While the Port witnessed some impacts to our cargo tonnages from the international pandemic, we still continued to conduct international trade every day. Did you know that each month the Port of Redwood City receives ships from around the world? Each month ships visiting our Port bring cargo from, or take cargo to countries like Australia, China, Canada, Mexico and Bangladesh. You can see the names of the ships, the type of cargo they carry, and their destination or origination of cargo on our website. We publish a monthly Vessel & Tonnage Report that even includes how much cargo they are carrying in metric tons. Our Waterfront and Marina is Open!

This Holiday Season we are trying something new along the waterfront, holiday motor movies! The Port in collaboration with the City of Redwood City’s Parks & Recreation Department is hosting movies for families to enjoy in their cars. For more information about the movie schedule and shows click here. 

Did you know the Port operates the 190-berth Redwood City Marina? United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Celebrates Sixty Years of Service
When Flotilla 04-06 was formed, Dwight Eisenhower was President of the United States and gasoline was 25 cents per gallon. Many things have changed since that time, but the volunteers of Flotilla 04-06 have remained on duty through it all, providing valuable services to the public and to the United States Coast Guard. Located at the Port of Redwood City, the only deepwater port in the South San Francisco Bay, the flotilla was recognized by the National Commodore for this milestone achievement of service earlier this year.

Flotilla 04-06 is headquartered in the old harbormaster’s tower, above the Redwood City Marina. From that location, the flotilla members hold their monthly meeting, conduct crew training, coordinate boater safety training and vessel safety inspections, launch patrol missions into San Francisco Bay, and maintain a radio communications facility. Recreational boating safety is one of the prime missions of the Auxiliary and this requires outreach to the public in many different venues, on land and afloat. Flotilla 04-06 also supports U.S. Coast Guard activities in Sector San Francisco, which includes patrols to check navigational aids in the bay and participating in special events such as Fleet Week.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is a volunteer service and Flotilla 04-06 welcomes all who might be interested in this unique opportunity to serve the community and take advantage of the education and training provided by the Auxiliary. Links to the flotilla website and membership eligibility are provided below. Flotilla 04-06 meets on the second Tuesday of the month at their location at the Port of Redwood City. Currently, in person meetings are suspended due to Covid 19 safety protocols but please contact them for more information.
