Garvin Maffett points out that Alice Green Burnette was among the Black Women Trailblazers in fundraising and philanthropy. He first met Alice in 2001, during his tenure as vice president for institutional advancement and college relations at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.
“Alice Burnette was my mentor and my career in institutional advancement would not have been as rewarding if it wasn’t for the mentoring and leadership given to me by Mrs. Alice Green Burnette. Thank you, Alice.”

Let’s not forget our brothers and sisters who paved the way for us. We follow in their mighty footsteps. They were the first to break the color barrier at every turn in the fundraising field. Let's call out their names, celebrate them, and never forget them. It's on their mighty shoulders we stand.
Send an email to AADO if you'd like to recognize a trailblazer of color who influenced you.

“Birgit’s calm and playful demeanor pushed me out of my shell. She encouraged me to share my ideas. She was a vocal supporter and advocate for me. She led with compassion and vision. She inspired me. Through her presence she gave me space and permission to once again find my voice and use it.”
The R.I.S.E. Fund was created in honor of Birgit's lifelong commitment to loving people. Please consider making a gift in support of the professional development of Black and Brown women in the United States and Canada by making a donation to the Birgit Smith Burton RISE Fund.
