Dear AADO members,

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, I reached out to my good friend Marco Corona, chief development officer at International African American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina, and asked him to share an important distinction we all should be mindful of about Latinx and Hispanic cultures.
“We are not a monolith, we're not one big group. We're actually a collection of multiple cultures, nations, and ethnographies from all over. For instance, not everyone speaks Spanish. In Brazil, you have Portuguese, and then in certain parts of Latin America, you have various indigenous dialects or languages. The fact that we are not monolithic makes it more difficult sometimes to engage and fundraise from the Latinx community. That’s why it is so important to be curious when you're dealing with philanthropy. You have to ask questions and do some research or read up on the Latinx coalition. We are seen as other by the mainstream culture--we seem to speak the same language, we seem to have very similar foods, and the difference between music like vallenato and cumbia seems subtle (but they are a world apart to a Latinx ear). Truth is, we ARE similar, BUT there are some very stark differences, and we love celebrating them. In some ways, we want to be lumped together--there's strength in numbers--but it's equally important to us that others understand our differences and our various cultures.”

DEI Language Survey
AADO receives, on average, 15 calls a month with questions from fundraisers, organizations, and allies centered around diversity and inclusion. Recently, most of the questions have been about DEI language - acronyms. “Which acronym should we use?” "Are certain acronyms offensive?” "Does one acronym serve as more of a demonstration of our values and commitment to DEI work over another?”

In answer, AADO recommends trainings and explains that it really is the organization’s decision based on what the leadership, staff, and board hope to accomplish.

Last month we posted a survey link to find out what DEI language AADO Members are most often using. Following are the results:

563 AADO Members responded (thank you):

Top 3
#1 - DEI
#2 - D&I
#3 - IDEA

The other acronyms not so frequently used are: JEDI, DEIB, & DIB. Others added to the list: EIB, DEIB, DHEI, and IDEAL.

Thank you to everyone who participated.

We all need courage to chase justice.

Courage comes easier when you know who you are and what you stand for, but especially when your behaviors align with your beliefs.

Courage also plays a vital role in developing trust. When we choose courage over comfort, we inspire trust. And trust is the foundation of any good relationship, even the relationship we have with ourselves.

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Committed $46M over the next five years to support genomics research at four historically black medical colleges in the US. Recipients of the money include Charles Drew University College of Medicine in Los Angeles; Howard University College of Medicine in Washington D.C.; Meharry Medical College in Nashville; and the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. Each institute will receive a total of $11.5 million under the initiative — dubbed Accelerate Precision Health — which will be used to expand research opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students. The funds will also help support the creation of a new master of science program in genetic counseling, support recruitment of anchor faculty in genomics, and fund state-of-the-art tools for data handling, storage, and analysis, among other things.
Recently AADO has received inquiries from members about the report produced in 2018 by Cause Effective so we decided to include it again in the AADO Newsletter - Enjoy!!
In 2018, Cause Effective launched a year-long field-learning project to explore questions of racial equity through the lens of the development director. As the primary person responsible for fundraising, the development director serves as a pivot point toward institutional advancement and sustainability.
