'Come Back to Jamaica...

What's Old is What's New..."

Click Image to hear classic "Come Back to Jamaica" campaign.

Just as the iconic "Come Back To Jamaica" campaign beckoned the world back home to Jamaica in an effort to increase waning tourism, in the same spirit "Season of Black Art" invites the San Francisco Bay Area residents and visitors from around the world to the equivalent of a homecoming celebration monthly now through February 24, 2024 at The African American Art & Culture Complex.

As Melorra Green and Melonie Green, affectionately known as The Twins, Co-Executive Directors of The African American Art & Culture Complex, (AAACC) talked to New Conservatory Theater Center (NCTC) volunteers and staff about The Transformation of AAACC, Shakespeare's poetry, "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet came to mind.

"Come Back to AAACC...

We're Waiting For You"

Transformed Triple A-C-C Creates Transformations..."Season of Black Art"

Marks A "Homecoming & Housewarming Celebration..."

Even the building's various names, as artistically written or painted on the Wall, carry the realization of the past, the present and future crystallized in one moniker. I had the honor of tagging along on an eye opening NCTC tour.

"Season of Black Art" ,directed through February 2024 by Rodney Earl Jackson Jr., co-founder of San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Company (SFBATCO) and creator of The New Roots Theatre Festival, came alive for me.

Melorra and Melonie spoke about "Fillmore Forever" and the need to talk about the bond between the Black community and Japanese community as a result of the unjust Japanese Internment during World War II. "The Twins," as they are affectionately known, told the NCTC tour members that there is a need to tighten the connection. The AAACC, once a brewery, can help bring people together. There is "There There" at the arts complex and "There is so much more than meets the eye."

"Drink to me only with thine eyes and I'll pledge with mine"... that song comes to mind as I consider the tour with New Conservatory Theatre Center...And if ""Drink to Me Only..." was a lifetime inspiration to Johnny Cash, one of my all time favorite singer/storytellers in the world, hey, count me inspired.

Inspiration is what I believe you'll find... So much in the past as you consider the famous and community folks that traced through AAACC... So much for the present and future as you see the podcast rooms, the media room that Will Hammond and team has developed to stream from every floor and even outdoors... the arts careers that were launched, that are being launched and that will be launched. The vision is swirling with endless possibilities.

Deep among the stories of AAACC, just a casual conversation with Patrick Simms, the founder of PEOPLE IN PLAZAS demonstrated the far reaching tentacles of AAACC by virtue of the fact that Patrick, a sound engineer among other talented folks, has helped redesign sound for the complex. Simms is responsible for many of the musicians we see and hear on the streets of San Francisco. The AAACC reach is far and wide.

And the beat goes on, with folks like Judith Cohen, Director of Handful Players, who is among many mentors that have flowed through the AAACC over the years, cultivating the lives of youth, representing the past, the present and the future with their work. Mayor London Breed's comments after one of Cohen's Handful Players productions at AAACC, underscores the power of place and the impact of investing in young lives.

Enough Words...A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORLDS... See The African American Art & Culture Complex Changes There's something happening! COME SEE..The "Ch Ch Changes..."
