Inaugural AAC Subspecialty Day a Resounding Success
Many thanks to all who moderated, participated and attended the first AAC organized Subspecialty Day!
Two multi-society ICLs were highlighted in the general meeting section involving CSES/AAC on rotator cuff repair and AAC/COFAS on cartilage issues in the knee and ankle. Many thanks to our moderators and speakers for the traditional Tips and Tricks session and 'How do I . . .' Symposium. New this year were the Poster Tours, where four highly-ranked hot-topic posters had the chance to make a short presentation on their research while members could grab a coffee and a snack. Our AAC guest speaker was Dr. Bob McCormack from BC who gave us amazing insight into his experience on the world stage at the Sochi Olympics. The research papers are getting better every year, a great testimony to the dedication of our Canadian researchers. Clinical and Basic Science Best Paper Awards were another new addition for 2018 and are listed below.  The highlight of the day, however was the Great Debate!
The Eye of the Tiger indeed. What mus t the other subspecialties have thought when ‘Survivor ♪’ blasted out of the AAC meeting room? Rising up to the challenge of their rival were John Grant and Cat Hui who debated hamstring vs. patellar tendon for ACL reconstruction.
Debate number two featured Matt Lewington and Steve French who debated steroid vs. hyaluronic acid for knee OA. The debates were scientific, funny, and they even got in some shots below the belt. You just had to be there. The anonymous digital voting declared John Grant and Steve French the winners, but Laurie declared them all winners! The only question left is . . . who can outdo these debaters next year??
The Business Meeting summarized our first year which included some big wins. The evolution of our membership to over 100 members, publication of our Position Statement concerning Arthroscopy of the Knee Joint in OJSM, and reporting on numerous new initiatives that are underway. We encourage members to get involved. Send us an email to be included in the upcoming mid-winter and annual meetings as well as our future position statements.
