AACA Welcomes the Class of 1998
By Steven Rossi, AACA National VP Public Relations & Event Planning, sldmrossi@aol.com
Images provided by the Chris & Kathleen Koch AACA Library & Research Center
|
As you know, AACA considers any vehicle 25-years-old-or-older an antique. This year, AACA recognizes the Class of 1998 that’s crossed that 25-year-old threshold. Here a sampling of some recognized examples that now enjoy antique automobile status and are welcome on AACA show fields across America and around the world:
|
1998 New Volkswagen Beetle
In a nod to its iconic heritage, Volkswagen rolled back the clock and treated automotive enthusiasts to a reimagined 1998 VW Bug in anticipation of the soon to arrive new millennium. The company said that, “A car like this only comes around twice in a lifetime.” But they weren’t thinking small…this time…with this all-new edition. Built off the Golf, the last one would leave the line in 2019.
1998 Mercedes-Benz ML 320
Remembered as the first modern luxury sport utility vehicle, the Mercedes M-Class pioneered the idea of combining off-road prowess with utmost creature comfort, along with refined performance, on-road handling precision and steadfast safety sentiment. It was assembled in a purpose-built plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
1998 Ford Crown Victoria
In 1998, Ford took the opportunity to redesign its mainstream, full-sized four-door sedan for the masses with a more elegant and formal execution. Versions specified for law enforcement were now designated Police Interceptors. Over what would become a fourteen-year lifespan, just under 1 million were manufactured.
1998 Toyota Sienna
The then-ever popular minivan segment enjoyed the arrival of a new entry from Toyota. Replacing the rear-wheel drive Previa, the front-drive “Camry of minivans” was designed specifically for the North American market. Now in its fourth generation, the award-winning Toyota Sienna remains with us to this day.
|
1998 Chevrolet Camaro/Pontiac Firebird LS 1
The bowtie brand took its new-for-1997 LS (Luxury Sport) 1 Corvette engine and dropped it into the Camaro for 1998. It was considered “balanced and brutally fast” with a 0-60 mph elapsed time of 5.2 seconds. A sister Pontiac Firebird F-body was also offered.
1998 BMW Z3 M
Likewise in the performance domain, BMW breathed on its Z3 sportscar with factory “M” treatment. Engine and chassis upgrades were calibrated specifically for enthusiasts, and the Z3 M is now considered BMW’s last analog sports car.
1998 Mercedes-Benz SLK
In 1998, the Stuttgart automaker may have been busy with the groundbreaking ML sport utility, but that didn’t stop it from also introducing the SLK sports car. A bit tamer than the BMW Z3 M, it instead distinguished itself by taking a page out of automotive history and reintroducing the retractable hardtop.
1998 Mercedes-Benz CLK
If that weren’t enough, Mercedes also launched the CLK sport coupe in 1998 in the U.S. As a company that previously produced primarily four-door sedans, it was intended to be a new expression of rolling sculpture. And succeeded.
|
1998 Lincoln Navigator
Lincoln entered the full-size, luxury SUV fray with the Navigator, which was built off the Ford Expedition. It was advertised under the headline…“Damn the tuxedos, full speed ahead.” Over-the-road serenity has since been its objective.
1998 Dodge Ram Quad Cab
Dodge joined the door wars with the lure of more…actually, four…in its full-size pickup truck. The Quad Cab was marketed through an ambitious campaign that promoted, “More power. More torque. More towing. More payload. More room.”
In conclusion, if you are the proud owner of any of these vehicles or one of the many other “new” antiques, please consider registering for a National AACA show this year and start showing off your 1998 treasures.

National Volunteer Month and the Library:
2022 in Review
By Matthew Hocker, AACA Library Catalog Librarian & Volunteer Coordinator, mhocker@aaca.org
|
April is a month associated with new beginnings; spring is in full swing with leaves returning to trees, flowers are blooming, and woodland creatures emerge from hibernation. With an emphasis on growth and progress, it seems only appropriate that April is also designated National Volunteer Month. While you may already be familiar with the library’s dedicated staff, we wouldn’t be half of what we are without our volunteers who generously contribute their time in assisting us with events, countless projects, and sharing their invaluable areas of expertise. This month’s column is dedicated to them, their accomplishments in 2022, and their contributions beyond.
In 2022, volunteers contributed more than 1,887 hours of their time to the library, smashing 2021’s record by over 700 hours. Placing this figure in perspective within the context of the 8-hour workday, our volunteers put in the equivalent of over 47 workdays. If you were to factor in weekends, that would amount to over 2 months of one person working fulltime.
Two months may not sound like much, but with this time spread throughout the calendar year volunteers are an integral part of our day-to-day operations. They regularly assist with processing donations, organizing & pricing duplicate material, filing newly added sales literature, and tackling some of the toughest research questions. Because our crew of regular volunteers is so diverse, we can also always count on them to share their areas of expertise with us when we need it most.
Not everyone lives close enough to volunteer every week, but we are fortunate enough to have a strong network of supporters who come to our aid when their travels bring them to Hershey. They make their biggest mark in October, helping the library remain open for research and staffing booths for the Library Yard Sale. Our 2022 event raised $23,272, more than doubling our previous record.
For Fall Hershey 2022, we leaned on our volunteers like never before in the wake of the tragic passing of former Library Director Chris Ritter. Even folks who came to do research stepped up to help during our busiest moments. Beyond giving a helping hand, their presence went a long way in brightening an otherwise sad time. Seeing how everyone was working together to bring smiles to one another’s faces was a motivational force like no other because, deep down, we knew that Chris would be proud.
Of the 1,887 volunteer hours in 2022, it is worth noting that a dedicated crew of five people put in 1,575 hours of work. Together, they make up the backbone of our volunteer team, and they go above and beyond in helping with day-to-day activities. They are:
1. Bob Terpak: 602 hours
2. Dan Reed: 341 hours
3. Bruce Vaughn: 284.5 hours
4. Anonymous (He does not like the limelight, but he knows who he is!): 206 hours
5. Deb Colaniro: 152 hours
If you ever visit the library or see us at an event and meet one of our volunteers, be sure to thank them for all that they do to keep things running behind the scenes. Each and every one of them goes a long way in making the AACA Library a world-class automotive resource. To everyone who provided assistance in 2022 and to those making their mark in 2023, THANK YOU for all that you do!

Visiting Interesting Places
This is a member submitted story in response to the “Travel is Good for the Soul” article from last month’s Speedster.
|
I agree with you. I take a copy of Richard Osborne’s Tour Book for Antique Car Buffs for each state and have found many interesting museums using the book. It’s probably a little out of date by now, 2006, 4th edition, but that’s okay.
On the way to a church picnic, I discovered the Salty Dog Museum located at 4985 Cincinnati Brookville Rd., Shandon, OH 45063. The museum is a 501c3 not-for-profit and admission is a suggested $7 donation per person. It houses a collection of Ford Model As and some later models including race cars. There is also a collection of antique fire trucks, which are often used in local parades, especially the day of the Church festival. The building that houses the collection is spotless – you could practically eat off the floor if you wanted to. One of the owners joined us late in our tour and shared lots of stories.
My son and I really enjoyed our visit and would recommend the museum to anyone passing through that area.

WWII Memorial Dedication at Sebring International Raceway
This is a member submitted story.
|
|
The January 2023 issue of Speedster featured an article about the Sebring International Raceway (SIR) dedicating a portion of the track grounds as a WWII Memorial. Wayne Estes, President and General Manager of Sebring International Raceway, was looking for late 1930s and early 1940s cars for the dedication ceremony.
Established in 1950, Sebring International Raceway is North America’s oldest permanent road racing facility and is known as the birthplace of American endurance racing. The 3.74-mile track is on what was originally Hendricks Field. Hendricks Field is named in honor of 1st Lt. Laird Woodruff Hendricks, Jr. Hendricks was born in Ocala and grew up in Jacksonville. Lt. Hendricks graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1939. He was killed in a B-17C crash near RAF Polebrook, England, on July 28, 1941, three days after he arrived there to train Royal Air Force pilots.
|
|
On June 12, 1941, the U.S. Congress approved an area of 9,200 acres of woodland for a basic flying school. The City of Sebring purchased the land and leased it to the government at $1 per year for 99 years. At the end of 1941, it was revealed that the field would not be used for basic flight training. It would become the first Combat Crew Training School in the United States specializing in the training of B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator aircrews (and later, B-29 Superfortress aircrews). These crews went on to serve in Europe and Asia during the war. As the war wound down, the base was closed on December 31, 1945.
The original flagpole and many of its streets are still there today. The flagpole area was being re-dedicated as Hendricks Field Memorial Park during the 12 Hours of Sebring race week.
|
|
Upon reading the Speedster article I immediately sent Wayne an email informing him that I did not have a late ‘30s car but did have a pretty nice early ‘30s car if he’d be interested in a 1932 Chevrolet Confederate Coupe for the dedication ceremony. Wayne answered me right back and said that he had pictures of early ‘30s Fords and Chevys all over Hendricks Field during WWII; he would very much like to have my Chevy there and to bring my friends. As Sherry and I are still in the process of moving to Sebring, I didn’t have a lot of car friends in the area, but I had already hooked-up with the Lake Country Cruisers and was on their email list. I shot off an email to the Cruisers and got an immediate response from Scott Teeters that they had members with several appropriate vehicles.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, March 15, I drove “Lucwheel,” my ‘32 Chevy, to the speedway with my son-in-law, David, where we were greeted by Wayne Estes and escorted to the memorial site. At 4:00 p.m., we were positioned around the Hendricks Memorial Park flagpole with six other WWII era cars including a gorgeous unrestored, unmolested 1930 Chevy sedan belonging to WWII Veteran Navy Commander Frank Jones; Bob Neely's restored 1942 "Ford-built" Combat Jeep; another WWII era Combat Jeep also belonging to Bob Neely; and a beautifully restored 1939 Mercury convertible. We had a great time talking to each other and the spectators who had gathered for the dedication. Just before the ceremony began Dick and Marilyn Roddie arrived with WWII Veteran Ross Longo, a founding member of the Lake Country Cruisers, in their 1931 Cadillac V-12 Phaeton. The Sebring High School Band was on hand playing classic 1940s WWII era music.

The ceremony was opened with a pledge to the flag and the presentation of the colors by VFW Post 4300 Honor Guard. Guests of honor were WWII Veteran Ross Longo and 100-year-old WWII D-Day paratrooper pilot Chester Barber. SIR Senior Director of Marketing, John Story, greeted those present before introducing Wayne Estes who followed with a history of Hendricks Field and Sebring International Raceway. George Lutz, founder of “Honor and Remember” explained the purpose of his organization to honor each and every veteran who gave their life in service to their country. He then presented a “Honor and Remember” flag to very special guest, Gold-Star mom, Ines Ortiz, who gave a heartfelt speech honoring her son, U.S. Army Specialist David J. Brangman, who was killed in Iraq on February 13, 2005.
The entire event was very well organized and, to say the least, was one of the most memorable and honorable events I have ever been privileged to participate in in all my years in the old car hobby.

Membership Corner: What is Your AACA Elevator Speech?
By Phillip Cole, AACA National VP Publications &
|
I was watching a couple as they walked around my pre-war Buick. They were pointing and smiling as they went. When they got to the driver’s door, I was standing there and asked with a smile, “So, you like old cars?” *
“Yes, we do!” they smiled back, and she asked, “What is it?”
“It’s a 1940 Buick…” I said as I shook hands with both of them. “My name is Phillip. I’m a member of the club putting on this event.” Opening the driver’s door, I asked, “Want to look inside?” *
“Oh yes!” she said sliding into the driver’s seat. I reached into my pocket and handed him our region’s brochure and my director’s card as he peered over her shoulder. **
After answering a few simple questions about the car, I suggested, “Next Saturday we’re having a breakfast meeting, where you can learn about our club and its mission. Please be my guest…” ***
Notice how that conversation contains three simple parts:
* First, simple questions to introduce yourself and draw their interest. It’s called the “hook.”
Although I admit the real hook was that ‘40 Buick.
** Second, offer contact and mission information you can put into their hand.
*** Three, give them an opportunity to respond! That’s the beginning of the invitation.
|
The above conversation is an example of my “AACA Elevator Speech.” An Elevator Speech is a less than one minute conversation where “you introduce yourself, get across a few key points, and make an encouraging connection with someone.” (In other words, how long it would take you to have a brief conversation riding to the next floor in an elevator.) If we are making an effort to grow our membership, then each of us needs to work on our own version of an AACA Elevator Speech. Over the last several years, I have found myself in many conversations around growing our membership. Inevitably, someone says, “I don’t know what to say!”
After five decades of providing leadership to growing voluntary organizations, I can tell you the first step is to engage others. And a most effective tool in engaging others is word-of-mouth. If we truly want to spread our mission, then each of us needs to work up, practice and have at the ready our own AACA Elevator Speech. Opportunities to use it will pop up all the time – you’ll see!

Update on the AACA Oral History Project
|
Many thanks to all of the AACA members who decided to take part in the AACA Oral History Project over the past few months. Collecting all the stories and images to produce the recordings and the printed book was a giant undertaking and we are very thankful for our partners on this project, PCI.
In the end, more than 8,000 stories were collected and will become a permanent part of our new oral history center generously underwritten by John and Lynn Heimerl here at AACA National Headquarters. Not only will visitors be able to peruse a copy of the book to read your stories, better yet they will be able to actually listen to you telling your story via your recording. We think that’s pretty exciting! What is also exciting is that those of you visiting AACA’s building will be able to record your own story! Our Oral History Center is already well underway with equipment on the way and furniture already installed!
The total estimated duration for the Oral History Project to be completed is about 12 months. Since we began the project in August 2022, the books should be distributed in August 2023. We are sorry that you will have wait a few more months, but in the end, we think it will be worth it. Judging by the initial pages we have seen, we are sure of it!

The Great American Road Trip for Veterans
Interview with AACA Member Captain Scott Montefusco,
|
Growing up on Long Island, NY, Scott was always interested in American history and had a love for antique cars and trucks. Scott’s service to our nation started when he joined the Marines after college. He served as a Captain and after 13 years transitioned to the FBI, where he served another 24 years. In addition to his serving our country, Scott is passionate about giving back to his community, which is why he started The Great American Road Trip for Veterans organization.
A cross-country driving fundraiser from San Francisco to New York City, covering 52 cities in just 65 days, is in the works headed by former Marine Captain Scott Montefusco and his team. The ride starts from San Francisco on May 23 and concludes in New York City on July 26, 2023. The drive is based on the legendary Col. Horatio Nelson Jackson’s first transcontinental journey that took place on the same dates 120 years ago. He will be driving two special collectible vehicles. One is “Little Glory” the 1952 M38 Korean War Willys Jeep, and the other star of the campaign drive is the 1973 Winnebago RV dubbed “Marine’s Dream.” The campaign aims to give the Willys Jeep away through a sweepstakes or by auction at the conclusion of this drive.
|
|
Scott’s personal car collection includes a 1941 ½-ton Dodge truck; 1942 Chevy G506 WW2 truck; a 1948 Plymouth named “Harry;” a 1949 2-ton Chevy truck; a 1953 Chevy ¾-ton truck; 1943, ‘44, ‘45, ‘50, ‘52, ‘53, ‘62 military and civilian Willys Jeeps; 1964 VW Beetle; 1964 Ranchero; 1973 Winnebago; 1979 Chevy Blazer; 1988 Chevy 1-ton Dually 4x4; 1942 Allis Chalmers B Model; 1945 Case WW2 tug; 1948 Ford 8N; 1947 Muskva Russian motorcycle; and a few 1970s Honda and Yamaha race bikes.
When asked about his impressive collection, Scott's wife affectionately calls it a “parking lot,” but Scott refers to it as his "Motorpool," based on his time in the military as a motor transport officer. He enjoys restoring and collecting these vehicles and considers them to be a part of our country’s legacy. “I love this good old made in the USA steel,” he says proudly as he performs maintenance on “Harry” and the other vehicles.
Scott's desire to inspire young people to serve in our military and as first responders is also a driving force behind his work with Gartforvets.org (Great American Road Trip for Veterans). He wants to teach a younger generation about the history of our military and try to instill respect for our nation's history. Scott is also interested in conducting a podcast to reach out and hear from fellow veterans and first responders, allowing them to share their service stories while conducting this historic drive across the USA supporting the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
In conclusion, Captain Scott Montefusco is a man of service, adventure, and history. He has dedicated his life to serving our nation and supporting those who have also served. Through his organization, Gartforvets.org, he continues to inspire others to give back and make a difference in their communities. We wish him and his team the best of luck on their cross-country fundraiser drive and look forward to hearing more about his future endeavors.
If you would like to make a tax-deductible gift donation directly to Tunnel to Towers on behalf of the Gartforvets campaign, you may do so here.

ATTENTION AACA MEMBERS, REGIONS & CHAPTERS:
|
Captain Scott is looking for AACA members/regions/chapters, firemen, policemen, and military personnel who might want to drive the vintage Winnebago for a few miles. He is also looking for volunteers to help as they come through your town or area. His team may just need a safe place to park overnight or maybe a little mechanical assistance if something is not quite working right.
Captain Scott is also willing to take part in any local events your region or chapter may already be putting on or would like to host in honor of the trip. He would love to meet and greet with veterans and first responders along the way as well.
If you would like to follow the tour with your own vintage vehicle when they come through your town or be a point of contact should they need anything, Captain Scott would be grateful.
You can view the working route here. Please keep in mind that the route schedule is subject to change on dates based on events that may come up, severe weather, or possible breakdowns.
If you and/or your region/chapter would like to be involved, please contact Captain Scott at 385-261-4083 or thecaptain@gartforvets.org. He’s looking forward to hearing from you!

How Long Have You Been an AACA Member?
|
As a thank you for your longtime passion and dedication for the automotive hobby, AACA awards members who have been in the club for 50 years or more with a beautiful 50-year pin. This stunning award can be bestowed upon a long-time member at an AACA Nationals or regional event, or simply by sending it to you in the mail.
To receive this pin, you must be a member for at least 50 years, which do not have to be consecutive. You (or your region/chapter) must then contact National Headquarters. We will research our archives to confirm 50 years of membership.
If you believe you have been a member for 50 years or more, contact Jon Curtis at 717-534-1910 or jcurtis@aaca.org. AACA is proud of the many members who have already received this pin and who wear it equally as proudly.
