Member Story: Antique Cars in Thailand
By Dawn Hebert, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, sunrisedawn@hotmail.com
This is a member submitted article.
| | |
I have been a member of AACA for many years, but this is my first attempt at writing anything. A little background on me… Back in 2012 I traveled to Thailand for the first time, and I thought that it would be my only time. Wow was I wrong as I very unexpectedly met the love of my life there. So, now I have made this trip more than a dozen times. While in Thailand, I started to notice on the roads around where we stayed American cars and trucks from the late 1950s thru the 1960s go cruising by. Where were they going and why those cars?
Not driving myself in Thailand (too scary for me), it was hard for me to find out, but one day I was able to speak to someone who knew. There was a large night market called Train Night Market. On some weekends I would find hundreds of old cars as well as some workshops, displays and warehouses where they would work on, display and store some of these cars.
To my surprise, there are hundreds and possibly thousands of old American cars (have no idea how many really) that are highly prized and still driven all over Thailand, as well as many different local and national car clubs.
Many of the owners that I’ve been able to speak to are quite young and do not really know the history of many of these cars. Many Americans were stationed at various airports around Thailand and of course nearby Vietnam during the war years. My guess is that many of the cars were possibly brought over to Thailand and maybe Vietnam during the war and were then left here after America withdrew. I’ve seen many former U.S. military vehicles at shows, displays and even at the Farm Museum.
Over the years I’ve also learned about a few body shops that specialize only in old American and some European cars. I’ve seen some of their work and they do a really good job bringing these cars back to life. Note: Keeping them all original is almost impossible as parts are very hard to get in Thailand, plus a very high tariff is also levied on all imported parts.
A few years ago, while on a train (my main way of getting around Bangkok), I spotted a collection of antique cars in an office building parking garage. Thus far I have not found out the owner’s name, but I was told that he owns the office building of approximately 30 floors. I have photos of more than 80 different cars in that garage over the years and all are kept in turnkey condition. I did leave a copy of the AACA National magazine with one of the people there that maintains these cars. This parking garage is private and is NOT open to the public. Hopefully, you will hear from him/her sometime soon??
My personal favorite place, but not the only place, to spot old cars and trucks through the years has been the now very large Train Night Market. This market has grown quite a bit since I first discovered it about 10 years ago, but for the most part has remained undiscovered by non-Thai folks and tourists. Open only Friday to Sunday evenings, there have been some big car shows held there. Many of the surrounding buildings are now dedicated to either the showing, repair or storage of old cars and trucks.
Note: lt is worth noting that it is highly frowned upon for any of these cars to be sold for export – they want them kept in Thailand which I think is a good policy. Only brand-new cars can be imported into Thailand, NO exceptions, so these cars cannot be replaced.
Now, I’ll just let the photos both current and throughout the years do the talking... Here are only a few of the cars and trucks I’ve been able to take photos of thus far, and every trip I am on the lookout for more.
This and so much more are at the Train Night Market if you ever get the chance to go. If I have misidentified any of these vehicles I apologize.

The 1953 Fiat 8V Supersonic
by Ghia was in a farm museum.
| | |
The 1960 Oldsmobile Super 88 wagon getting major engine
work done.
| | The 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible was in a parking garage. | | |
The 1962 Olds F-85 Cutlass convertible was also in that
same parking garage.
| | The 1959 Chevy Apache 3100 pickup in a sort of permanent display in a flea market, but still easily removed for driving. | | |
The 1960 Chevrolet Impala wagon is probably a good candidate for HPOF/AACA Original as the interior still looks original and the outside appears to have a sort of clear coat
to protect it.
| | Also found in the parking garage is the 1958 Imperial Crown convertible that appears to be parade ready. | | On a side street, I spotted this rare 1955/56 International ARC 160? COE pickup. | | |
The 1992 Nissan Figaro
(1 of only 20,000 made)
was just driving by.
| | |
A 1955? Chevrolet COE obviously not stock but these COEs are popular in Thailand
as I see many more here
than the U.S.
| | |
This photo is of a recently built building made to
look like a 1960s style gas station except it was
also built to hold a real Douglas C-47 (also known
as the DC-3) airplane. In and around the building
are old cars, mostly VWs, and many visible gas pumps,
signs and other period items.

We are always looking to feature articles from AACA members in Speedster. We'd love to share your personal accounts of tours and shows you have attended, restoration projects, unique vehicle stories and history, and any other stories you think other AACA members would enjoy hearing about.
Stories should average about 500 words or less. And we love photos, so make sure to include some! Please send your photos and stories to Stacy Zimmerman at szimmerman@aaca.org.
| | How Long Have You Been an AACA Member? | | |
As a thank you for your longtime passion for and dedication to the automotive hobby, AACA awards members who have been in the club for 50 years or more with a beautiful 50-year pin. This stunning award can be bestowed upon a long-time member at an AACA Nationals or regional event, or simply by sending it to you in the mail.
To receive this pin, you must be a member for at least 50 years, which do not have to be consecutive. You (or your region/chapter) must then contact National Headquarters. We will research our archives to confirm your 50 years of membership.
AACA is proud of the many members who have already received this pin and who wear it equally as proud. If you believe you have been a member for 50 years or more, contact Jon Curtis at jcurtis@aaca.org for review of your membership history.

Of the Era: General Motors in Japan 1928
By Walt Gosden, Guest Contributor, coachworklines@aol.com
This is a member submitted article.
| | |
Promotion of a product to achieve worldwide recognition and sales extended well beyond English language locations and countries. Many automobile companies based in America recognized this and thus made a special effort to extend their recognition beyond the borders of the United States.
One of the more unique (dare I say odd) items in my archives/library is an illustrated sales folder showing all the makes of cars being offered for sale by General Motors for the 1928 model year. This large semi-colored folder shows the entire General Motors line of cars: Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Chevrolet, Cadillac, LaSalle, Buick, and Vauxhall. By 1927 the British Vauxhall automobiles were under the GM banner, although still manufactured in England.
GM wanted to reach out, so they provided the images of the cars but had the sales folder printed in the country it had intended to sell the cars in and in the language of that country. That country was Japan.
| | |
The folder shown here is 7 ½ x 10 ¾ inches closed and 16 x 20 ¼ inches unfolded. The factories in the U.S. that produced the cars are also featured as well as the GM administration building. The cover is in blue and white and features drawings of the emblems that one would find on the radiator shells and the center of the hubcaps on the actual cars. The amalgamation of all of these would remind perspective customers of all the GM products.
Sales/production paper items featuring American cars were regularly produced and printed in other lands. I have examples of simple and elaborate sales literature for Chrysler, Dodge, Packard, Franklin, Lincoln, and several other makes that were being promoted “overseas.” This is the only piece of sales literature that was printed in Japan that I have seen.
All the promotional literature that was produced was paid for by the car manufacturers. Some then charged dealerships for what they supplied to them but usually at cost. Potential customers got the brochure for free. Some of the large deluxe sales catalogs pre-WWII were works of art, and some were even hard cover or spiral bound.

ATTENTION: Regions & Chapters
$5,000 Grants Available to Regions Hosting National Shows & Tours
That Have NOT Hosted for Over Ten Years
| |
The AACA National Board of Directors realizes that the financial risk involved with hosting a national show or tour has caused many regions and chapters to be hesitant to volunteer to host a national event. Some regions simply do not have the funds available to even think about hosting.
At the National Board Meeting in Hershey, PA, the board approved a $5,000 grant for any region receiving board approval to host a national event that has not hosted one for more than ten years.
There are many opportunities to host one of these events. We have Winter Nationals available and will schedule up to three years in advance. Spring and Fall National shows are available to schedule for Eastern, Southeastern, Central and Western Divisions, also up to 3 years in advance.
Touring events share the same opportunities. Founders Tour, Sentimental Tour, Vintage Tour, Reliability Tour, Glidden Tour and all four Divisional Tours have available openings for your region to reserve for up to three years in advance.
For more information, please contact Greg Jackson, VP National Activities, at greg.jackson15@outlook.com or 704-408-6217.
Don’t miss this opportunity to host a national event. Take advantage of this special grant program while the National Board has this offer available!
| | Reminder to Region/Chapter Newsletter Editors | |
As your region/chapter newsletter editor, you must be very careful you do not print copyrighted materials or photos from contributors, especially from the Associated Press (AP) as they seem to be targeting our region publications. While the $250 fine is probably not going to break your region or chapter, it is still a waste of money. Please be diligent about not using unauthorized material.
FYI: You can always reprint any article from the Rummage Box or Speedster as long as you give proper credit.

Car Show Season is Right Around the Corner
Is YOUR Region/Chapter Prepared?
| |
When your region or chapter holds a local car show, that is your best opportunity to recruit new members. The people attending your show are there because they already have an interest in antique cars. If your event is open to non-members, those who have registered and are showing their cars are already willing to participate. These are the folks you should be engaging about how much you enjoy being an AACA member and that they should think about joining.
Now, don’t be caught empty-handed at this point! Make sure your region/chapter has something to hand out to potential new members. When you are planning your event, be sure to reach out to National Headquarters to get a supply of materials to help you.
All of these items are available to you at no charge:
-- AACA National Membership Brochure
-- AACA National Membership Application
-- Mustang Car Cutouts
-- AACA National Military Membership Application
To request a supply of these items, please email Karen and include your region, address where you would like the items mailed to and the date of your event.
Now, go out there and get those new members!

Springtime + Shows = New Members & FUN!
By Jeff Oaks, National VP Membership, tjoaks59@gmail.com
| | |
Yes, spring is in full bloom and our 2025 show and tour season is off and running. I just recently attended the Southeastern Spring Nationals that was held at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, NC. With the vehicles entered for the Nationals and the large swap meet, it was a great crowd. After this crazy winter we have had, it was good to see everyone again. Being an AACA member is like having an extended family of friends. As the slogan reads on our membership brochure, “Come for the cars, stay for the people.” I have found this to be so true many times.
As AACA members, it is our job to get the word out about our great club! We are celebrating our 90th Anniversary this year. With more than 45,000 members, we are the oldest and largest club of its kind in the world. It’s been said to be one of the yardsticks by which things are measured in the hobby. You would think that most all those who are antique car lovers know about us and are hopefully members of the club. However, to my surprise, I run across many folks at different events who have little knowledge about the AACA. When we are out traveling and run into other fellow hobbyists, we need to ask them if they are a member. If not, we need to tell them what we have going on and invite them to a meeting or show. You don’t even have to own a vehicle to be a member of the club – you just have to love old cars!
So Jeff, what can people look forward to when joining AACA? Well, I’m glad you asked! There is a whole list of items and benefits. Members can participate in National car shows and antique automobile tours across the country. These are hosted annually and often change location each year giving you the opportunity to explore different places while taking advantage of hotel and travel discounts. Members receive a subscription to our award-winning Antique Automobile magazine with over 100 color pages covering restoration projects, member cars, unique hobby perspectives, and event recaps. Also included is a subscription to AACA’s Speedster monthly e-newsletter to keep you up to date on club and library news. Members can take part in our highly regarded Judging Program. Youth activities and scholarships are available, as well as access to our world-class AACA Library and Research Center. The AACA Forums are another valued asset with all aspects of the hobby covered by our members on most any topic. These are just some of the items offered as AACA membership benefits. So, when in conversation with a potential member, please remember to mention a few of these things to help entice them.
I would be at a loss if I did not say that one of the backbones of the AACA is our local chapters and regions. This is where it all begins with local parades, tours, displays, and outings among our neighbors. It is excitement beginning in our own backyards and launching into greater travel and fun from there. I encourage all of you to keep up the good work of planning events and keeping your members involved and active. Be sure to introduce your friends to the AACA and invite them to come along for the ride. At the end of the day, it’s all about having FUN!!!

Have You Ever Wanted to Stay at the Hershey Lodge
During Hershey Week in October?

Selling out this room block is the best way we can ensure that the auction remains a part of our event. The auction is back in 2025 and we already have the block set up to take reservations.
