Hello AADO members,

It's August. Black Philanthropy Month. I'm excited to turn my founder's space over to AADO member Jessica Ford of Cleveland, Ohio to share her thoughts on celebrating Black Philanthropy.

Birgit
The tragic deaths of so many in our community have been thrust in the spotlight around the world in recent weeks. The response has been tremendous as movements and groups to support black businesses and fund organizations fighting racial injustice have gained momentum. As we enter August and kick off Black Philanthropy Month, I am looking forward to celebrating Black Philanthropy and the many ways we give back to the community. When deciding how to support your favorite cause this month (and in the future), the importance of doing your research will continue to be critical in the months to come. Chronicle of Philanthropy recently did a feature, “ Huge Sums of Money Flowing to Racial Justice. Are They Going to the Right Place ?” to draw attention to the importance of exercising discretion so that money goes where intended.

Arts and Healthcare Fundraising:
from Grateful Patients to Patrons,
What Makes this Fundraising So Unique?

Program Description
For many years, we have heard the adage "the art and science of fundraising" and learned how to apply it to the field. But when it comes to fundraising  for  the arts and sciences (including healthcare), how does it differ from other sectors?

A panel of leaders (to be announced) will explain what makes fundraising for arts and healthcare organizations so unique, and why more professionals should consider these professional niches. They will share their professional journeys, and what soft, technical, and transferable skills are needed to successfully thrive in arts and healthcare fundraising. From grateful patients to patrons, this workshop is designed to explore the various specialty areas that professionals can consider as they navigate their careers. Whether you are just starting out your career or thinking about transitioning into a new sector, this conversation is designed for you.

Featured Panelists :
  • Cynthia Brandt Stover, President and CEO of the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health
  • Moderated by Angelique Grant, Ph.D., Senior Consultant and Vice President, Aspen Leadership Group and AADO Advisory Board Member

With  her vision to create the Rooted Collaborative, a global network of BIWOC fundraisers, Kishshana Palmer, CFRE has tapped into something VITAL. I returned to work re-energized after three days   (July 22-24) of "UPROOTED: The Virtual Stay-At-Home Retreat" created for Rooted Collaborative members.

UPROOTED offered the most rigorous array of content on far-reaching aspects of equity in the philanthropic space I have ever encountered in a stand-alone professional conference setting. Honing my theoretical and practical skills and knowledge of fundraising techniques were the icing on the cake.

Interwoven within 28+ sessions (including an Allyship track) were opportunities to connect socially with a concentrated group of 250+ dynamic BIWOC philanthropoids; a first in my 17+ year career.

Thank you, Kishshana Palmer and her team: Rochelle Sodipo, Tiffanie Woods, and Dre Brown for creating an unforgettable experience!
