AACCNJ Endorses U.S. House of Representatives "Leading Global Innovation Resolution" to Address Chinese Communist Party's 'Made in China 2025' Plan

(TRENTON, NJ – September 19, 2023) The African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey (AACCNJ) announces its support of the House Resolution on the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) “Made in China 2025” Plan: A Bipartisan Call to Action for Congress, the Federal Government, and Private Industry to Bolster U.S. Innovation and Support Workers." Colloquially known as the "Leading Global Innovation Resolution” (Resolution), the Resolution condemns the unfair trade practices associated with the CCP's "Made in China 2025" (MIC2025) science and technology strategy. MIC2025 is aimed at bolstering China's leadership in crucial industries such as advanced manufacturing, aerospace, maritime infrastructure, biotechnology, and agriculture science. While the AACCNJ acknowledges the right of any nation to pursue its economic development, it stands in solidarity with the United States House of Representatives in its efforts to shed light on the concerning aspects of this initiative.

The AACCNJ believes in fair and equitable trade practices that allow businesses to thrive and foster economic growth. The "Leading Global Innovation Resolution," introduced on September 18, 2023, at Thomas Edison State University in Trenton, New Jersey, by U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherill, is co-led by the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the U.S. and CCP, Chairman Mike Gallagher, and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi. It serves as an essential step in addressing the potential economic imbalances resulting from MIC2025. It highlights the importance of safeguarding American industries and jobs, promoting innovation, and maintaining a level playing field for businesses across the globe.

In addition to the AACCNJ, the "Leading Global Innovation Resolution" is endorsed by the following organizations that share AACCNJ’s commitment to fair trade and economic growth: Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, IBEW Local 102, New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program, New Jersey Chamber of Commerce, New Jersey Veterans Chamber of Commerce, New Jersey Business and Industry Association, Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey, and New Jersey Council of County Colleges.

"Supporting this Resolution is aligned with our commitment to creating opportunities and equitable access to resources for African-American entrepreneurs and businesses," stated John E. Harmon, Sr., IOM, Founder, President, and CEO of AACCNJ. "We believe that fair trade practices are essential for fostering an environment where businesses can compete on merit and innovation, regardless of their origin."

“The AACCNJ encourages open dialogue and collaboration between nations to find mutually beneficial solutions to global trade challenges. We hope that the "Leading Global Innovation Resolution" will lead to meaningful discussions and actions that address concerns related to trade practices, ensuring a fair and prosperous future for businesses in New Jersey and across the United States,” continued Harmon.
