Message From the Editor

By: Rod Firoozye, AAML Newsletter Editor

Hello AAML Fellows and friends,

As we progress through October, many of us prepare to celebrate Halloween, a fun and sometimes spooky time for children and parents alike.

But while Halloween brings playful scares, many of our clients face something far more serious: the lasting effects of real trauma in their lives and relationships.

So, what is trauma?

According to Merriam-Webster, trauma is “a disordered psychic or behavioral state resulting from severe mental or emotional stress or physical injury.”

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), released in 2013, expands on this definition by identifying several trauma and stressor-related disorders, such as acute stress disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder.

We often hear the phrase that a certain doctor lacks “bedside manner.” The same idea applies to family law attorneys who fail to recognize the effects of trauma on their clients. Many clients are coping with profound emotional distress, and it is crucial that we understand how trauma can affect their ability to process information, make decisions and participate meaningfully in their cases.

Trauma-informed practice (TIP), an approach long embraced by health care providers and educators, can also play a vital role in family law. This month, we will explore how TIP principles can be applied in our field to improve client communication, reduce re-traumatization and enhance the overall quality of advocacy.

We are pleased to feature several insightful articles illustrating why understanding TIP should be an essential part of every family law firm’s culture.

Thank you for your continued support of the AAML Newsletter. We look forward to seeing many of you next month at the AAML Annual Meeting in Chicago!

Warm regards,

Rod Firoozye

Only One Day Left: No Profile? No Renewal

With AAML's new, modern Fellowship portal, all of your Fellowship information is retained and accessible, but a new login is required to access your portal.

**All Fellows must create their new profiles before the 2026 renewals, which launch Oct. 15.**

Setting Up Your New Login

Head to the new portal to set up your login credentials.

Use the “Set Up an Account” (not “Log In”) tab in the pop-up window when logging in for the first time. Please enter your first and last name, email address and a new password. Your password does not need to match your previous AAML password login.

You will receive an email to verify your email address and complete your account setup. Make sure to check your spam folder if you do not receive it.

Setting up new login credentials is required to activate your login. Once your account has been set up, you may navigate to the “Log In” tab. Without an account, you will not be able to renew your Fellowship or access your Fellow benefits.

View this how-to video for step-by-step instructions, or contact the AAML National Office if you need support in setting up your new profile.

AAML Foundation Update

Annual Meeting Events and Billable Hour Campaign

The AAML Foundation thanks all the donors who participated generously in our annual Billable Hour Campaign. These donations will enable the Foundation to fund and award approximately $322,000.00 in grants this year to charities all over the country. This represents the largest amount of grants given in one year since the inception of the Foundation. The 2025-2026 grant recipients will be announced next month.

We look forward to thanking each of you at the Foundation Reception at the University Club during the upcoming Annual Meeting. The Foundation has much planned for attendees.

Fellows in Action

AAML Fellows have an opportunity to submit up to three published works to be displayed on the AAML website to showcase their thought leadership and expertise.

Sharing research, articles or papers not only highlights your individual contributions to the practice of family law, but also demonstrates the caliber and highest standards of practice within the AAML Fellowship community. This is a benefit available only to AAML Fellows. It positions you among esteemed peers and fosters greater visibility for your thought leadership and expertise.

To submit your works, log in to the Fellowship portal.

Showcase Your Expertise: Contribute to the AAML Newsletter

Share your knowledge, elevate your profile and position yourself as a recognized expert in your field. The AAML Newsletter offers a valuable opportunity for Fellows to highlight best practices, offer fresh insights and reflect the forward-thinking work happening at their firm — all while contributing to the broader conversation shaping our profession.

Consider yourself a leader in one of the below practice areas? The Newsletter Committee invites you to submit an article on:

  • Staff management when you're out of office
  • End-of-year to-do lists/compliance check-ups
  • Or other family law related topics

If you're interested in submitting an article or would like more information, contact the AAML editorial team at editorial@aaml.org or fill out the Contributor Interest Form.
