Can You Smell the Chocolate in the Air?

By Stacy Zimmerman, Speedster Editor, szimmerman@aaca.org

It’s almost time… just 5 short days. Five days until we’re all together again at our favorite event in our favorite little town seeing all of our favorite people and being surrounded by everything that we love about this hobby. The yearlong countdown is coming to an end… Hershey, here we come!

You have four seasons worth of clothes packed to make sure you are ready for whatever mother nature decides to throw at us, the camper is stocked, treasures soon-to-be for sale are loaded, your show car has been detailed, all your paperwork and parking stickers are laying on the front seat, and your hotel was booked 365 days ago before you left Hershey last year. Sound familiar?

You’ve got each day’s agenda planned out from which flea market field you will be perusing when to what you will be eating where. You’ve got your list of needed parts and tools and know just how much cash you’re “allowed” to spend and how many cars you’re “allowed” to buy. 😉 You’ve already planned happy hours and dinners with both new acquaintances and old friends. And you are totally ready for the keen eyes of the judges to see that your car is ready to win its next award.

Hershey is not just a car show; it’s an experience. It’s the sights, sounds and smells of the ultimate car culture gathering that continues to bring generation after generation back to Hershey every year. It becomes a tradition among families and friends that cannot be missed no matter what. I am warning you now… Hershey will become a lifelong obsession that will make you smile every time you think of it.

Oh, and just one more thing… I had a very long conversation with mother nature and put in an order for perfect weather for Hershey Week and she did not disappoint! See you in just 5 short days – safe travels everyone!

AACA, BHA & SAH 3-in-1 Event

By Helen V Hutchings, AACA, SAH, hvhent@cox.net

Fall Hershey will offer attendees a bigger and better than ever AACA Library & Research Center Yard Sale on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 3. Bigger and better because in addition to the AACA Library’s tent with its offerings of duplicates of literature, books, and other items, a second tent will have still more vintage literature and books offered by the Buick Heritage Alliance (BHA). Then, there will be a third tent in which the Society of Automotive Historians (SAH) will host in excess of 20 authors of current books covering a myriad of automotive topics from tech, to marque and company histories, biographies, and even automotive adventure fiction.

Just to keep things in perspective, AACA was founded in 1935. SAH came along a bit over 50 years ago in 1969. BHA is the youngest of the three, quickly putting itself on a solid foundation since its 2004 establishment by building an awesome collection of Buick literature, documentation, and even a few venerable Buick motorcars. As 2021 drew to a close, the BHA’s entire 50,000-plus literature collection joined AACA’s holdings moving into the new AACA Library & Research Center building and BHA proudly announced it had hired its own full-time curator/archivist, Spencer Paterick, who now works alongside and under the supervision of AACA Library staff. At this October’s Fall Hershey, BHA will—for the first time ever—offer its surplus duplicates of General Motors and Buick literature for sale during the Yard Sale event.

Authors shown will be returning this October and joined by many more—some 20+ all together—at least two of whom have NEVER been to a Fall Hershey before. This is your opportunity to show them all just what Fall Hershey enthusiasm is all about. The lawn/parking lot area adjacent to the AACA Headquarters building is the place to be on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 3, 2023. Library and BHA tents will open at 4 p.m. SAH’s authors will be in place to welcome you as you line up beforehand. All three tents close at 7 p.m.

From 2022 SAH authors’ signing (left side of tables from nearest to furthest): First, adventure novelist Jim "JK" Kelly, whose Deadly Driver, now adapted to a screenplay earning attention of film producers here and abroad, soon will have a sequel. Next is Antique Automobile editor West Peterson seated beside Steve Rossi. The duo are signing Rossi’s anthology of columns chosen from the past 15 years writing for AA titled Gearhead at Large. Just beyond Rossi is a stalwart AACA member Bob Riley, author of Field Guide to Aftermarket Parts, with the first one covering 1946-1948 Dodge. The next one will cover tri-five Chevs. Beyond Riley is Dave Hermanson, whose book The Mobilgas Economy Run is the definitive history of that fuel efficiency competition, 1936 to 1968. At the far end is Kit Foster, author of the seminal work on The Stanley Steamer.

Trivia Question

As the home of the Antique Automobile Club of America and the Eastern Fall Nationals, were any cars ever manufactured in or around Hershey, Pennsylvania?

Member Story: Hey, That’s My Car Over There

By Bob Terpak, Harrisburg, PA, bobcat2999@aol.com

This is a member submitted article.

One of the many highlights of Hershey Week is the cars. It may be the sound of a brass car driving around the show confines. It may be the sight and sound of a Model T heading up Hershey Road. It may be the sight of a true barn find tucked into a vendor’s space in the Flea Market area, it may be a car in the Car Corral, or it may be something in the Friday Car Show behind the AACA Headquarters building. Who among us has not said, “I wish I still had my old (fill in the blank) car?” It is one thing to think about it, but what happens when you actually see someone you don’t know driving and enjoying your old car?

Last year, I came out of the Green Field onto the Car Corral when I immediately caught the distinctive front fender of a yellow 1966 Plymouth Fury III. Alas, the car was a convertible and not a 2-door hardtop like the one that my dad had purchased in the fall of 1965.

That car was a special one for me because I went with my dad to various dealers, and I watched the art of the deal with him. He was all over the spectrum from buying a new Coronet off the showroom floor to ordering the Fury and waiting for it to be built. He traded in our Fawn Beige 1961 Plymouth 4-door sedan and got $899 as the trade-in. In my mind, the old car was to be quickly forgotten.

The dealer waxed and cleaned up the car, fixed the sagging headliner, reinstalled the wraparound piece of chrome at the right rear, replaced the chrome flashlight pods at the taillights, played with the numbers on the odometer and put the car on his used car lot for $895.

Soon it was gone. Shortly thereafter, it showed up in front of a local tavern with an employee sticker for the nearby South Buffalo Railroad. It was dad’s car; the dog dish hubcaps and the replacement vinyl on the front seat confirmed it. For the next four years, the owner got good use of the car as I would see it parked in front of various local taverns. At Christmas time, 1969, the car was sitting in front of the local Shell station with a for sale sign asking $125. The sag in the headliner was back and the glove compartment and glove box door were missing.

Dad did not connect with the 1966 Fury and traded it in April 1968 for a new Dodge Coronet 440 2-door hardtop White Hat Special. Thinking the Plymouth was out of our life, it was a shock soon after to see it sitting next to my Uncle Jack’s car at the Bethlehem Steel Strip Mill parking lot. The new owner was the brother of one of the other salesmen at the Dodge dealership where we traded it in at and he worked at the Strip Mill.

In the summer of 1970, newly graduated from college, I was looking for a set of wheels. Sitting in the Bargains Galore section of the Dodge dealership was a familiar looking yellow 1966 Plymouth Fury III 2-door hardtop! With its black vinyl interior, radio, heater, automatic and rear defroster, I was tempted; however, I bought a new 1970 Dart Swinger with the 318 and the free Automatic Transmission Package. As before, the dealer freshened up the Fury along with a set of new tires and he also replaced the driver’s side arm rest. Again, I thought the car was out of our life. A person who lived around the corner from my Aunt Helen bought the car. It was still around in early 1974 when I relocated to Pittsburgh.

As for the Dart, I traded it in 1973 when it had 80,000 miles. I saw it but once afterwards at an ARCO station. The dealer cleaned the car, touched up the paint and took care of the compression loss. The young new owner seemed quite happy with the car even with the dent in the front bumper.

The string was broken when I traded the ‘73 in for a 1976 Volare Premier 2-door coupe. The Volare screamed ‘70s all over it with the spring-loaded hood ornament, the pinstripes, the vinyl landau roof and the velour interior. I had it for over three years, and it was a great car. While it had the typical Mopar issues with the ignition system, it had no issues with the fenders rusting. The only problem with the car was that for whatever reason it could not climb the hills or maneuver the pavement block streets of Pittsburgh during the winter seasons.

In 1980, I traded the car for a new Horizon. To my surprise, the proprietor of the local Gyro sandwich shop fourteen blocks from my office bought the car and he proudly parked it in from of his shop. It was definitely my old car; the dealer even left my hand-cut carpet floor mats in the rear. Perhaps it was the new radial tires that the dealer installed before he sold the car off his used car lot; the fact was two years later the car was still rust-free, shiny and clean as it still sat in front of his shop.

Each one of the cars managed to provide solid transportation for the next owner. I would have to say that the yellow Fury would be the one I wish I still had today.

Update on the Oral History Project

According to the original schedule, the printed books were supposed to be mailed out in August, but the project took a little longer than expected because of the number of members who participated. Publishing Concepts (PCI) has informed us that everything is currently with the printer, but that they are experiencing some production issues right now. As soon as they are able to print the books, they will begin shipping them. Unfortunately, we don’t have an exact ship date yet though.

We sincerely appreciate all of your patience throughout this project and while waiting for your printed book to arrive. If you have questions about your order and timing, feel free to contact the PCI Client Experience Team at clientservice@publishingconcepts.com or 1-800-982-1590.

Thank you again to all of our members who participated in this project!

ATTENTION: AACA Regions & Chapters

We Need Your Help with the New AACA History Center

We are currently developing an interactive timeline for the AACA History Center. Plans are to launch the first stage of the project next week during the Hershey show. The timeline focuses on the club's history, and we would like to include important milestones and history from your Regions and/or Chapters. Please submit a brief description and images related to the milestone(s) to general@aaca.org. Images are not required.

Golden Crescent Region Celebrates 55th Anniversary

By Nancy Whiddon, Newsletter Editor of The Broken Axle, Victoria, TX, nkw348@gmail.com

This is a member submitted article.

It was another wonderful get-together for our club. We had at least 76 attendees including friends, family members and new members. And we did it again, for such a small club, we had 5 local Car Club Presidents in attendance including our GCRAACA President Richard Ross; Victoria Model A Club President Ron Albert; Greater Houston Model A Club Past President Willie Sanders; Victoria Cruisers Car Club President Henry Danysh; and Coastal Bend Corvette Club President Larry Rausch. Wow what a car club community we are lucky to have. Everyone joined in to help us celebrate our 55th anniversary. We all enjoyed some cake while our Club Activities Coordinator Kathleen Ross read the list of members since the formation of our region.

In other news… Our club was invited to attend the opening of a new exhibit at Five Points Museum of Contemporary Art here in Victoria, TX, called “Glimpses of the Past.” Our member Willie Sanders is loaning five antique cars from his collection to compliment the photographs of Bessie Dean Parr. His cars will be on display for four months.

When the Aloha Region started the Lahaina fund drive, we had hopes of raising $4,000. Thanks to all of you and the help of so many others, we completed the Lahaina fund donation through First Hawaiian Bank on Friday. The Aloha Region was able to donate $10,200 for the devastated people of Lahaina.

We can’t thank you enough.

HVPR members Tony and Leslie Scarpelli, Jonathan Smith, John Wyatt, and Al & Linda Crane joined with other participants and many spectators to enjoy a fun-filled afternoon in the Historic Downtown Phoebus District of Hampton, VA. Local restaurants and shops, plus lots and lots of amazing cars made for a great day.

It’s Time to Renew Your AACA Membership for 2024

By Karen White, AACA Membership Department, kwhite@aaca.org

As most of you know, your AACA membership runs for a calendar year – January 1 through December 31. From now through the end of the year, AACA Headquarters gets a little crazy with membership renewal phone calls and mail. It's not uncommon for us to receive several hundred renewals in a day. Even though it's our busiest time of the year, making sure we get our 45,000+ members renewed is always our top priority.

A membership renewal form was included with your September/October issue of Antique Automobile magazine. Simply fill out the form and send it back to the office with a check or credit card information.

If you're going to be at Hershey, you can also stop by

the AACA trailer, tent or any of the special membership stands

and renew your membership in person with us.

You can also use our new and improved online renewal on our website. Renewing online is quick and easy! Just log in with your membership number and pin number, review the information currently listed on your membership record and make changes if necessary. Review your information one more time and choose your payment type. Payment options include Visa, MasterCard, Discover or PayPal. Your payment will automatically record to your membership record.

Your membership number and pin number can be found on your membership card. If you don’t know your membership number and/or pin number, you can call AACA National Headquarters at 717-534-1910 or email membership@aaca.org. Please DON’T try to pay your dues by using the JOIN AACA tab. This WILL NOT renew your membership – instead, it will create a new one.

We look forward to seeing or hearing from all of you very soon!

Membership Corner: Renewing Members We Already Have

By Ralph Towner, AACA Membership Committee Member, townerralph@gmail.com

This is a member submitted article.

Autumn is here, which means a new AACA membership renewal season begins. Without renewals, except for lifetime members, we have zero membership on January 1st. It is essential we continue to recruit new members but retaining the ones we already have is equally vital. Our current AACA membership is in effect our “customers.” Any good salesman will tell you the easiest customer to get is the one you already have.

Most of our members who have belonged to AACA for years renew promptly. However, we must understand that some of our newer members and even some longer-term members have other interests and obligations. They may not realize the many advantages and benefits of continuing to belong to AACA. Sometimes members just simply forget to renew because life is busy, and things get missed. Most of our members who hesitate to renew can be retained by the membership person from your region. They should contact members who have not paid their dues, explain the AACA benefits and offer to help them renew. Above all, make sure these members know their membership is valued.

Just a few reminders… AACA is the largest, most inclusive auto club in the world. There are insurance benefits for our events and our officers. The AACA Library has competent librarians to assist you with automotive research. Publications such as the award-winning Antique Automobile magazine and Speedster, an online newsletter which is emailed each month, are included. AACA has a national website as well as many regional websites with current information. There are several national activities including shows, judging opportunities and tours. All of these events offer awards to those who have earned them. Don’t forget about the annual convention, too. There are student memberships and youth programs available as well as scholarships. Click here to learn more. Our greatest benefit though is the friendships we make. You join because of the cars. You stay because of the people.

Our current National Board of Directors led by President Fred Trusty, along with help from the AACA staff, have devised a new efficient and easy online renewal system. Click here to go directly to the renewal page. Sign in using your member number and pin and a form will come up with all of your information already filled in. Check to make sure everything is correct and with a few more clicks, you are renewed. I just renewed for 2024 using this method. It was effortless! Great job, Fred, Board and staff!

Explain this method to everyone in your region. If a member prefers using the conventional renewal form that is on the activities sheet/mailing label with your national magazine, that option is still available. If they are still not sure, have them call 717-534-1910 and a friendly AACA staff member will be happy to help.

I have found that most of our members will renew when prompted, so by all means, be certain each member is contacted before writing them off. Renewing the members we already have is a vital part of keeping AACA strong.

Youth Development Corner: What Finally Convinced Me to Join AACA

By Elliott Golden, Fredericksburg, VA, roostermotorsports@aol.com

This is a member submitted article.

I joined AACA in June of 2023 at age 24 after staying in touch with my regional group for about a year. Being young, I am hyper-focused on saving money, so I am hesitant to join things that incur a monthly or annual cost. What finally convinced me to join? It was seeing the benefits of events put on by our local group and how focused they were on the originality of the cars, which has always been a focus of mine. Secondly, I noticed the camaraderie and how the group would always come together to educate each other on unique aspects of their cars and fix issues through a collective knowledge. The knowledge and experiences I would gain with them outweighed the financial cost to join. I have been attending as many meetings as possible and have even shared some of my own knowledge by giving a presentation on the steps to getting cleaner and better proportioned photographs of our vintage cars.

I originally gained an appreciation for vintage cars through my mother who would take me to antique car shows as a young boy. While we never had any real connection to any vintage cars, I was still passionate about them early on. I was not raised on wrenching but grew a black thumb in my teenage years. I didn’t attend many parties; instead, I liked to stay home and hone my mechanical skills. My 1986 Nissan 200SX, 1986 Mercedes-Benz 300E, 1988 Lincoln Mark VII LSC, 1991 Mazda MX-5, and 1951 Chevrolet Deluxe 4-door (some of which I no longer own) have brought me some of the most memorable experiences in my life and I am always looking for different platforms to increase my skills in vintage restoration. Restoring a 6-volt system and working with cloth-covered wire was one of the most memorable things I have done recently. I plan to get some experience with a 1960s Alfa Romeo GT 1300 or air-cooled Porsche 911 and also take some time next year to join in on some vintage racing at our nearby road courses.

Making new connections, sharing experiences, and learning further about these wonderful cars that surround us has always been my motivator. I could sit with someone in their garage for 3-4 hours with ease just chatting about anything vintage. So, don’t give up on recruiting younger members – we may just need a little extra time to figure out how great AACA really is.

AACA Offers Six Scholarships Application Deadline: December 1

Susquehannock Region Automotive Technology Scholarship (formerly known as the AACA Student Scholarship): Cash award to a student currently enrolled in an institution of higher learning leading up to a degree in antique automotive technology and or restoration.

AACA Young People’s Award: A cash award to an AACA member (student or regular) who has been accepted into an accredited institution of higher learning or is now enrolled in such institution, i.e., a four-year college leading to a bachelor’s degree or a two-year vocational education program leading to a degree. Applicant must be nominated by a Region or Chapter of AACA and must be no more than 25 years old.

AACA Scholarship: A cash award to any AACA member (student or regular) who has been accepted to an accredited institution of higher learning or is now enrolled in such institution, i.e., a four-year college leading to a bachelor’s degree or a two-year vocational education program leading to a diploma. Applicant must be no more than 25 years old.

Louise Bianchi Chiotti Memorial Scholarship Award: Louise (Bianchi) Chiotti was born on June 11, 1914, in San Jose, California. The family’s first automobile was a 1926 Dodge Sedan. Her two younger brothers purchased a 1939 Studebaker and took delivery in January 1939. They wanted to give it to Louise’s son Dave in 1956. His mother thought it too big of a car for a fifteen-year-old in San Francisco and talked him into buying a 1930 Ford Model A Coupe. In 1959 the little Model A was a bit slow, so Dave purchased a 1959 Ford convertible. As Dave sat on the running board of the Ford waiting for the new owner to arrive his mom came and sat next to him. “You really don’t want to sell it do you?” she asked. “NO, I don’t” was my reply.” “Then don’t,” mom said. Dave and Marilyn Chiotti still own the Model A; it is a Senior and First Place Grand National Award Winner. The 1939 Studebaker came to the Chiottis after spending 40 years under a walnut tree. It is now a Senior and First Place Grand National Award Winner. The 1926 Dodge was cut into a truck for ranch use in the 1940s. Dave brought it home in 1976 and built a Woodie. In 2000, they donated it to Luther Burbank Home & Gardens in Santa Rosa. After Dave and Marilyn’s uncle’s passing, they acquired their 1968 Cadillac El Dorado. It now lives in the AACA Museum in Hershey, PA. This $1,500 scholarship is based upon the same rules as the AACA Automotive Technology Award and is awarded as funds are available. It was instituted and funded by Dave and Marilyn Chiotti as a way to honor Louise and a way to continue to support youth in the hobby.

AACA John & Janet Ricketts Leadership Scholarship: A cash award to any AACA member, child or grandchild of an active AACA member in good standing for a least 5 years, who has been accepted to an institute of higher learning or is now enrolled in such institution. The award is granted by the family of John and Janet Ricketts in recognition of their love of AACA and their belief in service to the club. It is also in recognition of our first female National President Janet Ricketts in 1999.

Hershey Region AACA Automotive Restoration Scholarship: Cash award to an AACA member currently enrolled in an institution of higher learning leading up to a degree in antique automotive restoration.

Trivia Answer

Cars produced in series with roots near Hershey, Pennsylvania, were the Kline, originally from Harrisburg, and the Upton out of Lebanon. The first Kline was constructed by a Hummelstown native (though some say he was from nearby Siddonsburg) by the name of James Allen Kline, who began dabbling with the idea in Harrisburg during 1900 while he was distributing Locomobiles and other brands. In 1905, he moved to York, Pennsylvania, with the York Automobile Company and in 1910, on to Virginia. According to the Virginia Museum of History & Culture that’s where he really hit his stride, with some 2,500 to 2,800 now-called Kline Kars produced through 1923. Colcord Upton was behind his 1904-1907 namesake, which was a $2,500-$3,000, 40hp, four-cylinder touring car. When it was chartered in 1984, AACA’s PA Dutch Region used the Upton as part of its logo.
