Happy New Year!

As we move into 2026, I want to reflect on the last several months of 2025, and share an important decision that we have made as a result.

The second quarter of our fiscal year (October to December 2025) saw a remarkable outpouring of support for the work of the Anne Arundel County Food Bank in service of our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. When what turned out to be the longest government shutdown in U.S. history began in October, along with a freeze on SNAP benefits, we saw an uptick in financial donations to the Food Bank, as well as an increase in organized food drives on our behalf. Our online request to visit our Amazon wish list and have food and other necessities sent directly to our warehouse had a response that we could never have anticipated. Three days after our message went out, more than 90 boxes were delivered, and they kept coming for weeks after that. When we needed greater volunteer support for special projects to help us meet the increased need, new shifts filled in a matter of hours. You were there for us and for our neighbors. Because of this outpouring of support, the AACFB was able to increase its monthly food distribution amount by more than 25%, and we continue to provide food at this level in response to the expanded need that high food and energy prices are perpetuating.

During these times of crisis and uncertainty, I and all of the Food Bank team are extremely grateful for the investment that our supporters have made in our work and the trust that you place in the integrity of our operations and in our unwavering commitment to the mission. I imagine that many of you have felt a range of emotions over the past several months, from fear and sadness to frustration and anger. I know that I certainly have run the gamut of feelings, sometimes all in a single day. The AACFB team and I are fortunate to have the opportunity to pour ourselves into work that is an essential response in these troubled times. I believe that you too must share the same sense of purpose and active response to crisis through your support of the work that we “on the ground” experience. It is an honor to be your chosen organization for philanthropic investment. We hold your belief and trust in us to serve our community actively, thoughtfully, and with dignity sacred, and pledge always to be the most careful stewards of these critical resources.

After a great deal of thought and many internal conversations, we have determined that at this time it is imperative that the Anne Arundel County Food Bank remain laser focused on our mission. In response to the unprecedented recent outpouring of support and the mandate it implies to prioritize the diligent execution of our programmatic activities above all else, we have decided not to host our signature event, Feeding Hope, in 2026. A large Food Bank party feels very much at odds with the current climate and, we believe, detracts from the critical nature of our work. In the coming months, instead, we will be devoting ourselves to enhancing our services and seeking solutions that improve the well-being of all our Anne Arundel County neighbors.

I remain cautiously optimistic for 2026 due in no small part to the strength and commitment of all of you. Your partnership is invaluable. Thank you.

With gratitude,

Leah Paley

CEO, Anne Arundel County Food Bank

We Need Your Help!

Anne Arundel County is starting its annual budget process with a series of town halls. We would appreciate your support for our request for $2 million in funding. Everything we receive goes toward supporting our neighbors in need, and the need is still high!

Under a bill passed by Congress last year, Maryland will be required to pay for 75% of SNAP administrative costs and up to 15% of benefit costs. This will place a burden of an estimated $412.5 million on Maryland taxpayers, an increase of just over $300 million from what the state currently contributes.

If you want to find out more, the MD Dept. of Human Services has put together a fact sheet about changes coming to SNAP in our state.
