When debt seems like a hole you will never get out of, you get a phone call or email or find a website promising to settle your liabilities for pennies or the dollars.
PROCEED WITH CARE!!!
There are reputable companies that can help you, but scammers on the other hand "guarantee" to get you out of debt if you pay them before they do anything for you. Some take your money and disappear, while others will string you along only sinking you further in debt. Legitimate debut relief firms do charge for their services but only when they get results. Watch for the warning signs:
- A debt relief company that asks for fees up front before it settles any debts
- A debt relief company that guarantees it can eliminate your debt or reduce it by a particular amount in a set period of time
- A debt relief company that advises you to cease all communications with your creditors
- A debt relief company that won't send you information about its services unless you provide financial information such as credit card account numbers or balances
- A debt relief company that claims to be part of a new government program
Always be skeptical and research the service. Search on-line for reviews or histories. Contact the Better Business Bureau or Consumer Protection Bureau to see if the debt relief company is the subject of complaints.
