Project Connect Season 4

Project Connect Season 4 2016
Project Connect, a night of Fashion, Fun and Charity for the New Mexico Autism Society, held its 4th event Saturday, September 10th at Effex Nightclub in downtown Albuquerque.
Since its inception, Albuquerque Apparel Center has awarded one winner a designer or vendor package at New Mexico Fashion Week.  This year, AAC founder and award winning designer Melissa Lea participated as a designer. The New Mexico Autism Society provided each designer with 1 yard of Autism Awareness Puzzle Piece fabric. From this and added chosen fabric, designers created a vintage (1940's-1950's) or new in 2016 Roaring 20's (1920's) inspired garment. Garment Inspirations categories included Red Carpet Marilyn Monroe, Riveting Rosie, Mad for Mrs. Betty Draper, Teasingly Dita Von Teese, Bettie Page on the Beach, We Love Lucy, Elegant Audrey Hepburn, and Smokin' Joan C rawford, Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, Colleen Moore, Greta Garbo, Louise Brooks, Dorothy Sebastian and Joan Crawford, and Doris Hill.
Each designer's creation was showcased and judged based on creativity, style and personality.  Melissa Lea's design choice was a high-waist pant and top inspired by Coco Chanel's 1920s designs and propelled into the spotlight by beauties Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford and Coco herself.  "I absolutely love the styles of the early 1900's - 1940's.  In the past, I've designed elaborate dresses most people relate to the Titanic era. Designing the high-waist pant for Project Connect was a fun change of pace for me and it was a big hit at the event, something different", Melissa commented. Her design won 3rd place. A live auction concluded the show where each design was auctioned off to benefit the New Mexico Autism Society.
