Fun Toys Come in Small Packages
|
Earlier this month, the library received a generous and exciting donation that included 157 toy and model vehicles of all shapes and sizes. It was like Christmas morning for staff as we unwrapped each one, ooo’d and ahh’d over style, color, material and rarity, and entertained a revolving door of staff, volunteers and club members who’d heard about the donation and stopped by to see it for themselves. Nostalgia was thick in the air as we traded stories and memories of our own experiences with toy and model cars and discussed how and where to display each of our new acquisitions.
The production of the models we were given goes as far back as the 1930s, and includes diecast, tin, plastic and cast-iron pieces. One notable favorite is a rubber Ford model made at the 1935 America’s Exposition in San Diego at the Firestone exhibit. From what we can tell, the entire vehicle is made of rubber, save for the axles. The blue paint is chipped and worn, but it’s still quite a beauty. Dinky Toys, Hess Truck, Corgi Toys, Matchbox, Franklin Mint Precision Models, and Brooklin Models (among others) were all represented, along with several we were unable to identify.
|
The library will be keeping many of the models donated and will give the public an opportunity to purchase the rest from the gift shop at AACA National Headquarters and our booth at Black Swan Antiques in Palmyra, Pennsylvania.
We want to thank the family who made this incredible donation – we are enjoying the heck out of it! If you have a penchant for toy and model vehicles, remember that the library’s collection includes books and literature on automotive toys, and the next time you visit us be sure to check out not only the full-sizes vehicles on display in the building, but our newest tiny toy ones, too!

Library Research Fees Changing
|
The AACA Library is announcing modest changes to our fee schedule, effective July 1, 2023. Although we have kept our research service prices unchanged for over a decade, the time had come to reassess the current economy, the cost of equipment, products, and staff time, and that of maintaining our new facility. We take very seriously our responsibility to ensure that we are helping to support ourselves into the future so that the next generation may also benefit from the use of the library and its staff. Current prices will be used through June 30, and updated prices will be listed soon on our website. Thank you for your continued support!

What classic car model has outsold both the Volkswagen Beetle and the Model T Ford?

Grease
This is a member submitted story.
|
|
In March of this year, my youngest grandson, Jack, was acting in his high school’s musical, Grease. The school play director wanted to do some publicity photographs of the student cast prior to the play. So, needless to say, antique automobiles of the era came to mind. My son, who happens to be the Principal of Pennsville High School, said he could provide a couple of antique automobiles for publicity photos.
So, on the Monday prior to the first show, Matt McFarland and I brought two of our antique automobiles to the high school for photos. Matt drove our 1939 Buick Special Convertible and I drove our 1955 DeSoto. We waited until school was dismissed and carefully drove the cars onto the front of the high school’s main entrance.
|
|
The entire cast was all in full costume and ready for photos. The students were thrilled to see the automobiles, and many were very apprehensive about climbing into the cars, but my son assured the students that it was okay to get in the cars and pose for the photographs.
The photos of the cast were all over the high school auditorium lobby for folks to see prior to the play. The three productions of Grease, March 24th, 25th and 26th were sold out.
I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the Friday and Saturday performances. Of course, I could not attend the Sunday matinee performance since I was working at our 51st Annual Swap Meet at the Salem County Fairgrounds.
|
|
On Sunday, March 26th, the final matinee performance of Grease was performed. My son thought it would be good publicity for the play if our two cars were there again. So, he and my daughter-in-law Amy drove both cars back to the school once again to grace the school lawn. Luckily, it was a beautiful day. Needless to say, the cars did draw the attention of all who passed by the school. And again, this matinee was sold out.
Spectators loved seeing the cars and my grandson Jack made sure he got in the driver seat of the yellow ‘39 Buick, along with his grandmother and aunt. Greg Walker, who played the lead in the production, also loved posing in the 1955 DeSoto. Our friends Monica and Joan from Ocean City came up for the play and loved posing with the car.

Membership Corner: Open or Closed?
By Mark Kubancik, AACA National Membership Committee Member,
|
Open or closed? That question can have many meanings in the AACA community. The pre-war crowd may think about an open or closed car. Muscle car aficionados might be thinking about open or closed exhaust systems. The more mechanically inclined might be asking if an electrical circuit or a carburetor butterfly valve is open or closed. My question today, however, applies to your local AACA region or chapter.
Are your local meetings, events and activities open or closed? Do you use your gatherings as tools to attract and recruit new members? If your gatherings are always “members only,” don’t be surprised if one day you notice that your membership is on the decline. It’s no secret that our hobby is aging. I’m about to turn 66 years old and am still considered one of the “younger” guys in our club. So, what can be done to reverse this decline?
|
Consider opening some of your gatherings to non-members. For example, I’ve hosted a KYANA salvage yard tour every year for the past twelve (save for 2020). We visit a yard within a day’s drive that has vintage vehicles. Members are encouraged to invite non-members to join us in the fun, including lunch afterwards. KYANA members pay a reduced rate to dine, non-members pay menu price. It’s a great way to expose non-members to the quality membership of KYANA and the AACA. Later this month, a relatively new KYANA member is sponsoring a chili supper combined with a chrome plating seminar presented by the owner of a Tennessee chrome plating company. We are encouraging our members to invite non-members to this event that will be held at our local clubhouse.
So, how do you go about extending an invite to non-members? If you ask around, you will likely find that your current region or chapter members also belong to other non-AACA affiliated clubs, either local or national. Some national marque clubs might have local chapters in your area. Both large and small metro areas often have more than one vintage car club, including – dare I say it! – street rod clubs. Ask your members about their non-AACA club affiliations, and then ask them to extend an invite to one of your upcoming events. If that happens, ensure that someone, hopefully one of your club’s officers, extends a welcome to the non-members and introduces them to your members during the event.
So, are your doors (and minds) open or closed to new members? We would love to hear about some of your recruitment activities outside the boundaries of the AACA community.

As time goes hastily marching by so does progress, and change is inevitable.
A picture-perfect example of this occurred on April 22nd this year at the City of Mobile's Earth Day Celebration when a group of like-minded people put their collective thoughts together and came up with the idea to sponsor a car show in celebration of Earth Day, combining vintage gasoline powered vehicles and electric vehicles on the grounds of our clubhouse facilities. And what a splendid event it turned out to be.
One might think that a car show featuring vintage “gas guzzlers” to modern day electric “plug-ins” would be a counterintuitive oxymoron, but you couldn't have been more wrong.
At its inception, Evelyn D'Angelo, Project Manager for Keep Mobile Beautiful, in conjunction with the City of Mobile, was planning an Earth Day celebration showcasing the beautiful Charles Woods Japanese Gardens. The day would also include family fun, food and activities. As ideas were tossed around, it was suggested that, after all, it was Earth Day, why not include a showing of electric vehicles. Brilliant, right?
As the idea expanded, Dale Holden took the reins. Dale is Co-Leader of the Bay Area Chapter of Drive Electric Alabama, which is a statewide coalition initiative to educate the public on alternative fuel vehicles. Pardon the pun, but now the wheels were turning!
During the planning process, more and more folks became interested in attending and participating in the event. It quickly became apparent that more space would be needed for the car show vehicles, as well as spectator parking. This is where the Deep South Region AACA enters the picture.
Since our clubhouse and its 2.5 acres are across the street from the Japanese Gardens where the Earth Day activities were to be held, it seemed only logical for the group to inquire about the possibility of using our grounds for extra parking. Ms. D'Angelo contacted our President, Zeno Chaudron, to discuss the proposal. Because of insurance stipulations, unless it was a club sponsored event, we could not allow them to utilize our grounds/facilities, but by a stroke of genius Mr. Chaudron suggested we declare it a Deep South event and join forces to include vintage vehicles from our membership. A star was born!
From there, we moved forward with plans to chronologically showcase our vehicles from the past with the vehicles of the future. Why not try to demonstrate the importance of automotive history and heritage, and how much it has advanced since Henry Ford? That is really what it is all about. Yes, we need to work together to preserve our planet, all the while appreciating the efforts of those whose ideas trail-blazed transportation.
|
|
When show day arrived, we had 22 registered EVs and 21 vintage cars that made an appearance, and there were so many spectators we ran out of room to park everyone requiring us to direct them across the highway to Langan Park! But we managed and everyone, young and “not so young,” seemed to have a great time traversing between the two genres. The weather cooperated in glorious fashion.
Everyone seemed genuinely interested in both the old and the new and enjoyed teaching their children the importance of it all. There were painted, smiling faces of the children who barely came up to the wheel wells of the old cars, to the perplexed faces of the older generation as they peered into the technically advanced, empty caverns under the hoods of the new.
It was definitely an eye-opening experience for me, as it relates to EVs; learning how one might determine the miles you had left in your battery before being stranded in the proverbial middle of nowhere, and how to know just where to go for recharging stations which is something I feel sure most folks have pondered. Then there was learning generally about EVs that ran on battery power as well as gasoline, versions that used both sources at the same time, and those that are totally electric. Don't ask me to explain it, but I can appreciate it with certainty.
By the same token, I hope there were those of the newer generation who could appreciate the excitement one gets when starting a vintage V-8 gasoline engine or the sense of achievement one has when mastering the art of driving a 1915 Model T. Although many of our antique cars aren't driven as much anymore, and may be relics from the past, they are definitely worth appreciating and preserving. It is our past, and we must revere it, while at the same time moving forward.
All in all, there were spectators and cars from all over the state. And the foot traffic demonstrated that. We have never (or at least in many years) seen this many spectators on our property. People are curious about the new generation of automobile, and as demonstrated, when combining the old with the new, they will turn out in masses.
It was a worthwhile learning experience for all of us as we acknowledged the uniqueness of each generation, and one in which we will consider replicating in the future.

If you are planning a tour or day excursion for a group near the Hershey area, why not include a stop at our building as part of your itinerary? We even have a back patio with picnic tables where your group can host lunch.
If you would like to book a tour, please reach out to Amoi Goldman, AACA Reference Librarian & Outreach Coordinator, at 717-534-2082 or agoldman@aaca.org.

The familiar red/orange and yellow Little Tikes Cozy Coupe has outsold the Volkswagen Beetle and the Ford Model T. According to Smithsonian Magazine, production of the foot-powered Flintstone-like kiddie car had already exceeded 22 million by 2012. The Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum in Cleveland has the first one made from 1979 in its permanent collection. It was designed by former Chrysler stylist Jim Mariol.
