My First Article

By Chrissy Arnold, Speedster Editor

carnold@aaca.org

Hello Speedster readers! My name is Chrissy Arnold, and I am thrilled to be writing to you for the very first time as part of the AACA team. Many of you may have already seen my name in emails or online, but I am excited to officially introduce myself here. I recently stepped into the role of Marketing and Advertising Coordinator, and it has already been a wonderful experience getting to know this community.

Before I share a bit more about myself, I want to recognize someone who set a very high bar: Stacy Zimmerman. Stacy made Speedster something members genuinely look forward to each month. It is clear how deeply she cares about this club and its people. I am incredibly grateful for the foundation she built, and I fully appreciate the big shoes I am stepping into.

My very first AACA event was the Hershey Fall Nationals this past year, and it was the moment I knew AACA was going to be my forever home away from home. I met so many members who welcomed me instantly and made me feel like I had been part of the club for years. The enthusiasm and camaraderie I experienced were unforgettable. Seeing thousands of people gather to celebrate history, craftsmanship and shared passion showed me how special this organization truly is.

My professional experience has always focused on creative work and communication, and I have always had an interest in cars. I even found myself hanging out and cruising with the “car crowd” back in my high school days. Ironically, that ’87 CRX I was driving at the time is a collectible antique now. Boy, I wish I still had her! As an adult, I’ve attended and even shown a car or two at events like the Carlisle Ford Nationals. While those shows were different in style and atmosphere, they gave me a deep appreciation for the stories behind the vehicles and the people who care for them. That appreciation translates naturally into the antique and preservation world, and I feel lucky to now be part of a community that values history in such a meaningful way.

Looking ahead, I hope to continue building strong communication, celebrating our members and highlighting the incredible events and vehicles that make this club so great. My goal is to keep Speedster enjoyable, informative and reflective of the energy and passion that define AACA. I also look forward to featuring more member stories, because your experiences are what bring this hobby to life.

Thank you for welcoming me so warmly. I cannot wait to meet more of you, learn from you and be part of AACA’s continued growth. Please feel free to reach out anytime. I love connecting with our members and want our communication to always reflect what matters most to you!

Do You Have an Official AACA Car Sign for Your Car Yet?

Deadline to order for Charlotte and Las Vegas is March 6!

This is the only official AACA recommended car show sign and is intended for use at AACA events. The AACA car sign format, styled similarly to other Concours signs, when properly weighted or staked would limit potential damage to vehicles if bumped or blown. Signs are 16.5" tall and 12" wide and are made of hard plastic to withstand the elements. These signs are only available to AACA members and are custom created to tell your vehicle's story and history.

AACA car signs cost $45 plus shipping and handling. Add an image or images for $5 each. PA residents also pay sales tax.

Please allow 4-5 weeks for the entire process from start to finish.

Click here for more information and instructions.

Email Jon Curtis at AACA Headquarters if you would like to have a sign made.

Trivia Question

As automobile speed increased, engineers were challenged by a critical component that went round and round and could deform at the most inopportune time, particularly when it was being called upon to perform at its utmost. What was that vulnerable rotating mass?

Please scroll all the way to the end of Speedster to find the answer.

Bookends of a Legacy: Owning the First and Last Oldsmobile

By John Masters, Millsboro, DE, johnnym7@juno.com

This is a member submitted article.

I purchased my 1902 Model “R” Curved Dash Oldsmobile in 1986 as a basket case. It was intended to be a project for my U.S. Air Force retirement. By serial number, it is the 1,064th production Oldsmobile built. It took me seven years (no internet back then) to resurrect it into a driving vehicle. It was restored as a driver and is not 100% museum quality. Certain liberties had to be taken to ensure it was a safe driver. It has been featured in several local and national publications. When I lived in Kansas, it had the license plate 1STOLDS (first Olds).

When GM announced the end of the Oldsmobile line with the 2004 models, the last 500 cars were given special badging and painted in a Dark Cherry Metallic color not normally found on other Olds cars. Through my local dealer, I was able to secure one of these 2004 Aleros. It is number 222 of the last 500, built on April 27, which also happened to be my birthday. In Kansas, it had the license plate LSTOLDS (last Olds).

Both cars are street legal and are driven often to keep them operational. I have often shown both cars together with the special license plates. As I now live in Delaware, I was not able to secure the same plate numbers again. I still have the Kansas plates without registration tags and put them on for shows, then remove them to drive home. In the time I owned them, I have not found any other private owner who has both a first and last edition Oldsmobile. A very unique pair.

We are always looking to feature articles from AACA members in Speedster. We'd love to share your personal accounts of tours and shows you have attended, restoration projects, unique vehicle stories and history, and any other stories you think other AACA members would enjoy hearing about.

Stories should average 500 words or less. And we love photos, so make sure to include some! Please send your photos and stories to Chrissy Arnold

AACA LIBRARY & RESEARCH CENTER

New Display at the Library

By Jen Wolfe, AACA Library Director

jwolfe@aaca.org

Back in December I teased the announcement of a new display area in the library. During Hershey Fall Nationals, were able to acquire three exhibit cases that we installed in one of our meeting rooms. The staff discussed how we’d like to use them, and after much conversation we came up with too many great ideas to choose just one for permanent display! So instead, we have chosen to do a rotating exhibit every 6-12 months – we just have too many great items in the collection we want to share.

We wanted to start off by highlighting some items from the Flat Files collection, which we’ve divided into 3 sub-categories (one for each display case): collectibles, travel, and popular culture. Here are some of the library’s artifacts you can currently view:

Collectibles

Trading cards, matchbooks, patches, and stamps

Travel

Pennsylvania licenses/registration, hotel brochures, maps, stickers and decals, and postcards

Pop Culture

Stereoscope and 3D slides/equipment, comics, cartoons and jokes, video games, movies, and art

AACA Library Collectibles Display
Library Travel Display
Pop Culture Flat Files Library

Many of these are rarely seen items from the collection, but which represent important facets of automobile history and culture. The Flat Files display will be available at the library for viewing for about a year, at which time we’ll replace it with one of our other exciting display ideas!

2026 Annual Convention Recap

Another Convention is behind us, and by all accounts it was a great event in Chantilly, VA, earlier this month. We took in so much positive feedback from attendees, and were thrilled to hear that everyone had such a wonderful time. We’d like to thank everyone who stopped by the AACA Library booth in the Trade Show to purchase duplicate books from us, or to check out our Bookmobile – we appreciate the support! Amoi and I really enjoyed seeing everyone again this year, and spending time with you at all the exciting activities throughout the Convention – we’re already looking forward to next year!

Savoy Museum to Showcase Their Collection of AACA Award Winners

By Harry Krix, White, GA, hrkrix@gmail.com

This is a member submitted article.

It was announced recently by Tom Shinall, Director of Curatorial Services at the Savoy Museum that the next upcoming exhibit at the museum will be titled “And the Winner Is…” an exceptional display of national award-winning cars from the Savoy Collection that have received AACA National First Prize, Grand National Winner, and National Historic Preservation awards, dating all the way back to 1976.

photo of Savoy Museum provided by Harry Krix and Marie Harrington

Of the 20+ AACA winners in the Savoy Collection, the museum will be displaying six cars, four of which have never been on display at the museum. Tom said “We plan on supplementing the display in the Main Gallery with canvas art prints highlighting the other winning cars from our collection.”

Kraig Bolus, President of the host Region for the 2026 Winter Nationals, Lake Allatoona Region, commented “This will be a wonderful opportunity to attend our show and also get to see some top flight cars seldom shown in a public setting. We are very excited to be a part of Savoy’s exhibit that will showcase some of these great cars.”

$3,000-$5,000 Grants Available to Regions Hosting National Activities

The AACA National Board of Directors realizes that the financial risk involved with hosting a national show or tour has caused many regions and chapters to be hesitant to volunteer to host a national event. Some regions simply do not have the funds available to even think about hosting.

The board has approved a grant program for any region receiving board approval to host a national event that has not hosted one for more than ten years. Here's how it breaks down:

  • $5,000 grants available to regions hosting national car shows
  • $5,000 grants available to regions hosting national 5-day tours
  • $3,000 grants available to regions hosting national 3-day tours

There are many opportunities to host one of these events. We have Winter Nationals available and will schedule up to three years in advance. Spring and Fall National shows are available to schedule for Eastern, Southeastern, Central and Western Divisions, also up to 3 years in advance.

Touring events share the same opportunities. Founders Tour, Sentimental Tour, Vintage Tour, Reliability Tour, Glidden Tour and all four Divisional Tours have available openings for your region to reserve for up to three years in advance.

For more information, please contact Greg Jackson, VP National Activities, at greg.jackson15@outlook.com or 704-408-6217.

Don’t miss this opportunity to host a national event. Take advantage of this special grant program while the National Board has this offer available!

Trivia Answer

Automobile speeds increased faster than road wheel integrity, which is why wooden wheels disappeared sooner rather than later. For example, when Hudson went racing, it had to reinforce its steel wheels to sustain the high cornering loads that could deform or even break them. Excessive lug nut and mounting hub strain was also a concern. In NASCAR competition, Hudson wheels included a secondary steel insert welded into the primary wheel. This created what was essentially a two-in-one, severe-duty variant. Meanwhile, on the road, wheel covers would also routinely dislodge during aggressive cornering as steel wheels flexed.

It makes you wonder about modern radial tires on antique wheels, doesn’t it? So watch out for those disappearing wheel covers if you are running radial tires on old car wheels (which can flex). They weren’t originally specified for them at what are now routinely higher speeds.
