Recently Uncovered Historical Item
How about this for a piece of amazing AACA history… This is the club’s very first stationary. The letter is signed by AACA’s first Vice President, Earle S. Eckel, and was sent to Mr. W. E. Swigart in 1946. At that time, it only cost 3 cents to mail a letter.

Many thanks to Don Barlup for unearthing it and to Pat Swigart for donating it. We are thrilled to have it! It will have a place of honor in our history room, so next time you visit National Headquarters make sure to check it out.

AACA Library Updates
By Jen Wolfe, AACA Library Director, jwolfe@aaca.org

New Library Website Coming Soon!

The AACA Library & Research Center is thrilled to be working with web developers to redesign the library’s website. While each version of our website over the years has been an improvement over the last, it is time once again to make changes that will improve the experience of our users.

The new design promises a more streamlined and user-friendly layout, more intuitive navigation to find the information you’re looking for, and a fresh and modern look that mirrors the AACA’s new website while also representing the library as the world-class institution that it is. We’re so grateful to have the opportunity to implement the redesign this year, and we thank the AACA Board of Directors for their support of the project.

The new library website will be live later this summer, and our current website remains operational until then. We look forward to interacting with you in our new digital space very soon!

Always Obsessed with Cars
By Phil LoGiudice, Sebastian, FL, philguilford@gmail.com
This is a member submitted story in response to the
“Do You Remember Your First Car Show?” article from last month’s Speedster.
I was born and grew up in San Francisco. When I was in grade school, 1950s, my dad took me to the annual new car show in downtown San Francisco. I was really young but was always obsessed with cars and could identify most of the makes on the road at the time. Luckily, they were all American cars and of course they all looked different.

My overall memory of the show was this incredible feeling of being around so many beautiful cars. I do not remember any particular model. However, I do remember one thing clearly… Spike Jones and his band provided the entertainment. We loved his antics. He was quite funny. He had an electric collection of items that he played as instruments. I am sure I am in the minority when I say I saw Spike Jones live!
Please scroll all the way to the end of Speedster to find the answer.

A Little Bit About Our Tour Mascot: Meet Dana’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
By Mary Gates, Western Divisional Tour, marymarlene.gates@gmail.com
This is a member submitted story.
Over a lifetime of what some might refer to as an automotive enthusiast on steroids, our very own Dana Newquist is the proud owner of a 1926 Locomobile, lovingly known around Santa Barbara as Dana’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

As the owner of more than 100 cars that fit the AACA mold over the years, Chitty is far from Dana’s first antique ride. Most would agree though that she undoubtedly ranks high on his favorites list. She does have to share his affections with his anywhere from 15 to 20 other mostly rare model cars, including his 1937 Ford fire truck, a lovely 1928 Pierce Arrow (first owned by Louis B. Mayer of MGM, a very rare 1917 Templar Roadster, and another rarity, a 1917 Chalmers Roadster.

Like any car about to celebrate its centennial, Chitty’s had many lives. Fortunately, Dana has been able to trace her significant transitions and events that led her to his garage.

Chitty’s journey began in Los Angeles as a 1926 Locomobile Roadster. She was purchased from the LA-based Ralph Hamlin dealership by a Santa Barbara gentlemen and was quite an attraction in her new coastal home. To her owner’s misfortune, in 1929 the Locomobile Company of America (founded in 1899) ceased operations making parts virtually impossible to source.

In 1930, unable to keep her running, Chitty’s owner generously donated her to the local Junior High School auto shop where she became a hands-on learning project for the students. Over the years, her body was removed, her driveshaft disconnected, and her chassis was used to teach mechanical functions such as clutch and gear shifting. By 1949, even her engine had been disassembled.

More than two decades later, in 1952, another Santa Barbara resident, Robert Dowlin, traded the school several modern engines for ownership of Chitty’s scattered parts and pieces. She was partially reconstructed, but subsequently stored outside, unprotected from Santa Barbara’s coastal climate.
Another two decades later, Chitty’s remarkable restoration journey began when a local mechanical engineer by the name of Bill Swanson became inspired by Ian Fleming's book and dreamed of owning his own Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. In 1974, Swanson found and purchased Chitty for a mere $150. Over the next two decades, he painstakingly sourced and assembled every component, including her 1926 body which he hand-fabricated to replicate Locomobile #16, that found fame winning the prestigious Vanderbilt Cup.
On the momentous day of May 5, 1993, Chitty, the resilient vintage beauty, was, again, officially registered as a 1926 Locomobile Roadster. Meticulous records kept by Swanson from the date of his purchase thru the completion of Chitty detail her complete build record.

A close friend of Swanson, Dana acquired Chitty in 2008 and has lovingly made her part of his family and daily life. She routinely graces local parades, visits retirement homes, and has also become one of Dana’s daily around-town drivers. For those who haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting Dana, he’s President of the Santa Barbara Region AACA, and currently heading up the 2023 AACA Western Divisional Tour.

If you’re not yet on our registration list, sign up today and come meet Dana, Chitty, and the rest of the gang at the 2023 Western Divisional Tour – September 25-29, 2023! We all look forward to seeing you there!

Important Hershey Information
By "Mac" MacAdam, Flea Market/Car Corral Registration Chairman,
Hershey Region AACA, fallmeet@hersheyaaca.org
Summer registration is almost upon us for the Hershey flea market, car corral and show vehicles. To acquire space(s), you must request a registration card from AACA National Headquarters by using the Activity Card enclosed in the plastic covering of the Antique Automobile magazine (May/June issue). All requested registration materials will be mailed to you by the AACA staff after July 1. If you have misplaced the Activity Card or the Hershey information was erroneously omitted on the Activity Card you received, you should call AACA Headquarters at 717-534-1910.

With a show as big as Hershey, there are a lot of moving parts for our region volunteers to coordinate. Please help us by reviewing this important information:

1. On the Show Car/Special Events registration card that you request from National Headquarters you can also choose to receive awards banquet tickets, antique car trailer parking reservations and juniors at Hershey information. (The ladies’ luncheon has been discontinued.)
2. SHOW CAR REGISTRATION ONLY: You may also register online here right now. You must print the registration form and submit it along with your check to Rich Spina, Hershey Region AACA Show Car Chairman, 1313 W. Market Street, Pottsville, PA 17901.
3. There is a $20 parking fee for show car trailers parking on Boathouse Road. The fee covers the period of Tuesday, October 3, at 7 a.m. through Saturday, October 7, at 12 p.m. All vehicles must be removed by 12 p.m. Saturday or they will be towed per order of Derry Township Police.
4. You must return the completed registration card and check to Hershey Region. There will be a pre-addressed envelope enclosed in the packet that you request from National Headquarters. PLEASE read all of the information that accompanies your registration card(s).
5. Cards/checks not signed will be returned for signatures and could jeopardize your request for space(s).
6. If you have a special location request, you should send a note along with your flea market or car corral registration card. Spaces are assigned by the postmark on the envelope. You can ask for your check to be returned in the event we cannot fulfill your request. If you will accept spaces anywhere, you need not send any note. (NOTES written on registration cards will not be honored and you will be assigned at the discretion of the field chairman.)
7. Please read ALL accompanying information that will be enclosed with the registration card(s) you receive from National Headquarters. Your signature on the card confirms you have read, understand and will obey AACA and Hershey Region rules and regulations.
8. Please pay close attention to the firm postmark deadline of August 15 on the registration card. We need ample time to make assignments, enter the data and send the information to our printer. There is a very short lead time to accomplish this task.
9. TO RESERVE & RENT A SCOOTER OR GOLF CART: ScooterBug has been contracted for the 2023 Hershey show to provide pre-reserved, single passenger ECVs and double occupant golf carts for those guests who have a valid, state-issued driver's license & handicapped placard in the state in which you reside. Guests can pre-reserve this mobility equipment online at http://www.scooterbug.com/aaca (preferred) or call 800-726-8284 directly to reserve.  There are NO refunds under any circumstances once the payment is received and equipment is reserved. (NOTE: Personal mobility vehicles are not registered by ScooterBug personnel.)
10. YES, YOU CAN BRING YOUR OWN SCOOTER: Personal electric mobility vehicles are authorized; however, they must be registered at one of the three registration areas. More information will be available in the literature you receive with your registration card.
11. Flea market and car corral windshield stickers and other important information will be mailed at the end of August.
12. SALES TAX LICENSE: If you do not have a sales tax license, you can apply online at https://mypath.pa.gov or call 717-783-1405. Do not use the old pa100 website as it has been discontinued. If you need more information, visit our website at hershey.aaca.com. IMPORTANT: DO NOT wait for your tax license number to arrive. Send your flea market registration card and check to the Hershey Region and simply write "applied for" above the Tax ID space on the registration card.

Membership Corner: It Began in My Hometown!
By Jeff Oaks, AACA National VP & Membership Committee Member, joaks@ec.rr.com
While growing up, my dad was always running across an old car that was sitting in a friend’s garage that had not been driven in a while. He would bring it home and we would get it roadable again. Eventually he would sell it and find another. It was fun for me, and I learned a lot about older cars. I did not think much about it at the time, but this was introducing me to one of the greatest hobbies of my lifetime.
Years later, my sons were getting to be about that age, so we bought a nice original ‘37 Chevrolet Sport Sedan. We had a lot of fun with it and all of their friends liked it, too. I had found out about a local antique auto club and attended their meeting. It was the local chapter of the AACA. I knew nothing about the AACA at the time, but they seemed to do all of the fun things with their cars. I could tell this was for me and so I signed up that night. The next thing I knew the old Chevy was in car shows, parades, displays like inside the mall on Father’s Day, cookouts, more parades, and it goes on. We had a blast with the car and the club. I remember thinking, why was I not in this club 20 years ago? I made many new friends and heard many stories of adventures on the road. I broadened my horizons and started traveling with them to other events in the state.
Then I was introduced to AACA touring. This was a completely new thing to us – driving your car with about 100 others for 3-5 days at a time and taking in all of the sights and sounds. Sometimes I was a bit anxious just hoping that the car would make it to the next stop. However, some of the best old car mechanics around were on the tour, so I figured it would be all right. What a great time!

As the fun grew, so did the cars. One car to mention is a barn find 1936 Packard 120 Touring Sedan that needed a new home. We had fun bringing it back to life and years later, it was the getaway car in both my sons’ weddings! Who would have thought that would have happened?

Looking back, I am thankful for all of the hard work and effort that was and is given by the members of the local chapters and regions. This is the backbone and grassroots of the AACA. Their encouragement has kept me as a devoted member for nearly 30 years. We as chapter or regional members need to understand the importance of being active on the local level and keeping the interest of our members and our hobby! Invite someone that you meet at an event to join you and let them in on the fun! That is what keeps our membership strong!

Youth Development Corner: Driving the Future with Great Race X-Cup
By Jeff Stumb, Director of Great Race, and AACA Youth Development
Committee member, jeff@greatrace.com
Today’s young people may have grown up with technology at their fingertips, but there are still those who are drawn to the world of classic cars. A major goal for AACA is membership, and the Youth Development Committee is working on innovative ways to engage young people with broader involvement in collector cars. For a fortunate group of high school and college students from across the country, the 2023 Great Race X-Cup Division offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the thrill of a cross-country time/speed/distance rally for vehicles 1974 and older.
This year's route takes the X-Cup teams from St. Augustine, FL, all the way to Colorado Springs, CO, covering over 2,400 miles of scenic roads and historic highways. Seven student teams will participate in the 9-day competition! Along the way, these young competitors will face a variety of challenges and obstacles, testing their skills and determination to make it to the finish line.

X-Cup isn't just about the competition – it's also about the camaraderie, teamwork, and spirit of the classic car community. The student teams will be joined by more than 100 adult entries. Together, they'll share in the joy of maintaining and driving these vintage vehicles, and they'll create memories that will last a lifetime.

The RPM Foundation is proud to continue the AACA’s tradition of administering the X-Cup Student Division. Their involvement includes fundraising, disbursement of grants to assist student teams with the expenses of the race, and awarding scholarships to eligible student participants. The Team Choice Award is awarded to the organization hosting the student team that most exemplifies the spirit of X-Cup.
You can now follow the X-Cup teams in real time, as the students post daily updates on their adventures during Great Race! Social media posts tagged #XCUP23 will all be presented in this one location.

Join in the excitement of these young people as they make their way across America during a "bucket-list" experience, driving the classic cars we all love!

The SEMA Action Network (SAN) announced that this year’s Collector Car Appreciation Day (CCAD) will be officially celebrated on July 14, 2023. The date marks the fourteenth consecutive commemoration in what is now an annual holiday to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.

Intended since 2010 to celebrate the classics of the past and the future, the U.S. Congress has helped launch CCAD by introducing resolutions each year at the SAN's request. Last year, the U.S. Senate passed Senate Resolution 690 (S. Res. 690) and a similar resolution was also introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives (H. Res. 1201). Each resolution was sponsored by co-chairs of the SEMA-supported Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports CaucusThese Congressional leaders have been strong advocates for the automotive hobby in Washington, D.C., and recognize the integral role collector cars have played in fostering our nation's appreciation for the automobile's unique historical place in our history.

The lists of events officially scheduled to commemorate America's time-tested love affair with the automobile are posted in the links below. Individuals, car clubs and business owners interested in publicizing in-person events or virtual gatherings (online event, livestream, digital gallery, etc.) may submit the details of their July celebration at no cost using this linkParticipating organizers are awarded a copy of the Congressional resolution for display at their registered event. For those unable to celebrate on the official date, the SAN encourages festivities to be scheduled throughout the month of July.

Help promote this special day: download and share this official flyer, post on social media using the hashtag #CCAD and tag the celebration's Facebook fan page (@CollectorCarAppreciationDayCCAD).

Registering Your Collector Car and Paying Your Taxes
By Stewart Howden, President, Classic Auto Mall, Inc., stewarth@classicautomall.com
This is a member submitted story.
Remember the old days when you bought a car with an open title and never bothered to register it, title it or pay the taxes? I remember seeing classics on their 5th or 6th owner and still titled in the original owner’s name from 40 years ago. Just throw an old plate on it and away you go. Well, my friends, those days are long gone.

In the modern world, an unregistered vehicle is a red flag to law enforcement and your insurance company. Also, the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) now has an ever-growing database of all cars registered in the United States. The other issue comes into play if you were to have an incident or accident and are not (by lawful records) the owner of the vehicle. Who is held responsible and more importantly…who pays?

You must by law have your new (classic) vehicle registered within a certain number of days based on the state you live in. Failure to do so could result in not only a large fine but all the other normal fees associated with registering your vehicle. If you sell a car to a friend, neighbor or even a stranger, it’s always a good idea to accompany the buyer to the local DMV (if they live in the same state as you) to make sure the title has been transferred to them. If you have an out-of-state buyer, then you will need to check with your DMV after a month or so to make sure that the car has been re-registered in their name. If not, you will need to follow up with them to make sure they get it done.

In this litigious society, we don’t need another reason for legal action(s). Make sure you get a signed bill of sale from the buyer so that you have a paper trail showing them as the responsible party. When purchasing a classic, make sure you set enough aside to cover the taxes and fees and maybe that new set of wheels for your (new to you) car!

Trivia Answer
The Model A Ford was introduced in 1903. It was a two-cylinder runabout and was Ford Motor Company’s first product…and was superseded by the Model C in 1904. The more recognized Model A appeared for 1928, of course, and was the second so-named Ford...following in the wake of the Model T. Sorry to try and trick you.
The Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, is the country's premier resource for the collectible vehicle community.
