October 2021
2012 Hands On Header
Dear AAOMPT Members,

As we approach the end of the year, our minds start to drift to the holidays and the requisite holiday functions. No matter what you celebrate, this is often a time when families and friends plan events or gatherings. It is also a busy time, and many of us may need to participate in these events virtually. Our annual AAOMPT conferences are no different. It was wonderful to see so many of you at the 2021 AAOMPT Annual Conference in Cleveland. While I am grateful that we could gather in person again, I am also thankful that we could provide virtual options for those who could not make the trip. It only took a pandemic to help us see additional avenues for connecting. Again, this year, the conference captured everything we have come to expect. It was evident that attendees were happy to come together to share knowledge, make connections, and be inspired by world-class speakers, peers, and experts.

In addition to recognizing our new Fellows, we were thrilled to introduce two new annual awards. The Innovation Award recognizes an individual whose achievements have promoted excellence through extraordinary innovation in clinical practice, technology, education, care models or advocacy. The Emerging Leadership Award is for a person who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership in service early in his or her physical therapy career to promote and make recognizable contributions to AAOMPT. Our new Fellows and all award winners will continue to be highlighted in Hands On and on our website. I am so appreciative of the commitment of our members to our mission; excellence in OMPT practice.

Another first for our conference was the introduction of the World Café methodology for hosting large group dialogue. This format for discussion focused on AAOMPT’s current strategic plan and the role outreach and awareness play in the future of OMPT. The suggested next steps derived from the World Café will be published in the December edition of the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy.

The 2021 conference was a great success, and we are so grateful to everyone who helped make it possible! A special thank you to Megan Donaldson, our amazing Conference Chair, the Conference Committee, and P&N Association Management. The effort they put into planning, developing new ideas, and engaging at the conference dramatically contributes to its success.

We hope that you were able to meet new members, connect with old friends, and engage in a professional community that felt like family.

Thank you for being part of it! See you next year in San Diego!

Dear Members of AAOMPT,

It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of Cliff Fowler. Cliff was a pioneer for Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy. He was an incredibly intelligent, kind, and talented physical therapist. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and our colleagues in AAOMPT who knew him well along with members in the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapists (CAMPT). Erl Pettman has shared a tribute and his words speak to the nature of this great manual physical therapist.

A beautiful person and amazing clinician has passed into legend

It is with a heavy and sad heart that I inform you all of the passing of my dearest, closest friend Cliff Fowler. Cliff peacefully passed away early morning Saturday 23rd of October.
My relationship with Cliff began in 1974 when I went on an acupuncture course he was teaching in Kingston, Ontario. I was immediately taken in by his unique clinical charisma and knowledge. We bonded on that course and became close friends and kindred spirits for the next 47 years.
It was an inescapable fact that Cliff was an innate innovator. New clinical ideas and philosophies seemed to flow effortlessly from his brain and this energy was to overflow into people like myself, Diane Lee, Jim Meadows, Carol Kennedy and so many others. He was certainly the energy behind Canada’s clinical ‘innovative years’ between 1974 and 1994. During this time, along with his lifelong buddies David Lamb and John Oldham they developed the cervical and lumbar “Scanning examinations” which would become the foundations of the assessment procedures within the Canadian Orthopaedic Division.

I moved to Abbotsford BC in 1978 and we became neighbors in the same town. So, for the next 43 years we could work together clinically, research together and socialise together. Cliff had an inexhaustible appetite for thinking and talking about manual therapy. Our wives quickly banned us from discussing work when we went out for dinner. As recently as a month ago he was explaining to me how he believed the biomechanics of the SIJ was completely different in weight bearing and non-weight bearing. He sometimes exhausted my brain with his developing ideas. What a wonderful mind!

I am sure Cliff will be referred to as one of our clinical ‘giants’, as indeed he was. I prefer to look at him as a clinical force. A force that would forever change an entire generation of orthopaedic manual therapists in the United States and Canada. Through those of us fortunate enough to have him as our mentor that force will continue to influence future generations to come.

My sincerest condolences go out to his wife Pat, sons Rick, Dave and wife Kelly, and grandkids.

And now, the hardest words I have ever had to write, “Goodbye my friend. A part of my heart has gone with you”.

IFOMPT Delegate Report
What a great conference! It was so wonderful to see so many of you in person again. I am already looking forward to next year’s conference in San Diego.

AAOMPT is currently discussing the proposed IFOMPT membership fee structure change for Member Organizations (MOs), Associate Member Organizations (AMOs), and Registered Interest Groups (RIGs). It has been proposed to change to a subscription fee structure considering membership numbers (</>200 members) and socioeconomic status of member countries (based on the World Bank Classification). This subscription fee structure will be relatively easy to apply and will significantly relieve the financial burden of small (<200 members) and low-income MOs, AMOs and RIGs, while simultaneously not having a disproportionally negative financial impact on the other countries. The vote will conclude by November 30th.

AAOMPT continues to consider the impact of the defeated IFOMPT name change. AAOMPT is staying in communication with IFOMPT and we are evaluating options going forward. We will continue to keep the AAOMPT membership informed as new information transpires.

Respectfully submitted,
Haideh Plock
