We’ve had a busy and exciting few weeks here at the African American Museum of Southern Arizona! On February 27, 2025, we were honored to host Mayor Regina Romero, who visited the museum with Anna and her staff. During their private tour, we had the opportunity to share some of the rich history of Southern Arizona, and the mayor was surprised to learn about Estevan Park and Estevan the Moor. Estevan, a slave of the Spanish, was one of the first to survey the land in what is now Tucson.
We were happy to highlight an important piece of African American history in our region. In addition to the mayor’s visit, we’ve been hosting several other exciting events.

We were also delighted to receive a beautifully printed version of Robert Colescott's George Washington Carver Crossing the Delaware, generously donated by his son Cooper Colescott. This donation adds an important piece of art to our collection and further enriches our exhibits. Cooper also provided us with one of his original paintings inspired by our story of the CROWN Act!

We have a 1997 Jackie Robinson commemorative coin and a local story about him. You can learn more about an impactful story from Tucsonan Irma Sherwood Moran on our website.
During the students visit, and thank you Rose Taulton for helping out, we shared the inspiring story of Ruby Bridges and discussed how these historic figures continue to shape the fight for equality.

Drowning is a leading killer of American children.
According to the CDC, African- American children drown at a rate nearly three times higher than their Caucasian peers.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
Early Detection saves lives!
| | |
|
|
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in both men and women, and early detection is crucial for successful treatment.
Regular screenings, such as colonoscopies, can significantly reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer.
Individuals at higher risk, such as those with a family history or certain medical conditions, should consult with their healthcare provider about appropriate screening recommendations.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has terminated the lease for the Barack Obama Presidential Library near Chicago as part of a broader stroke to end thousands of federal contracts and hundreds of leases. According to DOGE's statement on its website, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), which oversees presidential libraries and records, has canceled its $1.48 million annual lease with the Obama Presidential Library. DOGE claims that this move will result in savings of $740,457. The Obama Presidential Library is the 14th facility managed by NARA as part of the network of presidential libraries.
