Greetings AADO Members,
Whew! AADO has been very busy over the past few months. Check out some of the activities that have taken place:
Our annual AADO/CASE Conference on Diverse Philanthropy and Leadership in April was our most successful ever! The conference sold out a full two weeks ahead of the start date and post-conference feedback has been extremely positive. Currently, there is a list of 80 people who are ready to begin registering for the AADO/CASE Conference 2023 which, we are excited to announce, will take place in Atlanta, Georgia in late April. The exact dates will be announced very soon. Stay tuned!
AADO members turned out in record numbers at the AFP International Conference (AFP ICON) in early May. We estimate that nearly 60 members attended including the Men of Color in Development (MOCID) which led a well-attended session on the experiences of Black male fundraisers.
The AADO board of directors hosted its first in-person meeting in Washington, D.C., and focused on fundraising and AADO’s future. They will meet virtually two more times before the end of 2022.
The newly formed Rising Professionals of Color in Fundraising have met several times and coordinated with MOCID to host a social gathering during the AADO/CASE Conference. They are planning to choose a nonprofit organization to support utilizing their collective talent and fundraising knowledge. Currently, there are over 100 professionals involved with this new affinity group.
AADO is completing the second month of a partnership with Best Friends Animal Society on an exciting paid internship program. This is a pilot program that AADO plans to replicate with other organizations.
Special thanks to everyone who has been involved with these and other AADO activities. You make it happen. AADO depends on you through your time, talent, and financial support. Growing the pipeline of professionals of color, supporting educational needs, and providing opportunities to convene, celebrate, and support one another is what AADO is all about.
Warmly,
Birgit

Here are the results of the survey of AADO members regarding their experiences with search firms.
Top 3 search firms
and one quote that was
submitted for each one:
#1 Lindauer – “I really believed that they cared about me. I was guided and coached through the entire process. The experience was worth my time, even though I was not the chosen candidate. I will respond anytime they contact me and will tell my friends and colleagues to respond as well.”
#2 Aspen Leadership Group – “The search consultants at Aspen Leadership Group, are very helpful and understanding. They have helped me realize my potential for leadership roles. I once thought I had to accumulate a number of years of experience in philanthropy to move up. That is not the case. They showed me how to frame and explain my experiences to potential employers in search of what I can bring to the table. I am grateful for their expertise and patience.”
#3 The Alford Group – “I have worked with Brenda Asare, president of The Alford Group on numerous occasions. She is a person of integrity and is very knowledgeable about the nonprofit sector. In private and public conversations. I have found her to be discrete, knowledgeable, and discerning. She is committed to DEI, and cultivating and supporting development professionals of color.”

La June Montgomery Tabron, president, and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, recently celebrated 35 years of continuous service on behalf of vulnerable children and families. Beginning her tenure in 1987 as the first person of color to be hired full-time by the foundation, she became the first woman and African American named CEO in 2014. Today, she leads an organization where people of color comprise 49% of staff, 50% of executive leadership, and 67% of the board of trustees.
“I think a lot has changed in philanthropy over the 35 years I’ve been involved,” said Tabron. “Probably the biggest thing that has changed is the language. When I started in 1987, you couldn’t say the words racial equity. You couldn’t talk about racism."

The importance of stepping away.
Everyone must take some time to fully unplug from work. We all need a few days to just breathe. Laugh. Rest. Relax. We have to fully unplug from work and the regular tedious activities of our everyday lives. What are your summer plans to focus on you, your family, and your friends? Self-care is so important. Send a picture of what you did this summer to take a break. We will share in the July, August, and September AADO Newsletters.

Update on AADO’s First Internship Partnership
In April, AADO and Best Friends Animal Society announced a new partnership to provide support and counsel to Best Friends as they pilot a paid internship program. AADO’s Executive Director and Founder, Birgit Burton, met with Best Friends’ Development interns Zoë and Kristen to welcome them to the program, get to know them individually, and discuss their career goals. To foster their professional growth and involvement in the development field, AADO has sponsored 1-year AFP Young Professional memberships for Zoë and Kristen!
Another exciting update is that Zoë applied and was selected for one of Best Friends’ Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Councils. The councils are comprised of staff, volunteers, and interns who have stepped forward to help lead Best Friends' DEI efforts. Council membership requires a 1-year commitment, which means Zoë will continue to contribute her unique insights and perspective to Best Friends after her internship has ended. Stay tuned for another update in the AADO July Newsletter.

How can your organization get support from MacKenzie Scott– she’s already given away $12 Billion?
By Birgit Burton
I have received over 40 emails since last fall from AADO members asking if I know how to get a piece of the McKenzie Scott pie of support. My answer is, “No!” I know many who have received a piece of that pie, but their stories don’t include crumbs that can be followed to get on Scott’s radar.
Here’s what I have learned:
- Many of the nonprofits that received an award had a strong pre-existing relationship with Scott.
- For many other nonprofits, the award came without warning. The awards are usually unrestricted, and the nonprofits simply received notice by email (some CEOs received a phone call).
-
She is nonresponsive to traditional approaches and operates much more like a Donor Advised Fund (DAF). DAFs are not public entities, so there’s no application process unless the donor decides to make the process public, which Scott has not chosen to do.
- Her funding operation has no known address or website.
- She has a “team of advisers” which helps her give her wealth away faster.
- Her team’s focus has been on identifying organizations with strong leadership teams and results.
- Her priorities are to those operating in communities facing high projected food insecurity, high measures of racial inequity, high local poverty rates, and low access to philanthropic capital.
So, the answer to getting support from MacKenzie Scott is to just hang in there - she will find you if you fall within her funding priorities.
