The Future Looks Bright!

The AARV's first time at the Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA) Symposium, hosted by the University of Georgia, was an amazing experience. Our University Liaison Dr. Jessica Bunch and I had a wonderful time talking with students about veterinary rehabilitation and sports medicine. Together with the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR), our booth had many, many students from all over the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and the Caribbean stop by to learn about the opportunities in this fast-moving field of veterinary medicine. Dr. Evelyn Orenbuch had a packed house for her AARV-sponsored lecture "Your Options for a Career in Canine Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation" with great questions from the students during the Q & A portion of the lecture. We look forward to meeting with students at next year's symposium hosted by Cornell University. The future looks bright indeed!

The next conference appearance for the AARV will be the AVMA convention in Washington D.C. August 2nd-6th. We will be hosting a booth in the exhibit hall during the convention. If you would like free registration in exchange for a few hours in the booth, contact Katie Neforos, our membership chair, and she will make it happen!

The AARV is also excited to offer a brand-new grant to our members! Canine Rehabilitation Institute is offering a $5,000 grant that INCLUDES their online course Introduction to Veterinary Clinical Research. I have taken this course and without a doubt the information I learned was instrumental in helping me write grant proposals, design and carry out a study, and prepare a manuscript for publication. This is an amazing opportunity and a great way to help bring your research ideas to life.

The AARV will be offering 4 additional grant opportunities to be announced later this year. Two grants will be available to all our members, one grant is specifically tailored to veterinary students and one is available to the ACVSMR alternative track residents. One of the core tenets of the AARV is to encourage and promote research in the field of veterinary rehabilitation and sports medicine and our competitive grants enable the important work that moves the field forward.

As always, I look forward to hearing from our members, so please reach out with any questions!

SPOTLIGHT PRACTICE
Holistic Veterinary Care

Holistic Veterinary Care in Oakland, California, was started in 2008 in order to provide much needed veterinary services that were not available elsewhere. The practice began with acupuncture and chiropractic services but quickly expanded to offer other modalities. Currently HVC provides rehab, acupuncture, chiropractic, herbal therapy, PEMF, stem cell therapy, hyperbaric oxygen, and more.

The rehab team consists of a chiropractor; 3 acupuncturists; 2 veterinarians including AARV member and practice owner Gary Richter, MS, DVM, CVA, CVC, CVWHM, and a veterinarian who is currently completing her rehab certification; AARV member Sandy Gregory, M Ed, RVT, CCRA, head technician; and 4 rehab assistants.

We've Been Updating the AARV Articles of Interest Database!

AARV has continued to update its searchable Articles of Interest Database, available to AARV members in the Members Area of its website.

The database now includes Articles of Interest from January 2018 through April 2019 and contains approximately 230 articles. We will keep adding more articles to the database each month. We also will continue to include links to our past Articles of Interest from 2010 to the present in PDF format. All Articles of Interest have been selected by AARV founder Dr. Julia Tomlinson because of their relevance to the field of veterinary rehabilitation.

To search the database, log in to the Members Area of the website and go to the Articles of Interest Database page. Enter a keyword, author's name, or other search term to begin your search. A list of matching article abstracts will be displayed. A link to the full version of the journal article will be provided if available.

AARV is continuing to add journal articles to the database each month to develop its usefulness as a research tool. Our thanks to Dr. Julia Tomlinson for selecting relevant journal articles each month and AARV Secretary Dr. Andrea Henderson for preparing the articles for the database.
