Who Am I?

My place of birth is:
Toledo, Ohio
 
My hobbies are:
Exercising really early in the morning, baking, reading, and online shopping.
 
The last good book I read was:
Calypso by David Sedaris
 
My oddest habit is:
Engaging the checkout employees in conversation at the grocery store. It's not always well received, but that doesn't stop me.

Device I couldn't live without:
A blow dryer. My hair is a fright without that useful tool.
 
My greatest accomplishment outside my profession:
I don't know if this is "the greatest accomplishment," but being able to pay for my only child to go to college so he wouldn't have a big school loan debt feels like a noteworthy achievement.
 
The reason I got into advertising/marketing:
In general, I like people. So that, coupled with my aversion to math, led me to pick up a camera in high school which led me to majoring in photojournalism in college. My first full-time job was as a photographer at the University of Toledo where I got to meet and get to know all sorts of different people. I enjoyed talking to people and learning things about them and what they did.
 
Biggest influences on me professionally:
Probably my dad who was a journalist and then later a director of public relations.
 
My greatest unfulfilled ambition is:
Being a photographer for Rolling Stone Magazine
 
When nobody's looking, I like to:
Dance and sing. I sometimes think I'd be good at Karaoke, but I wouldn't be able to handle being up in front of people whilst doing it.
 
The one thing I really want the world to know about me:
I like shoes and chocolate so if Stuart Weitzman or Godiva needs someone to test their products, I'd be happy to handle their market research.
 
Best thing about being an AAF Toledo member:
Getting to be a part of a fun group of people who are interested in elevating the profession.

A Message From Our President

Happy September!
 
AAF Toledo began its membership year on July 1st. Only two months into the year and we have already had one major event, AdBASH! The rain flirted with the downtown volleyball courts all evening, but luckily we stayed dry another year! Be sure to check out our Facebook page for pictures of the event. Don't forget to share your pictures of the event and tag AAF Toledo!
 
While the AdBASH volleyball tournament did not see rain, unfortunately our board retreat did and had to postpone the Handlebar portion. While it rained outside, several board members met at Rustbelt Coffee to go over and discuss the organization's 2018-2019 goals. We had some great discussion on how to streamline some internal processes, as well as plans for a new creative event this year. Details on the new creative event will be announced in the near future.
 
Our annual Internship Event will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, Perrysburg on Saturday, November 3rd. The Internship Event is a collaborative effort between AAF Toledo, the Press Club of Toledo, and PRSA Northwest Ohio. This event brings together students, professionals, and prospective employers for a unique networking and educational experience. There are several sponsorship opportunities available. If you would like to become more involved within the club, we have several committees that could use your help! "I love my job!" exclaims Hope Sowders pretty much every day of the week.  As Business Development for Mohawk Fine Papers, she consults with end-users, creatives and printers to get brands noticed by using print along with digital forms of communication.  Covering many different industries, Hope has worked with brands like Mazda, Audi, Porsche, Blanton's, The Slate Collection, RJ Reynolds, St. Elizabeth Hospital, University of Cincinnati, Maverick (can't leave out the chocolate)... and that was just last year.  In her spare time she loves all things DIY and no project seems to scare her.  She can often be found tasting food at the newest local farm-to-table restaurant, walking her dog (with whom she is totally obsessed) or working on the 1899 house she is rehabbing with her sister.

The Internship Event
Panelists Announced
 
Members of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) of Toledo, Press Club of Toledo, and Public Relations Society of America Northwest Ohio have selected their six-person panel for the upcoming 4th annual Internship Event on November 3 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Perrysburg.
The panelists include: Brigette Burnett - Host & Producer of the Daily Downtown, Buckeye Broadband; Kate Fineske - Vice President of Engagement and Brand Strategy, United Way of Greater Toledo; Scott Grosteffon - Marketing Manager, Impact Products; Michael Hirsh - Account Director, Hanson Inc.; Daryl Layson - Marketing & Communications Associate, Dana Incorporated; and Bill Sattler - Partner, Madhouse.
The Internship Event is a networking event and Q&A panel session that gives students the opportunity to engage with local professionals across the communications, marketing, public relations, graphic design, and media industries. Through these sessions, students will learn how to become the ideal internship candidate to help pave the way for their future careers. Recruiters from local companies will be also available to discuss career opportunities with graduating students.
The Internship Event brings together students, professionals and potential employers from the Toledo area. The event is designed to prepare and educate students as they begin their professional careers, helping them to find and excel in internship positions.

Silver Medal Award Nomination


The Silver Medal Award was established in 1959 to recognize men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and who have been active in furthering the industry's standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern.

We're looking for candidates for the 2018-2019 Silver Medal Award. Your help is needed by submitting a name of an advertising professional you feel should be considered for this most prestigious award.

To help in guiding your nomination of a person who has made outstanding contributions to the advertising profession, please review the list of prior Silver Medal Award recipients and necessary criteria. ( online form)

The selection committee (past 3 Silver Medal Award recipients) may not know your nominee, so please provide AS MUCH INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE.

AAF Announces 2019 National Student Advertising Competition Sponsor, Wienerschnitzel

WASHINGTON DC, August 6, 2018-The American Advertising Federation (AAF) is excited to announce Wienerschnitzel as the corporate sponsor for the 2019 National Student Advertising Competition ( NSAC). 
The NSAC tasks AAF college chapter teams to develop an integrated marketing campaign and a 20-minute presentation in response to a real-world marketing challenge facing Wienerschnitzel. 
Founded in 1961 with a single location in Southern California, Wienerschnitzel has grown to be the world's largest hot dog chain serving more than 120 million hot dogs a year. "We are honored and delighted that Wienerschnitzel was selected to be the client in this year's National Student Advertising Competition. It's going to be amazing to have the brightest minds at the top colleges work on our business." said Doug Koegeboehn, Chief Marketing Officer. "We feel the marketing challenge that we are going to put before them is quite unique and unlike any other in the long history of this competition. We look forward to implementing the students' work, which should have a definite positive impact on our brand and the industry as a whole." 
Approximately 150 colleges participate in the educational program, representing thousands of students steeped in the discipline of advertising and marketing. Over the course of two months, participating teams are narrowed down to the top eight. The finalists will pitch their campaign one last time to compete for the national title during the AAF's National Conference, ADMERICA, at The Diplomat Resort in Hollywood, FL, June 5-8, 2019
