Giving Thanks

By Stacy Zimmerman, Speedster Editor, szimmerman@aaca.org

The holiday season is upon us, and while many seem to be running headfirst into Christmas, let’s make sure to give Thanksgiving its dues. Many folks incorporate the concept of giving thanks into their daily lives, which is a great practice, but sometimes life and all of its stuff bogs us down and it’s hard to remember to be thankful all of the time. This is exactly why I believe Thanksgiving is so important. The Thanksgiving holiday gives us permission to carve out the time we need to decompress from the everyday and really think about what we have to be thankful for.

Yes, I am in it for the food – the turkey, mashed potatoes (my favorite!), stuffing, cranberry relish, etc. – but I am also in it for the family. My immediate family is fairly small – just my parents, my two sisters and their husbands, and myself and my husband. Grandparents, aunts, and uncles have all passed. One of my sisters lives in South Carolina, and she and her husband don’t come home to Pennsylvania for Thanksgiving, so that leaves 6 of us. Now, anyone who knows my family, you know that we have a tendency to “adopt” people into our family. We all suffer from the cliché… the more, the merrier. I have no doubt that when I show up at my sister’s house tomorrow with a pumpkin pie in hand that the table will be set for 20. We’ll have best friends who have nowhere else to go, my parents’ friends and their daughter who has been my “cousin” my entire life, the daughter and granddaughter of the woman who used to help take care of my grandmother, two of my mom’s customers from her salon that have become close friends, and I could go on and on. Our Thanksgiving is all about the family we have created and not just the one we were born into, and I’m extremely thankful for that.

The same goes for this big AACA family of ours. By attending events, showing cars, participating in tours, joining local regions, etc., over time we each end up creating our very own AACA family. I’m thankful for the opportunity to meet so many amazing members over my 11 ½ years here. I’m equally thankful that many of you have become friends. I am thankful that AACA exists and that I get to work for all of you and support this fantastic hobby. I’m especially thankful for all of my awesome co-workers who make it easy to love working here.

When I really boil it down, the thing I am most thankful for is my family, my adopted family, and my AACA family. Please make time for the ones you are thankful for, and I promise your Thanksgiving will be that much sweeter.

Regarding Membership Renewal Forms & Antique Automobile Magazine

During this time of year, we are receiving membership renewals on a daily basis. Please know that we always try to process them as quickly as possible. Having said that, we do have to send the mailing file for Antique Automobile magazine about 3 weeks before you actually receive it in your mailbox so some renewals may not get processed before the mailing list is created. If you know that you sent your renewal in to us or that your region/chapter sent in your renewal, please disregard the extra renewal notice. Thank you in advance for understanding the situation!

In Giving Thanks & Giving Donations

By Jen Wolfe, AACA Library Director, jwolfe@aaca.org

The season of giving, and giving thanks, is upon us. Here at the AACA Library, we are grateful for so much, as we are every year. Month after month, we are the recipients of the thoughtfulness and generosity of the old car community – our collection grows larger, and more diverse, and the result is a more valuable resource for AACA members and car hobbyists the world over.

Earlier this year, we reminded Speedster readers that the library has needs that go beyond the literature and books themselves. As we now get into the time of year where folks are sorting through attics and garages, bookcases and boxes, and making decisions about what to keep and what to let go of, we hope you’ll remember that there are many ways to support our library that are all equally as important and appreciated!

To put it into context, once donations of sales literature, catalogs, magazines, photos, and memorabilia arrive on our doorstep, we start the process of evaluating and cataloging each item. We want our material to stand the test of time, which is why we invest in archival-safe supplies, whether that’s acid-free paper and cardboard products, metal bookends and holders that won’t rust, or plastic supplies that don’t off-gas chemicals. When you donate material to our library, you can be sure that it’s being placed in a safe, clean, environment that preserves the items in it for decades to come.

Archive-safe document boxes, plastic sleeves, envelopes, folders, and acrylic holders are all supplies that the library is in constant need of. So, when you donate material to us that you hope ends up in the collection, we hope you also consider what all goes into saving those materials for the future antique car owners!

We want to give a huge THANK YOU to the donors who have included monetary donations in conjunction with their material donations, for this very reason. It may feel less thrilling to help buy folders and envelopes, than it does to give us your treasured book collection, but in fact it truly is just as valued by us. Your librarians here are, at heart, nerds – believe me, it brings us no less joy to open packages from our archive vendors, gazing at the crisp, new folders, labels, and envelopes within.

If you are looking to donate automotive material to the AACA Library, visit our website for more information on the donation process. On the Donations & Giving webpage, you will see a link for our Collection Development Policy, which explains what type of automotive documents the library is in need of. As always, the best practice is to call the library and speak with a staff member first, so that we can help ensure that the items you want to give us are ones we are able to accept. If you have any questions about donating, please give me a call directly at 717-534-2082 ext. 1410.

This Thanksgiving, Matt, Amoi, Jim, Spencer, and I, all offer our donors and supporters a very heartfelt thank you for all the many ways you show your care, appreciation, and friendship. Our library is your library, and we look forward to continuing our work to make it better every year. Happy Thanksgiving, to all!

Please scroll all the way to the end of Speedster to find the answer.

Member Story: Taking Model A Mail Truck #11729 Back Home

By Roger Davis, Utah Valley Model A Club President, Spanish Fork, UT, rldavis1929@aol.com

This is a member submitted article.

I recently had the chance to take my 1931 Model A Mail Truck #11729 from Utah back to its roots in Pennsylvania and Minnesota. We attended the 2024 Model A Days at the Gilmore Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan. I was impressed to see the quality of the Model A restorations in that part of the country. They were indeed beautiful. I was quite fortunate to make a presentation there on Model A Mail Trucks. The Hickory Corners Post Office was delighted to cancel the stamped post cards I handed out. Click here to watch my presentation. I also have a collection of more than 1,500 photos of 120 Model A Mail Trucks. To view a slide show of these photos, click here.

We left Hickory Corners for Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to join the 78th Revival AAA Glidden Tour®. This tour is limited to about 100 pre-WWII cars. It was a beautiful tour that included six 100-mile tours on 6 days in that part of the country. We saw some beautiful cars – Packards, Cords, Hudsons, Willys Knights, Marmons, even brass-era Oldsmobiles! It was absolutely wonderful to see these cars touring, even in heavy rain, through that beautiful countryside.

I had a lot of fun searching for a Stewart-Warner 495 commercial vacuum wiper motor for my mail truck at the 2024 Hershey Swap Meet. If you have one of these wiper motors, please let me know as I am still on the hunt. The final day of Hershey week is the National car show, and it is truly amazing! It was so much fun talking to people about their cars and about my mail truck. We attended the awards banquet and were quite pleased to learn that the judges awarded a National First Prize (First Junior) to #11729.

The bodies for the 1931 Model A Mail Trucks were made in Mifflinburg, PA, about 50 miles north of Hershey. We took #11729 to the building where its wood body was made and painted drab olive green. The building still exists. We were fortunate enough to talk with one of the workers there who showed us the huge vault on the main floor and the unrestored area of the building that looks like it did back in the 1930s. He told us about Fred, the building’s ghost who smokes cherry pipe tobacco and frequently disrupts television reception and messes up the beds in Suite #4.

We capped off our trip by taking #11729 back to Northern Minnesota where it transported mail between the post offices of Lake George, Emmaville, La Porte, Lake Itasca, and Park Rapids. It was especially rewarding as we were filling #11729 with gas, a man approached us asking about the mail truck. It ends up that his father purchased #11729 from the Post Office in 1957. What a great reunion!

What a great chance to take #11729 back to where its body was built and where it carried the mail. Beyond this we saw multiple car museums, beautiful countryside, and met some wonderful people. I love old cars! I love the people! Thanks for making this hobby the best one I’ve ever had.

We want to hear from you!!

We are always looking to feature articles from AACA members in Speedster. We'd love to share your personal accounts of tours and shows you have attended, restoration projects, unique vehicle stories and history, and any other stories you think other AACA members would enjoy hearing about.

Stories should average about 500 words or less. And we love photos, so make sure to include some! Please send your photos and stories to szimmerman@aaca.org

Bringing a Positive End to 2025

Please consider giving – your support is appreciated!

By Steve Moskowitz, AACA National CEO, aaca1@aaca.org

2025 is almost in the “bag” as they say. It was quite a year for the club with a phenomenal convention, many great shows and tours, and capped off with an amazing Grand National in Dayton and a Hershey which once again had very good weather. 2026 has a full and diverse schedule of events – many in entirely new parts of the country. It should be a great year for AACA!

As you consider your year-end taxes and philanthropy, hopefully you will consider making a special tax-deductible gift to your club. We hope that those who are required to take a mandatory distribution from their retirement accounts will consider AACA as part of your tax savings plans. Please discuss this with your accountant.

Many of you have already given, some have not. Our sincerest THANK YOU to everyone who has continued to support this club with your time and donations! We hate to ask again as we truly realize there are many deserving charities you can choose from for your charitable donations. However, the club is continuing its quest to become stronger each year and your generosity helps us to maintain and grow our member services.

So, we are asking you to please seriously consider making a tax-deductible contribution before the end of the year – it will make all the difference for the future of this club. You can make a general donation to the club, or you can specify your donation to go to the library endowment or the building fund endowment. You can make your donation one of three ways:

Click here to donate online – easy and fast!

Call us at 717-534-1910 and we will take a donation via credit card over the phone.

Mail a check off to us right away.

Send to: AACA, 800 W. Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, PA 17033

Remember, you do not have to itemize to take this deduction and any donation amount is appreciated! We will send you an acknowledgement letter for your records.

2026 Hershey Flea Market & Car Corral Pre-Registration Information

By R.J. "Mac" MacAdam, Flea Market/Car Corral Registration Chairman,

Hershey Region AACA, fallmeet@hersheyaaca.org

On behalf of the Hershey Region, we thank you for attending the 2025 Fall Nationals. We hope you had an enjoyable experience.

As a reminder, the Eastern Fall Nationals will again be held the first full week in October starting Tuesday and ending with the judged car show on Friday. Mark your calendar for the 2026 show October 6-9. We have already begun working on the 2026 show in which Bonnie Kulikowski will be the Fall Meet Chairman and Frank Desendi will be her assistant.

We will be mailing the 2026 pre-registration packets at the end of December. If you do not receive your packet in the mail by January 20, 2026, you should call 717-566-7720 on Monday or Wednesday between 1-5 p.m. eastern time or email

fallmeet@hersheyaaca.org.

Please read the following important information regarding the submission of pre-registration cards:

  1. A "Space Relocation Form" will be enclosed in each vendor's packet. This will be the only form accepted for space relocation. If you write your request on the pre-registration card, or a separate sheet of paper, etc., it will NOT be accepted. Also, be advised we make assignments using the postmark on the envelope. The space(s) must be available after the pre-registration phase in order for you to be relocated. (Additional spaces are NOT SOLD during pre-registration. The May/June issue of Antique Automobile magazine will include the procedure for acquiring new spaces during summer registration.)
  2. Pay close attention to the deadline on the card. The pre-registration postmark deadline is February 15, 2026. A $25 late fee will be charged for pre-registration cards received with a postmark of February 16th to March 15th. Registration cards received after March 15th, 2026, will be returned and the spaces deleted from the vendor's record. The deleted spaces will be placed on the availability list for summer registration. The registered vendor is ultimately responsible for the timely submission of the pre-registration material.
  3. If your card or check is not signed it will be returned to you. That will also delay your postmark position for relocation.
  4. Checks deposited that are returned for insufficient funds, account was closed, etc., will be charged a $35 administration fee.
  5. The dates and times for which our telephones will be staffed will be printed on the pre-registration card. If you leave a message, please speak slowly and clearly leaving your name, telephone number, AACA member number and a very short message.
  6. If you DO NOT receive your new 2026 AACA membership card by January 20th, DO NOT wait to mail your pre-registration card. Write your AACA member number in the space provided on the card and mail it with your check or money order.

ATTENTION: Regions & Chapters

Free Region/Chapter Membership Applications

Four 2026 FREE membership applications have been mailed to your current region/chapter President. These applications can only be used for the recruitment of BRAND NEW AACA NATIONAL MEMBERS and must be signed by a region/chapter representative. These membership forms must be used by September 1, 2026. All 2025 free membership applications received after September 1, 2025, will be applied to the 2026 membership year.

ATTENTION: Regions & Chapters

$3,000-$5,000 Grants Available to Regions Hosting National Activities

The AACA National Board of Directors realizes that the financial risk involved with hosting a national show or tour has caused many regions and chapters to be hesitant to volunteer to host a national event. Some regions simply do not have the funds available to even think about hosting.

The board has approved a grant program for any region receiving board approval to host a national event that has not hosted one for more than ten years. Here's how it breaks down:

  • $5,000 grants available to regions hosting national car shows
  • $5,000 grants available to regions hosting national 5-day tours
  • $3,000 grants available to regions hosting national 3-day tours

There are many opportunities to host one of these events. We have Winter Nationals available and will schedule up to three years in advance. Spring and Fall National shows are available to schedule for Eastern, Southeastern, Central and Western Divisions, also up to 3 years in advance.

Touring events share the same opportunities. Founders Tour, Sentimental Tour, Vintage Tour, Reliability Tour, Glidden Tour and all four Divisional Tours have available openings for your region to reserve for up to three years in advance.

For more information, please contact Greg Jackson, VP National Activities, at greg.jackson15@outlook.com or 704-408-6217.

Don’t miss this opportunity to host a national event. Take advantage of this special grant program while the National Board has this offer available!

Is YOUR Region/Chapter Prepared to Recruit New Members?

When your region or chapter holds a local car show, that is your best opportunity to recruit new members. The people attending your show are there because they already have an interest in antique cars. If your event is open to non-members, those who have registered and are showing their cars are already willing to participate. These are the folks you should be engaging about how much you enjoy being an AACA member and that they should think about joining.

Now, don’t be caught empty-handed at this point! Make sure your region/chapter has something to hand out to potential new members. When you are planning your event, be sure to reach out to National Headquarters to get a supply of materials to help you.

All of these items are available to you at no charge:

-- AACA National Membership Brochure

-- AACA National Membership Application

-- Mustang Car Cutouts

-- AACA National Military Membership Application

Trivia Answer

In the early days, Porsche was living from hand to mouth, though its arrangement with Volkswagen dictated that consulting services remain exclusive in the minimalist category. Simultaneously, Studebaker was considering a small, but still Ameri-sized, people’s car of its own for the U.S. masses, so they contracted the German engineering firm to produce a Porsche 542 four-door prototype in 1953. Actually, a stretched/taller four-passenger 356 (the 530) was proposed first, though was not up to such demand. Studebaker ultimately rejected the second iteration which was known as Z-87 in South Bend (due to their own financial distractions, it took them until 1956 to finally evaluate the concept), though the lucrative $500,000 consultancy contact was able to fund Porsche production expansion. And they never looked back since. It’s been said that the initial 530-idea sparked similar thinking for the landmark 911 that followed.
