Hershey Region AACA, fallmeet@hersheyaaca.org
| | |
With a show as big as Hershey, there are a lot of moving parts for our Hershey region volunteers to coordinate. Please help us by reviewing this important information:
1. On the Show Car/Special Events registration card that you request from National Headquarters you can also choose to receive awards banquet tickets and/or antique car trailer parking reservations.
2. SHOW CAR REGISTRATION ONLY: You may register online here right now. You can pay for your show car registration online with a credit card OR you can print the registration form and submit it along with your check to: Jill Bower, Hershey Region AACA Show Car Chairman, 1015 Kunkles Mill Rd, Lewisberry, PA 17339.
3. There is a $20 parking fee for show car trailers parking on Boathouse Road. The fee covers the period of Tuesday, October 7, at 7 a.m. through Saturday, October 11, at 12 p.m. All vehicles must be removed by 12 p.m. Saturday or they will be towed per order of Derry Township Police.
4. You must return the completed registration card and check to Hershey Region. There will be a pre-addressed envelope enclosed in the packet that you request from National Headquarters. PLEASE read all of the information that accompanies your registration card(s).
5. Cards/checks not signed will be returned for signatures and could jeopardize your request for space(s).
6. If you have a special location request, you should send a note along with your flea market or car corral registration card. Spaces are assigned by the postmark on the envelope. You can ask for your check to be returned in the event we cannot fulfill your request. If you will accept spaces anywhere, you need not send any note. (NOTES written on registration cards will not be honored and you will be assigned at the discretion of the field chairman.)
7. Please read ALL accompanying information that will be enclosed with the registration card(s) you receive from National Headquarters. Your signature on the card confirms you have read, understand and will obey AACA and Hershey Region rules and regulations.
8. Please pay close attention to the firm postmark deadline of August 15 on the registration card. We need ample time to make assignments, enter the data and send the information to our printer. There is a very short lead time to accomplish this task.
9. TO RESERVE & RENT A SCOOTER OR GOLF CART: ScooterBug has been contracted for the 2025 Hershey show to provide pre-reserved, single passenger ECVs and double occupant golf carts for those guests who have a valid, state-issued driver's license & handicapped placard in the state in which you reside. Guests can pre-reserve this mobility equipment online at www.scooterbug.com/aaca (preferred) or call 800-726-8284 directly to reserve. There are NO refunds under any circumstances once the payment is received and equipment is reserved. (NOTE: Personal mobility vehicles are not registered by ScooterBug personnel.)
10. YES, YOU CAN BRING YOUR OWN SCOOTER: Personal electric mobility vehicles are authorized; however, they must be registered at one of the three registration areas. More information will be available in the literature you receive with your registration card.
11. Flea market and car corral windshield stickers and other important information will be mailed at the end of August.
12. SALES TAX LICENSE: If you do not have a sales tax license, you can apply online at mypath.pa.gov or call 717-783-1405. Do not use the old pa100 website as it has been discontinued. If you need more information, visit our website at hershey.aaca.com. IMPORTANT: DO NOT wait for your tax license number to arrive. Hershey Eastern Fall Nationals Volunteers Needed!!!
| | |
As you know, an event as big as Fall Hershey does not happen without a lot of help from our community! Putting on the Yard Sale every year, and keeping the library open for research, is not possible without the volunteers who step up to work at the library during the week. Please consider giving your time in one of the following ways so that we can continue to offer the services and events you have come to love during Hershey!
Library Welcome Duty
(Monday, October 6 – Thursday, October 9):
Refer to our schedule for available shifts.
Library Yard Sale (Tuesday, October 7):
Volunteer opportunities will include working registration, monitoring the sales tents, helping customers, etc. We also need help with the moving and setup of literature earlier in the day.
Yard Sale Preparation (July-October):
Lastly, we will need help sorting literature and manuals in the months leading up to the event and will be ramping up this process over the summer. With so much to do, we can use all the help we can get!
For more information, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Matthew Hocker by email or phone – 717-534-2082.

Have You Ever Wanted to Stay at the Hershey Lodge
During Hershey Week in October?
| | Last year, in conjunction with RM Sotheby’s, we were able to obtain a discounted rate at the Hershey Lodge during the Eastern Fall Nationals which most simply refer to as “Hershey.” Thanks to AACA members who took advantage of this deal, we were able to sell out the entire block of 900 room nights. Selling out this room block is the best way we can ensure that the auction remains a part of our event. The auction is back in 2025 and we already have the block set up to take reservations. Please consider making your reservation now clicking here. This year’s rate is $299 a night. Thank you all for your support last year! | | |

| | Congratulations to Our 2025 Zenith Winner! | |
AACA has selected a 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge as its 2025 Zenith Award winner. The Zenith Award is the ultimate recognition bestowed by AACA for outstanding and critically authentic automotive restoration. The 18 already award-winning antiques that competed for this year’s Zenith Award, held just this past weekend at the 2025 AACA Grand Nationals in Dayton, Ohio, were selected from each of the AACA National shows in 2024.
“Authenticity is of critical concern when it comes to the annual Zenith Award recognition, as is craftsmanship and exacting attention to detail,” according to Tom Cox, former AACA President and the founder of the Zenith Award program.
| | |
The 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge is owned by Debra and Gil Powell of Denver, North Carolina. Congratulations also goes to the runner-up, a 1938 Packard Twelve 1608 owned by Bob and Judy Tiffin of Red Bay, Alabama. Membership Corner: Joining the Club
By Jeff Oaks, AACA National VP Membership, tjoaks59@gmail.com
| | |
I hope that everyone is enjoying the summer and has been able to travel and have fun with family and friends. We have had fun with the grandkids, and I have found time for automotive projects in the garage among other things. I was able to attend the Eastern Spring Nationals in Beckley, West Virginia, and just returned from the Grand Nationals in Dayton, Ohio, which included the Zenith Awards. I had a great time at both Beckley and Dayton. This was a first time visit for me to the Air Force Museum and the Packard Museum and I enjoyed both. Above all were the outstanding antique vehicles that attended the events!
Our 2025 National Membership Committee has made a committed effort to have our AACA Membership Tent present at the shows this year. We have found that our best member recruitment results have been on the show field, the day of the show. Word gets out about all of the antique cars that will be on display and attendance is high. We have had a steady stream of folks asking about the club, its activities, and events. Surprisingly, many have an old car at home that has been passed down, or they picked it up somewhere and would like to join the fun. We mention that the cars do not have to be show cars to participate, and you do not even have to own a car to be a part of the club! We point out that it is easy to join by just filling out a membership form and that right now it’s only $25 to join through years end. One guy said he spent more than that for lunch! It’s a deal… We also have some extra issues of Antique Automobile magazine on the table to show people what we are all about. Shows, tours, restorations, articles, ads, and more! We always give out our web address, www.aaca.org. They can search out more there later and even join online.
For our local chapters and regions, you can be successful too by promoting membership at your local shows and events. Take notes from some of the ideas we have had at National. Some of our greatest successes in recruiting new members are from our local clubs. List some of the highlighted events that you participate in locally and get them interested in joining. Also, don’t forget the four complimentary memberships that are sent to each chapter and region annually. Ask your President about them and don’t let them go to waste. All of us have a friend or relative that would like to be a part of this antique auto experience. We are the oldest and largest antique automobile club in the world, and we need your help to hang on to that title!
See you on the road soon!

Black Swan Antiquities: the AACA Library’s Off-Site Sales Location
By Jen Wolfe, AACA Library Director, jwolfe@aaca.org
| | |
The AACA Library utilizes several ways to generate income throughout the year – most are well-known to our members: the book sale at the Annual Convention, the Yard Sale during Hershey Fall Nationals, and the gift shop at the National headquarters building, are all places you’ve likely bought duplicate literature, books, models and toys, and library merchandise. But unless you’re a local, you might not know about our booth at Black Swan Antiquities in nearby Palmyra.
A mere 6 miles down the road is a 20,000 square foot antique mall beloved by locals, that features about 60 vendors, including the AACA Library. Not only does having a booth here allow us to sell duplicate material year-round, but it also serves as a venue to access a different customer base. Black Swan attracts a variety of antique and thrift shopping fans in the area, many of which are not in the old car hobby, but still enjoy the inventory we stock.
In the past, librarian Matt Hocker served as curator and caretaker of our booth, and more recently he has handed the reins to Amoi Goldman, who has been giving it her own spin this past year by changing up the shelving units and testing new items in the booth. Amoi visits our booth twice a month to restock and take note of what is selling and what isn’t. Because of the frequency of her visits, we are able to rotate inventory based on what items might be of interest that month. Chrysler show going on in Carlisle? Let’s add some Mopar literature and books. Summer tourist season? Add in some toys and models, and some old maps (all of which sell remarkably well!). Books tend to be popular all year round, especially coffee table books, and memorabilia does well here also.
With our Black Swan booth, there’s no need to wait for an event to come around in order to support the library – it’s only a short drive away! So, the next time you’re in the area to visit us, be sure to save a little time to swing by the antique mall…it’s well worth the stop!
Black Swan Antiquities – Open 7 days a week, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Located at 61 West Front Street, Palmyra, PA 17078.

Member Story: Beginning and End of the Parisienne
By Mark Kubancik, Louisville, KY, mark.kubancik@gmail.com
This is a member submitted article.
| | |
At this year’s AACA Central Spring Nationals in Auburn, IN, I showed my 1986 Pontiac Parisienne in AACA’s Original class (formerly HPOF), vying for a repeat Senior Original award. Also showing in the AACA Original class was a beautiful two-tone green 1958 Pontiac Parisienne, it too vying for a repeat Senior Original award. I took the opportunity to park next to the ’58 and capture a couple photos of the first and last years of the Parisienne model name.
For many years in mid-twentieth century times, Pontiacs assembled in Canada used some Canadian-sourced Chevrolet components to avoid duties and tariffs (sound familiar today?). Since they were unique to the Canadian marketplace, they often carried model names that had relevance to our neighbor to the north.
The ’58 Pontiacs were no exception, as the bodies from the U.S. were mated to Chevrolet chassis in Canada, complete with Chevrolet engines. When Pontiac offered both convertible and two-door hardtop models of the Bonneville in the U.S. for 1958, Canada followed suit, offering two-door hardtop and convertible models named Parisienne. This was apparently a nod to the French speaking province of Quebec.
Mounting to the Chevrolet chassis in ’58 created a small problem. The Chevrolet Impala chassis had a slightly shorter wheelbase than the Pontiac Bonneville, so the front fenders and other unseen body panels had to be shortened. Thus, standard ’58 senior series Pontiac front fenders will not fit the Parisienne. More differences are found under the hood, where on this particular ’58 Parisienne one finds a 348 cubic inch four-barrel Chevrolet V-8.
Stark differences were really evident beginning in 1959 when the “wide track” 1959 bodies were placed on the standard track Chevrolet chassis. To say the early wide track years Canadian Pontiacs resemble a football lineman wearing ballet slippers is appropriate.
Like the Bonneville name, the Parisienne model name continued to be used through 1986, albeit on less exclusive cars than the luxurious ’58s. Interestingly, my ’86 Parisienne, and all the Parisienne’s sold in the U.S. from 1983 to 1986, were also mated to Chevrolet chassis. The major difference is that once the Parisienne had some sales success in the U.S., production was shifted to U.S. factories that were already producing the Chevrolet Caprice. My ’86 Parisienne was built in Kansas City with an Olds 307 engine. By this time, GM was using engines from a variety of manufacturers and was publicizing that fact, having been dragged into a class-action lawsuit in the late ’70s after some Oldsmobile buyers realized they got Chevy 350 engines instead of Olds 350s.
| | |
Another interesting point noted at the Auburn show…there was a stunning pink and white ’58 Bonneville hardtop vying for its First Junior in class judging (which it won handily). I got a closer look at the car during a Friday evening July 4 cruise-in in downtown Auburn. Per the car’s owner, the pink Bonneville has every available option EXCEPT for the dealer-installed continental kit (if it had a continental kit, it would not fit in their garage!). The green ’58 Parisienne? It does have the dealer-installed continental kit!
I know some in the car hobby turn up their noses at the Parisienne, regardless of the year. After all, it’s a Frankenstein of sorts with Pontiac bodies covering a Chevrolet chassis. Especially the later models in the ’80s, which are still scornfully referred to as Cheviacs, or more appropriately for my Olds powered example, a Cheviacmobile. That being the case, I felt somewhat vindicated when listening to former Pontiac dealer Jerry Dobson of Munfordville, KY, speak at the Louisville POCI convention. He spoke in glowing terms about the ’83-’86 Parisienne, seeing it as a salvation to again be back in the big car business after Pontiac unceremoniously cancelled the big B-body car for 1982. He recalled that the first 1983 Parisienne delivered to their small dealership sold within four hours. The dealers cared about selling cars, and the Parisienne got them back in the big car marketplace.

Great Smoky Mountains Region Celebrates
National Collector Car Appreciation Day
By Jane Opliger, President, Great Smoky Mountains Region,
Hendersonville, NC, tjhotrodpt@aol.com
This is a member submitted article.
| | |
This was our second year hosting an event to celebrate National Collector Car Appreciation Day. We had a good turnout in spite of the rain and the fact that our Department of Transportation decided to do road repairs that day!!
We chose to host a free car show and invited everyone and anyone to participate. The show took place on July 11, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lured Market & Grill in Lake Lure, NC.
While the lake is still being restored from Hurricane Helene last year and many of the businesses are still closed, we chose the location for several reasons: (1) it is a short drive from our region and the other chapters and regions participating in the event, (2) it was a large enough space making it an easy decision to open up the event to anyone who wanted to attend, (3) lots of potential new members would be able to attend allowing us to have a membership drive during the event, (4) we were able to have our very own Michael Block and Jeff Hodge present to discuss their accomplishments in their rookie year as participants in the Great Race, (5) Lured Market & Grill has been the first point of contact since Helene for first responders, so any donations received could be distributed to local residents as part of the ongoing relief efforts, and (6) the event brought people from all around in to support this local business and help them to continue their efforts while the area is still trying to recover from this natural disaster.
We had members from Great Smoky Mountains Region, Little Detroit Chapter, and South Carolina Region chapters attend the event. We also had other local car clubs join us including the Transylvania Cruisers and the Carolina Mountain Car Club. Lots of local residents, family, friends, and some prospective new members were in attendance as well. We are already reviewing what we can do next year to improve attendance.

Redwood Empire Region Commemorates 49th Anniversary in Cazadero
By David Chiotti, Santa Rosa, CA, dechiotti@aol.com
This is a member submitted article.
| | |
In June of 1976, the Redwood Empire Region received its Charter from AACA.
In celebration of our 49th year, our monthly tour (yes, monthly except for December) took us through the back roads of Sonoma County, California, ending up in the town of Cazadero. Cazadero has a long history, from hunting retreat to a logging camp with a population of 354. The last train pulled out of Cazadero, California, on July 31, 1933. This event marked the end of passenger service on the Northwestern Pacific Railroad line to Cazadero. A mock funeral was held for the train's departure.
“Downtown” Cazadero has a General Store: an historic store with a long-standing reputation for providing daily necessities and local products. There is also a U.S. Post Office, Cazadero Supply (hardware and auto parts), St. Colman Catholic Church, Cazadero Community Church, Cazadero Fire Department, the train depot, and the restoration shop/museum of Willys America (known worldwide to Willys people).
Willys America is owned by club members Paul and Jane Barry. Both are very much involved with the Russian River Historical Society (of which Jane is President). RRHS is preserving the history of the Cazadero area. Our catered lunch was held behind the Cazadero Train Depot. The buildings were built by RRHS Vice President John Schubert who was a railroad buff. Before he died, he donated them to the Cazadero Community Services District. Our meal was arranged by club members Hans and Pamela Enz and prepared by Michael Enz and business partner Shovanny. After lunch, Paul gave an extensive tour of the Willys America facilities with a live demonstration of the working of a 1927 Mack 35’ Gorter Water Tower.

ATTENTION: Regions & Chapters
$5,000 Grants Available to Regions Hosting National Shows & Tours
That Have NOT Hosted for Over Ten Years
| |
The AACA National Board of Directors realizes that the financial risk involved with hosting a national show or tour has caused many regions and chapters to be hesitant to volunteer to host a national event. Some regions simply do not have the funds available to even think about hosting.
At the National Board Meeting in Hershey, PA, the board approved a $5,000 grant for any region receiving board approval to host a national event that has not hosted one for more than ten years.
There are many opportunities to host one of these events. We have Winter Nationals available and will schedule up to three years in advance. Spring and Fall National shows are available to schedule for Eastern, Southeastern, Central and Western Divisions, also up to 3 years in advance.
Touring events share the same opportunities. Founders Tour, Sentimental Tour, Vintage Tour, Reliability Tour, Glidden Tour and all four Divisional Tours have available openings for your region to reserve for up to three years in advance.
For more information, please contact Greg Jackson, VP National Activities, at greg.jackson15@outlook.com or 704-408-6217.
Don’t miss this opportunity to host a national event. Take advantage of this special grant program while the National Board has this offer available!
| | Is YOUR Region/Chapter Prepared to Recruit New Members? | |
When your region or chapter holds a local car show, that is your best opportunity to recruit new members. The people attending your show are there because they already have an interest in antique cars. If your event is open to non-members, those who have registered and are showing their cars are already willing to participate. These are the folks you should be engaging about how much you enjoy being an AACA member and that they should think about joining.
Now, don’t be caught empty-handed at this point! Make sure your region/chapter has something to hand out to potential new members. When you are planning your event, be sure to reach out to National Headquarters to get a supply of materials to help you.

General Motors initiated an Assembly Line Diagnostic Link in 1980 to support its manufacturing process. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) then recommended a universal connector and diagnostic protocol in 1988. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) mandated basic On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) I in 1991, which was followed by a more comprehensive OBD II system for 1996.
When scanned, the first digit identifies where the fault lies: B = Body (including a/c and air bags), C = Chassis (including ABS), P = Powertrain, U = User Network (wiring). The second numeral signifies it’s a Generic (0) of Manufacturer Specific (1) Code. The third digit defines the system at fault: 1 = Fuel/Air Metering, 2 = Injector Circuit, 3 = Ignition or Misfire, 4 = Auxiliary Emission Controls, 5 = Speed and Idle Control, 6 = Computer Output Control, 7-9 = Transmission, A-C = Hybrid system. The fourth and fifth numerals identify the specific fault.
