AADC November 2020
Enews & Douglass Alumnae Highlights
Thanksgiving is a time when we pause from the routines of our day-to-day lives to express gratitude and to come together. This holiday season may be filled with tough choices and changes for our alumnae community and their loved ones. Most of us will not be able to gather in person around our holiday "tables" to celebrate. Instead, many will gather virtually with friends and family, however near or far they may be.

The AADC will continue to come together in new and innovative ways during these challenging times. As we feel the impact of practicing safety protocols, we are grateful for the ways in which we may find new meaning and hope. We are especially thankful for connecting and engaging with alumnae and friends in our AADC virtual space. It is a place, a home of sorts, where we have built a stronger than ever community that has enhanced our alumnae bonds. Through virtual, timely and impactful programs that engage and educate alumnae, we stay connected, strong and relevant. We invite all alumnae to join us at upcoming virtual programs and events.

During the holidays, we think about alumnae and friends who may be facing struggles this Thanksgiving and keep them in our thoughts and prayers. The AADC gives thanks and sends each and every one of our alumnae and friends a harvest of blessings this Thanksgiving.

Please stay safe, healthy and connected.

"Removing the Veil on Racism" Workshop Builds on Intrinsic Trust to Start Difficult Conversations
Rutgers President Jonathan Holloway Addresses AADC Excellence in Inclusion and Equity Initiative

The Associate Alumnae of Douglass College proudly welcomed Dr. Jonathan Holloway, 21st President of Rutgers University, as guest speaker on November 10 at the fourth online workshop in our series, “Removing the Veil on Racism.” He is pictured on the Zoom screen during his address. The virtual sessions, which have drawn hundreds of participants since they began in June, are open to alumnae, friends, the Rutgers community and the public.

An eminent historian and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Holloway began his presidency on July 1, 2020. He previously served as provost of Northwestern University and dean of Yale College.

At the workshop, Dr. Holloway offered praise to the AADC for providing a forum to engage in community discussions about racism as he reflected on his journey to become the first Black president of Rutgers. “It took more than 250 years. Although I may be the first, I will not be the last to lead this great university,” he said.

This session, “Removing the Veil on Racism: Exploring More About the Impact of Code Switching,” was the second presentation led by attorney Caprice R. Jenerson '90, Esq., who was named President & Attorney-in-Charge for the Office of the Appellate Defender in New York, beginning December 1. She is the former Chief Equity & Inclusion Officer and Director of the Pro Bono and Volunteer Unit for the New York Legal Assistance Group. The session was a follow up to her well-attended presentation in September, “The Impact of Double Consciousness and Code Switching."

“We should help other women by having this discussion, give them a lift,” says Caprice, “But we should push further about the systems of institutions in which we operate or we will stay in the same space.”

Caprice examined the far-reaching toll of code switching, beyond exhaustion to depression, physical manifestations, imposter syndrome and more. She also focused on the solutions of decentering white culture as the norm and about how we can blur, or even erase, the line between white culture and “others.”

Breakout rooms and “Community Voices” from alumnae provided opportunities for participants to share their experiences and discuss aspects of the workshop in small groups.
We Are Only Missing YOUR Story

Have you completely revamped your business as a result of the pandemic or started a new one? What’s new, different, challenging and worth sharing? We would love to hear from you. Put the AADC Mission in Motion While You Shop
It sounds like a rhetorical question, but do you shop online at Amazon? With more online shopping than ever during the pandemic, many people have upped their online shopping game. But did you know that every time you buy something, a small donation from that purchase can be sent to the AADC? AmazonSmile is a simple way to support your favorite charitable organization every time you shop, at no cost to you.

First, go to smile.amazon.com and designate the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College as the recipient of your donation. Then shop as you always do, using your existing account information. There is no charge for the service, so you won’t pay extra for your purchases, and the AADC will receive a donation from your shopping.

Start – or continue – shopping on Amazon and let the dollars mount up for the AADC! Please note that AmazonSmile donations to the AADC do not benefit NJC, DRC, Douglass or Rutgers. They benefit the AADC and help keep our mission in motion. Thank you.
