The Impact of Double Consciousness and Code Switching
Wednesday, September 30, 2020, 6:00 - 8:00 pm
Join us next week for this important and informative discussion and workshop for alumnae, friends and the Rutgers community. Now more than ever we are witnessing how racism in America undergirds the social ills we face as a society. The AADC is proud to welcome attorney Caprice Jenerson '90, Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer, New York Legal Assistance Group, who will examine the invisible intellectual burdens racism places on non-white individuals. She explores the phenomena and stresses of double consciousness, or looking at one’s self through the eyes of others; and of code switching and its demands on people to alter themselves from one environment to another to be accepted. She will discuss how these phenomena impact well being and opportunity for those impacted. The event is virtually hosted by the AADC via Zoom.

A Special Thank You to Our Alumnae Outreach Volunteers
Fostering AADC alumnae connections. This is how we do it during a pandemic. Central to the mission of the AADC for 98 years, and one of the benefits of being involved with your alumnae association, is fostering AADC alumnae connections. During last spring, the AADC staff became very concerned about how the COVID-19 pandemic would affect our community. Due to the pandemic, we had to cancel in-person events, including our signature AADC Alumnae Reunion Weekend in June.
What did we do? The AADC staff requested the help of alumnae volunteers to connect with classmates to offer friendship, support and encouragement, and to keep them abreast of AADC updates and news.
What did we get? Dedicated alumnae who sprung into action! Many had wonderful conversations and greatly enjoyed reconnecting with sister alumnae. Others organized their own virtual class gatherings, which are ongoing, where alumnae throughout the United States and internationally participate and uplift each other’s spirits.
These volunteers embody what we mean by keeping our AADC Mission in Motion. Thank you very much for your help and leadership!
Let’s keep this going! We are looking for 20-25 alumnae volunteers from all age groups to be Outreach Volunteers between now and June 2021. Training is provided. Please contact Natalie Harrington ’87, AADC Director of Annual Giving, at nharrington@douglassalumnae.org or at (732) 246-1600 Ext. 14 for more information.

Impacting Their Lives

Share YOUR story with your alumnae sisters. Are you dealing with school changes for your children or grandchildren or have you completely revamped your business as a result of the pandemic? Are you unemployed? Have your grown children moved back home to quarantine with you? What’s new, different, challenging and worth sharing? We would love to hear from you. Put the AADC Mission in Motion While You Shop
It sounds like a rhetorical question, but do you shop online at Amazon? With more online shopping than ever during the pandemic, many people have upped their online shopping game. But did you know that every time you buy something, a small donation from that purchase can be sent to the AADC? AmazonSmile is a simple way to support your favorite charitable organization every time you shop, at no cost to you.
Start – or continue – shopping on Amazon and let the dollars mount up for the AADC! Please note that AmazonSmile donations to the AADC do not benefit NJC, DRC, Douglass or Rutgers. They benefit the AADC and help keep our mission in motion. Thank you.
