Ringing in the New Year

By Stacy Zimmerman, Speedster Editor, szimmerman@aaca.org

Well, another year is coming to an end. Does anyone else think that 2024 just flew by – I mean faster than I normally think years fly by? Maybe it’s just because I’m getting older? Maybe I just had a lot going on this year and didn’t have time to think about it until now? Either way, 2025 is headed straight for us and there’s no stopping it now!

A new year means new beginnings. It’s a chance to wipe the slate clean and start again. No matter what happened in your life in 2024, it doesn’t have to spill over into 2025 (unless you want it to). Look at the calendar change as an opportunity with endless possibilities.

Even though the concept of New Year’s resolutions has been around for something like 4,000 years, I’ve never really been one to sit down and make a long list of all the things I want to “fix” about myself or my life. Over the last few years, I’ve taken to the concept of focusing on a phrase or word and doing things during the year to fulfill that for myself. For example, for 2024 I chose “love myself more.” This led me to things like learning yoga, walking outside more, taking “me” days, hiring a personal trainer and volunteering at a local animal shelter. These things may not be what you would have done to fulfill that statement, but that’s what I like about this concept. We could all choose the same exact phrase but fulfill it in different ways – ways that are meaningful to ourselves. Maybe you would have fulfilled “love myself more” by driving your car more because it brings you joy?

So, I’m guessing you would like to know what I’ve chosen for 2025 now, right? I’m happy to share that I have chosen “be more present.” What does that mean to me? Well, it means that I want to try my best to be in the moment during the moment. While I don’t know everything I will end up doing this year to fulfill this concept, I do know that I want to do more of the things I want to do, go to more of the places I want to go and spend more time with the people that mean the most to me, and I want to “be more present” in those moments. Life is too short not to be. How would you fulfill “be more present” in regard to AACA and our hobby? Maybe by showing up for region meetings or participating more in events?

Whether you decide to make some New Year’s resolutions or try this phrase/word thing with me, let’s all commit to including AACA and this hobby as part of it. Let’s make sure we lift this club up as we lift ourselves up. Let’s leave behind the should’ve, would’ve, could’ve and start driving forward…

Here we come 2025!

Are you ready for us?

Thank You to the 2024 AACA National Awards Committee

Every year in December, the AACA National Awards Committee makes the trek to Hershey, PA, to meet for a long weekend at your National Headquarters to choose your National Award winners for that year. Once this dedicated group of volunteers has done its work, all of the National Award winners are notified that they have won an award which will be presented to them at the Annual Convention in February. They are not told what award they have won, just that they have won one. This is our way of still keeping some surprise and mystery about the awards.

Many thanks to the 2024 AACA National Awards Committee! We are looking very forward to honoring our 2024 National Award winners in Charlotte/Concord, North Carolina, at the 2025 Annual Convention.

Bringing a Positive End to 2024

By Steve Moskowitz, AACA National CEO, aaca1@aaca.org

With Hershey having its best weather in years and the Huntsville show being at such a unique venue, we finished off 2024 with a bang! Even though it’s the end of the year, your club is not sitting back and taking it easy. We are constantly working to make your member experience better and continue our quest to preserve automotive history. Of course, we need your help to do this!

As you consider your year-end taxes and philanthropy, hopefully you will consider making a special tax-deductible gift to your club. We hope that those who are required to take a mandatory distribution from their retirement accounts will consider AACA as part of your tax savings plans. Please discuss this with your accountant.

Many of you have already given, some have not. Our sincerest THANK YOU to everyone who has continued to support this club with your time and donations! We hate to ask again as we truly realize there are many deserving charities you can choose from for your charitable donations. However, the club is continuing its quest to become stronger each year and your generosity helps us to maintain and grow our member services.

So, we are asking you to please seriously consider making a tax-deductible contribution before the end of the year – it will make all the difference for the future of this club. You can make a general donation to the club, or you can specify your donation to go to the library endowment or the building fund endowment. You can make your donation one of three ways:

Click here to donate online – easy and fast!

Call us at 717-534-1910 and we will take a donation

via credit card over the phone.

Mail a check off to us right away.

Send to: AACA, 800 W. Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, PA 17033

Remember, you do not have to itemize to take this deduction and any donation amount is appreciated! We will send you an acknowledgement letter for your records.

ATTENTION REGIONS & CHAPTERS: DON'T FORGET!

Your Reporting Forms Are Due January 31

Just a reminder that your Region/Chapter Officer Reporting Forms and Roster Reporting Forms are due by January 31. These forms were mailed to your current President or Secretary in November. If you need another copy of the forms, you can click here to download them from the AACA website, or we can mail you another set if need be.

Please return the forms to Sue Eitnier at seitnier@aaca.org. You can also mail them to AACA, 800 W. Hersheypark Dr., Hershey, PA 17033.

AACA Library Year End News

By Jen Wolfe, AACA Library Director, jwolfe@aaca.org

Automobile Quarterly For Sale

From The Library

One of the most popular items gifted to the library every year are volumes of Automobile Quarterly. If you’ve always wanted to own a set or are trying to fill the holes in your existing AQ collection, consider the library’s duplicate reserves! Even if we don’t have what you need on the shelf right now, we maintain a wait list of people to reach out to when we get an issue they’re looking for to assemble a complete set. Help the library keep this important publication in circulation and with the car community, so it can be appreciated in the years to come! If you’re interested in purchasing copies of AQ from the library, contact the library staff at 717-534-2082.

Magazine Donations Reminder

We’ve been getting a lot of inquiries lately from people asking about donating magazines to the library. While we are so grateful that you think of us, magazines are a good example of a type of material to which the library applies some restrictions. At present, we will take magazines that are from the 1940s or earlier – assuming we do not already own a copy of them. As with all donation inquiries, please call or email the library ahead of time to let us know what (and how much) you intend to bring.

2025 Annual Convention

If you’re joining us this year in Charlotte, NC, for the Annual Convention, you will find librarians Amoi and Jen at the following activities:

  • Trade Show (Thursday from 3-5 p.m., Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m.-2 p.m.)
  • Welcome Reception (Thursday evening)
  • Seminars (Friday & Saturday – sessions day and time TBA)
  • Regions & Chapters Dinner, and Speakeasy Casino Night (Friday evening)
  • General Membership Meeting (Saturday afternoon)
  • National Awards Banquet (Saturday evening)

As usual, we’ll be selling duplicate books at our booth in the trade show – don’t leave the Convention without a few titles to add to your personal collection!

Reminder: New Year’s Hours

The library will be closed starting at noon on Tuesday, December 31, through Wednesday, January 1, for the New Year holiday. We will reopen for our normal operating hours on Thursday, January 2.

South Carolina Region Chapter Celebrates the Season

By John Montgomery, Taylors, SC, bertoneman@aol.com

This is a member submitted article.

The South Carolina Region Chapter hosted their club elections in conjunction with a Christmas party on December 8. I will be the chapter president for the next two years. It’s a great group and I’m looking forward to serving. We wish everyone a wonderful holiday season!

The Mille Miglia Comes to the USA: Venice Region Hosts Stamp Stop

By Howard Mintz, Venice, FL, hmintz1@optonline.net

This is a member submitted article.

We’ve all heard of the Mille Miglia, the famous Italian race first run in 1927. Since 1977, when the event was renewed after a 16-year hiatus, the MM has been run as a street-legal road rally with entry rules limiting participation to vehicles of the same type that ran in the event’s heyday.

In 2024, the Mille Miglia organization ran events in China and the United Arab Emirates. In 2025, for the first time, a Mille Miglia will be run in the United States as the “1000 Miglia.” Further research revealed that the three-day event is to be run in Florida beginning on February 22. Since I live in Florida this was exciting news.

The modern 1000 Miglia permits three classes of cars with awards for each class. The first class is for car models that participated in the classic, pre-1957, Mille Miglia. The next class is for any sport-type vehicle subject to acceptance by the organizers, typically Porsches, Alfas, Ferraris, and the like. The third class is for modern supercars, again subject to organizer acceptance.

The planned rally route starts in Miami and proceeds to Naples and Tampa on the first day (February 23). The second day (February 24) starts in Tampa, moves to Cape Canaveral, and ends in West Palm Beach. The final day (February 25) goes from West Palm Beach back to Miami where awards are presented.

I quickly realized that my hometown, Venice, Florida, lies right in between Naples and Tampa and would be a great stopping point for the Miglia cars on day one. I contacted our Venice Region AACA president, John McKeon, who contacted the 1000 Miglia organizers. They quickly agreed to a “Stamp Stop” in Venice for participants to roll in/out and get their paperwork stamped with a Venice Centennial logo. That’s right, the Miglia will visit Venice during its Centennial Year, adding another interesting event to the many celebrations going on throughout the year. Come visit us!

Our club is providing all the volunteers and logistics, and coordinating with city officials for traffic control, use of downtown Venice during the stop, and promotion of the event.

The parade of classic cars and streets lined with spectators promises to be a memorable event for the town, the organizers, and the lucky drivers and navigators. Anyone interested in registering a car for the race can do so at the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida website.

And if you plan to visit Venice during our centennial year, consider the end of March when our club hosts our 35th Annual Car Show in downtown Venice on Sunday, March 30.

Please scroll all the way to the end of Speedster to find the answer.

Member Story: My 1956 Buick Special Riviera

By Bill Baites, Richmond, VA, bbaites@me.com

This is a member submitted article.

I am a new member of AACA and happy to be a part of this group. I own a 1956 Buick Special Riviera that my parents bought new in Greensboro, North Carolina (my hometown), in 1956. When my father died unexpectedly in 1973, the Buick was stored in my grandparents’ barn.

Around 2012, I found a wonderful man by the name of Marvin Oliver in Greensboro, who is no longer with us, who managed Green’s Ford Body Shop and restored vintage autos on the side. Over two years, he lovingly brought this family member back to life. In 2014, we had a “coming out” party for the Buick with a ’50s theme, music, guests dressed in ’50s clothes and great time was had by all.

It is now stored in Greensboro, NC, until sometime this summer when I can move her to Richmond. I have only lived here since May 2021. I look forward to participating in the Virginia Chapter of AACA!

The original photo shows me sitting in the back seat when the car was brand new! The second one shows the condition of the car when it was brought in after many years of being stored in an open shed. The last one is the Buick today.

We want to hear from you!!

We are always looking to feature articles from AACA members in Speedster. We'd love to share your personal accounts of tours and shows you have attended, restoration projects, unique vehicle stories and history, and any other stories you think other AACA members would enjoy hearing about.

Stories should average about 500 words or less. And we love photos, so make sure to include some! Please send your photos and stories to Stacy Zimmerman at szimmerman@aaca.org

2025 Hershey Flea Market & Car Corral Pre-Registration Information

By R.J. "Mac" MacAdam, Flea Market/Car Corral Registration Chairman,

Hershey Region AACA, fallmeet@hersheyaaca.org

On behalf of the Hershey Region, we thank you for attending the 2024 Fall Nationals. We hope you had an enjoyable experience. On a side note, please ignore the many FALSE RUMORS in reference to the Eastern Fall Nationals moving from the current site at the Hershey Entertainment Complex – none of them are true! (And yes, they are still flowing!)

As a reminder, the Eastern Fall Nationals will again be held the first full week in October starting Tuesday and ending with the judged car show on Friday. Mark your calendar for the 2025 show October 7-10. We have already begun working on the 2025 show in which Vance Wolfe will be the Fall Meet Chairman and Bonnie Kulikowski will be his assistant.

The pre-registration applications for the 2025 flea market and car corral were mailed out Saturday, December 21, 2024, except for Canadian vendors because the post office refused to take them. They said to hold onto them until the first week of the new year. If you do not receive your packet in the mail by January 20, 2025, you should call 717-566-7720 on Monday or Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. eastern time or email fallmeet@hersheyaaca.org

Please read the following important information regarding the submission of pre-registration cards:

1. A "Space Relocation Form" will be enclosed in each vendor's packet. This will be the only form accepted for space relocation. If you write your request on the pre-registration card, or a separate sheet of paper, etc., it will NOT be accepted. Also, be advised we make assignments using the postmark on the envelope. The space(s) must be available after the pre-registration phase in order for you to be relocated. (Additional spaces are NOT SOLD during pre-registration. The May/June issue of Antique Automobile magazine will include the procedure for acquiring spaces during summer registration.)

2. Pay close attention to the deadline on the card. The pre-registration postmark deadline is February 15, 2025. Your spaces will be in jeopardy if the postmarked deadline is not followed. The registered vendor is ultimately responsible for the timely submission of the pre-registration material.

3. If your card or check is not signed it will be returned to you. That will also delay your postmark position for relocation.

4. Checks deposited that are returned for insufficient funds, account was closed, etc., will be charged a $35 administration fee.

5. The dates and times for which our telephones will be staffed will be printed on the pre-registration card. If you leave a message, please speak slowly and clearly leaving your name, telephone number, AACA member number and a very short message.

6. If you DO NOT receive your new 2025 AACA membership card by January 20th, DO NOT wait to mail your pre-registration card. Write your AACA member number in the space provided on the card and mail it with your check or money order.

Special Room Offering for Hershey 2025

Last year, in conjunction with RM Sotheby’s, we were able to obtain a discounted rate at the Hershey Lodge during the Eastern Fall Nationals which most simply refer to as “Hershey.” Thanks to AACA members who took advantage of this deal, we were able to sell out the entire block of 900 room nights. Selling out this room block is the best way we can ensure that the auction remains a part of our event. The auction is back in 2025 and we already have the block set up to take reservations. Please consider making your reservation now clicking here. This year’s rate is $299 a night. Thank you all for your support last year!

“The Next Generation” – Project Pedal Car

Coming to the Carlisle Auctions Facebook Page January 2025

By Jason Ramey, Carlisle Auctions, jasonr@carlisleevents.com

Calling all pedal car enthusiasts! Filming is underway for a new series that will document thirteen SUN Tech Collision Repair Technology students and their instructor as they bring seven customized pedal cars to life!

The series set to air on the Carlisle Auctions Facebook Page in January will follow the students and their builds from concept and design all the way to the Spring Collector Car Auction in Carlisle, PA, where their cars will be sold on the block at no reserve. Proceeds from the sale will go to the school and the students.

Carlisle Auctions was contacted by John Reeder, the Collision Repair Technology instructor at SUN Area Technical Institute located in New Berlin, PA, about a project his class is working on. He explained that his students will be completing pedal cars and simply asked if he could bring them to the Spring Collector Car Auction in Carlisle to raise money for the students.

After learning more about the project, we were beyond excited to be a part of it. So many thoughts came to mind. As excited as I was, I knew very little about pedal cars. Will the cars sell at auction? How much will they bring? Does anyone even care about pedal cars? Ultimately, I wondered what we could do to make this project a success and a once in a lifetime experience for the students.

One thing that is very important to Carlisle Auctions is keeping the collector car hobby alive from one generation to the next. That means taking an interest in our youth and taking time to pass down knowledge and skills.

As it turns out, each student has a story of how they work on cars with their dad or helped their grandfather restore some type of car. The class will teach these students the skills they need to work in a body shop, but truly they are there to learn the skills they need to work on and restore old cars.

It would have been easy to simply sell the cars at auction, but we wanted to do something special and take it to the next level. The idea of doing a series that would give people an inside view of the project while getting to know the students and their stories just made sense. This is a fantastic group of students and we thought this would be a great way for people to get to know them and get them a fan base.

Be there with us as concepts come to life. See the grand reveal and be part of the action on auction day as seven of the coolest pedal cars you will ever see cross the auction block.

What will they look like? How much will they bring? Only one way to find out! Like and follow the Carlisle Auctions Facebook Page and tune in to “The Next Generation” – Project Pedal Car which begins January 2025!

$5,000 Grants Available to Regions Hosting National Shows & Tours

That Have NOT Hosted for Over Ten Years

By Wayne Tuck, AACA VP National Activities, rwtuck@comcast.net

The AACA National Board of Directors realizes that the financial risk involved with hosting a national show or tour has caused many regions and chapters to be hesitant to volunteer to host a national event. Some regions simply do not have the funds available to even think about hosting.

At the National Board Meeting in Hershey, PA, the board approved a $5,000 grant for any region receiving board approval to host a national event that has not hosted one for more than ten years.

There are many opportunities to host one of these events. We have Winter Nationals available and will schedule up to three years in advance. Spring and Fall National shows are available to schedule for Eastern, Southeastern, Central and Western Divisions, also up to 3 years in advance.

Touring events share the same opportunities. Founders Tour, Sentimental Tour, Vintage Tour, Reliability Tour, Glidden Tour and all four Divisional Tours have available openings for your region to reserve for up to three years in advance.

For more information, please contact Wayne Tuck, VP National Activities, at rwtuck@comcast.net or 609-240-1561.

Don’t miss this opportunity to host a national event. Take advantage of this special grant program while the National Board has this offer available!

Trivia Answer

Chrysler leveraged DeSoto for export markets because the name was derived from the Spanish explorer, Hernando de Soto (1500-1542), who was the first European to make his way across the Mississippi River. He died on its banks. The company felt that DeSoto was a more worldly designation in comparison to such America-focused entries like Plymouth…particularly in Spanish speaking countries. DeSoto was always recognized by its mid-priced, value-for-money ethic, which is why it also became a darling of the taxi fleet. Just watch Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and see.
