Oh… the Celebrations. We are delighted that we can Celebrate Juneteenth all month long… no, dare we say…All Year Long. As Larry Starks says, Juneteenth is a movement, not a moment! Enjoy some of the wonderful activities that you can still catch this month.

June 19th – Head to Kino Park! You don’t want to miss this Juneteenth City Wide Celebration! So, you may have missed a few things but there is still time, June 19th and June 21st sponsored by the Tucson Juneteenth Committee.

Happy Father's Day Weekend!

Tuesday, June 17th | 6 – 8 PM

Join AZPM for a virtual screening of this powerful film followed by a discussion led by Larry Starks, President of the Tucson Juneteenth Board.

JUNETEENTH: FAITH & FREEDOM this film follows the journey of a black man who is troubled by the legacy of American slavery and the misuse of Christianity to justify it.

He travels throughout Texas and discovers how the Juneteenth holiday reveals a resilient hope that empowered the formerly enslaved and their descendants to fight for freedom in an often-unjust society.

Garden-to-Table: Cooking Traditions from the African Diaspora

Join us for an evening of community cooking and storytelling rooted in African American food traditions. This workshop will be led by Stephanie Daniel and Sidney Engs, along with Mission Garden volunteers and members of the Africa in the Americas Garden committee. Together, they’ll prepare and share a meal using ingredients grown in the Africa in the Americas Garden, celebrating generations of food traditions from across the African diaspora and their deep roots in Tucson. Learn how these traditional foods connect us to land, culture, community, and memory.

Tea Cakes and Holidays!

Help Make Tea Cakes the Taste of Juneteenth!

It is always so interesting to find out what each of us and our family’s have used to celebrate culture. Well, Shirley Sprinkles (a Dunbar graduate) contacted the museum and wanted to share a story about a woman whose family historically celebrated and used teacakes!

I love hearing stories about how we use food to bring us together to celebrate.

A special book signing and presentation of The Backcourt by Marquez Price

I am Marquez Price and I am reaching out to spread the word about a meaningful event that blends literature, legacy, and community uplift.

On Saturday, June 28th at 2 PM, I’ll be hosting a special book signing and presentation for my bestselling book The Backcourt at Grassrootz Bookstore in downtown Phoenix—the largest Black-owned bookstore in Arizona and a vital space for culture and education.

The Backcourt tells the powerful story of two former high school basketball phenoms and the divergent paths their lives take. It’s a tribute to friendship, consequence, and community, deeply rooted in Black history, the crack era, the prison industrial complex, and the long shadow of systemic injustice.

This event will also serve as a key filming day for the documentary currently in production based on the book. A professional videographer will be capturing the experience as part of the visual storytelling we’re creating around The Backcourt and its themes.

I’m chartering a vehicle to take 20 people from Tucson to Phoenix for the event. I’m covering transportation and food, and I already have 10 people confirmed. I’m currently seeking 10 more attendees who would benefit from this experience—students, educators, artists, athletes, or community members.

It’s a rare chance for folks in Tucson to be part of a statewide cultural event that amplifies our stories and voices.

All the best,

Marquez Price
