Important Hershey Information
By "Mac" MacAdam, Flea Market/Car Corral Registration Chairman,
|
Summer registration is happening RIGHT NOW for the Hershey flea market, car corral and show vehicles. To acquire space(s), you must request a registration card from AACA National Headquarters. Because we are getting close to the registration deadline, please call us ASAP at 717-534-1910. We will send you your registration forms immediately.
With a show as big as Hershey, there are a lot of moving parts for our region volunteers to coordinate. Please help us by reviewing this important information:
1. On the Show Car/Special Events registration card that you request from National Headquarters you can also choose to receive awards banquet tickets, antique car trailer parking reservations and juniors at Hershey information. (The ladies’ luncheon has been discontinued.)
2. SHOW CAR REGISTRATION ONLY: You may register online here right now. You must print the registration form and submit it along with your check to Rich Spina, Hershey Region AACA Show Car Chairman, 1313 W. Market Street, Pottsville, PA 17901.
3. There is a $20 parking fee for show car trailers parking on Boathouse Road. The fee covers the period of Tuesday, October 3, at 7 a.m. through Saturday, October 7, at 12 p.m. All vehicles must be removed by 12 p.m. Saturday or they will be towed per order of Derry Township Police.
4. You must return the completed registration card and check to Hershey Region. There will be a pre-addressed envelope enclosed in the packet that you request from National Headquarters. PLEASE read all of the information that accompanies your registration card(s).
5. Cards/checks not signed will be returned for signatures and could jeopardize your request for space(s).
6. If you have a special location request, you should send a note along with your flea market or car corral registration card. Spaces are assigned by the postmark on the envelope. You can ask for your check to be returned in the event we cannot fulfill your request. If you will accept spaces anywhere, you need not send any note. (NOTES written on registration cards will not be honored and you will be assigned at the discretion of the field chairman.)
7. Please read ALL accompanying information that will be enclosed with the registration card(s) you receive from National Headquarters. Your signature on the card confirms you have read, understand and will obey AACA and Hershey Region rules and regulations.
8. Please pay close attention to the firm postmark deadline of August 15 on the registration card. We need ample time to make assignments, enter the data and send the information to our printer. There is a very short lead time to accomplish this task.
9. TO RESERVE & RENT A SCOOTER OR GOLF CART: ScooterBug has been contracted for the 2023 Hershey show to provide pre-reserved, single passenger ECVs and double occupant golf carts for those guests who have a valid, state-issued driver's license & handicapped placard in the state in which you reside. Guests can pre-reserve this mobility equipment online at http://www.scooterbug.com/aaca (preferred) or call 800-726-8284 directly to reserve. There are NO refunds under any circumstances once the payment is received and equipment is reserved. (NOTE: Personal mobility vehicles are not registered by ScooterBug personnel.)
10. YES, YOU CAN BRING YOUR OWN SCOOTER: Personal electric mobility vehicles are authorized; however, they must be registered at one of the three registration areas. More information will be available in the literature you receive with your registration card.
11. Flea market and car corral windshield stickers and other important information will be mailed at the end of August.
12. SALES TAX LICENSE: If you do not have a sales tax license, you can apply online at https://mypath.pa.gov or call 717-783-1405. Do not use the old pa100 website as it has been discontinued. If you need more information, visit our website at hershey.aaca.com. IMPORTANT: DO NOT wait for your tax license number to arrive. Send your flea market registration card and check to the Hershey Region and simply write "applied for" above the Tax ID space on the registration card.

Yard Sale Volunteers Wanted!
|
October is still a few months away, but the library’s annual Yard Sale will be here before we know it so we’re already in the planning stage for this popular event! We learned a few things from last year’s sale, so we’re putting the call out early for anyone who would like to volunteer their time to help this year both at the sale and in the library during Hershey week.
We’ll need assistance with everything from helping attendees line up for the sale, managing the number of people in the tents at a time, working the inside of the tent, ringing up sales, set up and tear down, and anything else library staff need help with. Elsewhere during the week we’ll need volunteers to greet people at the library doors and help them find their way around, as well as helping staff manage the crowds that week. Shifts will be 2 hours long, and we’ll need help Monday-Thursday of Hershey week. Please contact Jen Wolfe or Matt Hocker for more information, questions, or to sign up for a shift. Thank you in advance – it takes all of us to make events like this a success!

Meet Orwin Middleton: The Scientist and Car Enthusiast Behind
the Reunion with the 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso
This is a member submitted story.
|
|
The story of the reunion between Carole Wilson Bloom and her beloved 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso not only revolves around cherished memories but also introduces us to the man behind the car's preservation, Orwin Middleton, a passionate scientist and classic car enthusiast who purchased the iconic Lusso in 1986. (Photo Credit: Seth DeDoes)
As a scientist, Orwin has dedicated his life to unraveling the mysteries of the rocket science world. His inquisitive mind and attention to detail, essential qualities in the field of science, have translated seamlessly into his love for classic cars. The 1963 Ferrari Lusso, with its intricate engineering and timeless design, captured Orwin's heart, and he took it upon himself to restore and maintain the car's pristine condition. Little did he know that his passion for classic cars and 30+ year search for the history of his prized Lusso would lead him to play a significant role in reuniting Carole Wilson with her long-lost car.
Beyond his passion for classic cars, Orwin's connection to The Beach Boys added an intriguing dimension to the story. As Alma, Orwin's wife, cruised in her 1955 Thunderbird, the iconic song "Fun, Fun, Fun" by The Beach Boys played on the radio, unknowingly linking the musical world to the automotive one. Carole's past marriage to The Beach Boys' drummer created an unexpected intersection of lives, adding more depth to the narrative.

When Carole and Orwin finally met, it was a moment filled with emotion and nostalgia. The Lusso, which had been missing from Carole's life for over four decades, was now in the hands of a true enthusiast who had kept the car's spirit alive. Orwin's gesture of allowing Carole to once again take the wheel of her cherished vehicle was a heartwarming testament to his appreciation for the car's history and the sentimental value it held for its original owner.

|
For fellow car enthusiasts eager to witness the beauty of this 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso, the opportunity awaits at the 2023 Western Divisional Tour from September 25-29, 2023, on California’s beautiful Central Coast.
Of course, Orwin and Alma will undoubtedly be on hand with their iconic Lusso to trade stories and make new memories with all you car junkies out there. It truly is these connections between enthusiasts and automobiles that stand as a testament to the passion and devotion shared by car lovers, as well as the rich history and sentimental value they carry. Little Detroit Chapter Celebrates with Ice Cream

What's better than antique cars and ice cream on a hot summer day? The Little Detroit Chapter of North Carolina met at the nostalgic Scoops Ice Cream Shop in Rutherfordton, NC. What a fun way to cool off and great way to celebrate Collector Car Appreciation Day on July 14.

Heat Won’t Stop the Suwannee River Region from Celebrating
This is a member submitted story.
|
|
The Suwannee River Region AACA loves to host the National Collector Car Appreciation Day every year. This year was no exception. On July 18th, we met at Sal’s Italian Deli in Lake City, Florida, for some great food, a good time and great cars.
For the last 3 years we have had rain for this event, and I mean pouring down rain. But this year there was no rain in sight, instead we had to endure the blistering heat. At 5 p.m., it was still 98 degrees with a heat index of over 100 degrees. Even with these temperatures we had a good turnout.
It was quite the challenge trying to get people to leave the cool A/C inside and come out of the restaurant to get a group picture and hear the resolution. Can’t say as I blame them. But even with the extreme heat, we had a good time.
Our region sponsored root beer floats and homemade cookies and brownies, which everyone loved. Thank you to Barbara Richards, Marybeth Downs and Marie Towner for helping bake and serve.
|
|
This heat is so hard on our older cars and so many don’t have A/C, but we still had quite the variety of cars show up. Don Downs brought out his newly acquired Plymouth Belvedere convertible – a very fast and beautiful car, and of course my favorite color red.
One of the cars that really caught my eye was a 1960 Buick Electra convertible owned by Dennis Roberts. He also brought his two grandsons with him to shine it up. Just watching these young boys be so careful with their grandad’s car was heartwarming. You could just see that both of those boys will grow up to love the classics. That’s what this day was all about. If we can pass our knowledge, our passion, and the love we have for our cars on to them, then we can be sure that our hobby will live on in the eyes of our children and grandchildren.
Thank you to SEMA for making this event available each year!

FIVA Representative Visits AACA
|
FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles) is a worldwide organization dedicated to the protection, preservation and promotion of historic vehicles and related culture, as well as their safe use – and it is proud to be a non-governmental partner of UNESCO.
FIVA Vice-President of Membership Gabriela Magureanu stopped by AACA National Headquarters earlier this month to take a tour, learn more about AACA and to discuss possible ways our two organizations could work together in the future. Each group presented to each other books about the history of their organizations as small tokens of appreciation.
Gabriela is also the current President of the Retromobil Club Romania. Her husband Ovidiu joined her during the visit. The couple resides in Bucharest, Romania.
For those who would like to know more about FIVA…
FIVA was founded in 1966 by an international group of historic vehicle organizations, who felt the time had come for a worldwide body to promote and guide the interests of the historic vehicle movement throughout the world.
FIVA’s primary objective is to encourage the safe use on the roads of self-propelled, mechanical vehicles more than 30 years old, for the benefit of their owners, dedicated enthusiasts, and the general public. But there’s far more to the historic vehicle world than simply driving an old machine: ownership broadens your outlook, creates a new circle of friends, and above all brings a huge amount of fun.
FIVA is headquartered in Torino, Italy.

Membership Corner: Ideas for Recruiting New Members
|
|
I am a second-generation car club member, so I’ve been in it most of my life. As I think back, my dad was an ‘independent collector’ until he was in his mid-40s. He also was not typically a ‘joiner’ of clubs and such. It was also a time when several marque clubs sprang up in the area. The Model A Club was in existence and even though he had one he hadn’t joined the club. To me, the best way to recruit new members is a one-to-one strategy. Dad finally joined the local startup Model T Club because one individual showed interest in him and becoming part of the group. We still belong to this local club.
Our involvement in the local Model A Club stemmed from a man at a shopping center car show talking to my father and saying, “I understand you have a ‘30 Chevrolet. We’d really like to have you bring it and show it with our Model As.” Thus began a membership which lasted until my father’s death nearly 20 years later. This membership ‘recruiter’ was not a boisterous man, although he was a traveling salesman. He did not fit the stereotype used car or snake oil salesman. And I’m not quite sure how we ended up in the Chevrolet Club. Probably someone from the Model T Club suggested it, and it was a natural fit since our real passion was Chevrolets.
How we ended up in AACA goes back to our involvement with Chevrolet Club. While at a Chevrolet Club meeting, one of the members said, “Hey, are you going to the AACA meet in Cedar Rapids?” I then asked when and what was AACA? He explained, “Well, it’s a lot like the Chevrolet Club, but they accept all brands of vehicles.” I signed up and went. The personal contact prompted me to join. I later noticed in some car books I’d collected from childhood that they showed the AACA logo and described AACA, but it never occurred to us to join the club. Maybe print advertising can attract a few, but I think the one-to-one way is the most effective recruitment approach.
Another recruiting tool I think is effective is if your group sponsors an activity that people really want to take part in. I belong to the largest rod and custom group in Nebraska even though I don’t own a hot rod. They sponsor a weekend driving event of about 500 miles, which is in essence a highway speed parade with 5 car shows in small towns at stops along the way. People line the highways in rural areas just to see the vintage cars and trucks go by. They’ll bring out their lawn chairs and sit in the back of their pickup boxes just to see us. This has become so popular they are limited on the number of towns that have enough lodging and eating facilities to host us. They have started having to limit the registrations to around 400 vehicles. The participants, myself included, like to see the various locations around the state, giving the public a free car show and providing a special event to small towns for their citizens to enjoy. Registration for the tour starts on January 1 each year. The tour isn’t until the first weekend in June. This year it filled up in 6 days with more than 200 registrants before 10 a.m. on New Year’s Day. Registration is inexpensive by today’s standards, and you do not need to purchase a lunch ticket until you pick up your registration. Thus, if you have to cancel you are not out a large amount of money. This is a perfect example of people wanting to do the activity, so they join the group.
Cars and Coffee events can be a place to find new members, too. Most of them I’ve seen have no requirements to join to show your car, so you’ll find a lot of ‘closet collectors’ who might be interested in your club if they knew about it. And the Cars and Coffee shows are usually held for only a few hours as to not take up a whole day for those of us with busy lives.
Be creative when thinking of ways to recruit new members. There is no set way of doing it. To me, the biggest thing is to show people you genuinely care about them and their interests.

Youth Development Corner:
Hornets Nest Region’s Successful Youth Program
By Greg Jackson, President Hornets Nest Region &
|
|
Over a decade ago, the Hornets Nest Region faced the ever-present challenge of how to involve youth in the antique car hobby. Youth Development Committee Chair Mike Munao had a new idea to put our members’ automotive knowledge to use and share it with young people. Having previous involvement with scouting, the committee began reaching out to local Boy Scout troops. “We need people to lead and teach our Automotive Maintenance Merit Badge workshops” was the response we received. We put this plan into action, and at the Fall Charlotte AutoFair in 2009, a group of five region members led a group of 20 scouts for our first ever workshop.
In the years since, the Youth Development program has expanded dramatically. Each Charlotte AutoFair we pre-register anywhere between 25-75 young people, and we have expanded it to other organizations such as the Girl Scouts, and Trail Life. We do not require membership in any organization to be a part of the program; a signed “Certificate of Completion” is awarded to participants who are not part of a youth organization.
|
|
At the beginning of the session, we discuss general respect of vehicles, as well as shop safety. We have a “touch table” where students are allowed to pick up and examine a piston, valve, carburetor, fuel injector, spark plug, distributor cap and plug wires, new and used air filters, oil filters, used belts, and an entire brake assembly. We also have a cutaway model of a small 4-stroke engine. We have a display of region member vehicles, diverse in age from the 1930s through modern era to compare and contrast the differences over the decades. We teach them how to check oil and tire pressure, how to read symbols and dash warning lights, as well as the “why” behind all of these items.
The Hornets Nest Region is proud of the program we have organically grown to serve the young people of our community and look forward to the continued growth of the program. If your region has questions or would like advice on putting together a similar program in your area, feel free to contact me.

Eastern Divisional Tour Overview
|
The AACA Library staff want to thank once more everyone who participated in and helped with the 2023 Eastern Divisional Tour in Denver, PA, last month. The tour was in memory of late director, Chris Ritter, and included 48 registered vehicles and drivers, with an additional 50 passengers. The staff thanks Chairman Chuck Gibson, Liaison Director Don Barlup, region volunteers, Dan Reed, the Ritter family, and AACA headquarters staff for helping make this event an enjoyable week for everyone, and a tribute worthy of Chris’s memory. Library staff joined the tour activities throughout the week and included here are their reflections…
As many of you know, coming into this job I was not much of a “car person” yet. Despite this, I’ve been taking various opportunities to throw myself into the hobby by attending my first AACA Convention in Williamsburg, my first car show in Gettysburg, my first region involvement with the Hershey Region, and now my first touring event. At the tour, as with every other event, I immediately got caught up in the excitement of, yes the cars, but also visiting with friends and meeting new people.
I’ve reached the point now where I have seen many of you at several events and can recognize faces and names…and every time I do, it fills my heart to exchange a “so great to see you again!”, a hug, and an update on how we’re doing since the last time we saw each other. This hobby really is about the people, and the tour was a fantastic way to spend more time with you – I thoroughly enjoyed myself and can’t wait for the next chance to see my new friends again.
I was lucky enough to be at the tour on 3 days. Registration day was a chance to see everyone upon arrival, catch up on all the news, and get caught up in the excitement of what was to come. Tuesday was my touring day spent with Don Barlup as he regaled me with stories of his life while we traveled from a covered bridge to the Watch & Clock Museum to the organ concert. Wednesday, we welcomed the group to our home here at headquarters, where I unfortunately almost blew everyone’s eardrums out with microphone feedback before delivering a short speech introducing the dedication of Dan Reed’s painting to Chris Ritter’s memory. At the end of the day, this tour was indeed about Chris, and I’m so grateful to have been a part of it. I attended both the opening and closing dinners, which were not only delicious (except what were those red syrupy beet things??) but another opportunity to visit and enjoy each other’s company. All in all, it was a wonderful experience, and while the first, it will hopefully not be the last tour experience I’ll have with AACA.

|
Although I’ve been with AACA for more than 10 years, this was my first experience with an AACA touring event. I had no idea what to expect on Sunday’s leg of the tour but was excited for all the stops along the way, especially because I had never been to any of them before! In particular, I was blown away by the Boyertown Museum of Transportation’s phenomenal collection of vehicles both built in and with special connections to Pennsylvania; the replica Back to the Future DeLorean in the lobby also tugged on my nostalgic heartstrings. Finishing the day off at the Carousel at Pottstown was a nice touch, and I even took I ride (on a goat of all things) even though I convinced myself I would not. The only disappointment I experienced there was seeing all the fun and unique vintage pinball tables and lamenting my lack of loose change!
While sightseeing is fun, the experience would not have been half as memorable without a great group of people to share the day. I was continually impressed by the warmth and friendliness of everyone involved, including Don Barlup who drove me around in his Pontiac. Over the years, Don has joked about still having a “flip phone” and, acting as navigator, I was initially terrified of getting us lost. We took a few wrong turns in the beginning but hit our stride by the end of the day, combining the yin and yang of our flip phone and smartphone powers.
Wednesday was the proverbial “cherry on top” in terms of being able to share the library with the tour group AND the unveiling of Dan Reed’s painting of Chris. Chris’ family being there made the day even more special, and I was floored when Chris’ wife Tam sent me the message they were on their way in Chris’ Buick and Olds. Moments like these served as a reminder of the importance in seeing through the tour that Chris started planning last year. Though bittersweet without his presence, he was always there in spirit.
I'm grateful that I finally had a chance to experience an antique car tour. It was a lot of fun, and now I know why AACA members enjoy them so much. It's both a social event and a learning experience, as well as an excellent opportunity to drive or ride in an antique vehicle. I was able to attend both banquets, toured on Monday, and helped lead the experience at headquarters on Wednesday.
As a member of the library staff, attending the tour provided context and a better understanding of our members and their research needs. Many thanks to those who brought Chris Ritter's idea to fruition and provided continuity from one Directorship to another.
