President's Message

Another Successful VMX Conference!

We have just returned from beautiful Orlando, Florida after a busy VMX conference that included a full-day lecture track sponsored by the AARV. Our lectures were well attended with many great questions. We thank our speakers: Stuart Napshin, Kelley Meyer, Drs. Andrea Henderson, Megan Ridley, Leilani Alvarez, Tari Kern, Jessica Waldman, and Evelyn Orenbuch. Blair Hooser, our student case study winner sponsored by Royal Canin, presented a fascinating case on "Rehabilitation Following a Femoral Head Ostectomy and Total Hip Replacement on a Bengal Cat." Our AARV grant winner Dr. Theresa Pancotto had her research presented by Alexandria Kelly on "Post-operative Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation for Reduction of Stifle Edema in Canine Patients Undergoing Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy." Dr. Jennifer Repac presented her research funded by our sponsor Dr. Buzby's Toe Grips on the "Effect of Dr. Buzby's Toe Grips on Lameness Scores and Client Specific Outcome Measures After Canine TPLO." Our John J. Sherman award, sponsored by Royal Canin, for excellence in veterinary rehabilitation was awarded to Dr. Pedro Rivera. Dr. Megan Ridley also received a plaque in appreciation of her amazing work as the 2018 AARV president. In addition, a heartfelt thank-you to our sponsors DogLeggs and GingerLead for donating raffle prizes for our annual membership meeting.

At our annual membership meeting, we reviewed our 2018 accomplishments and outlined our goals for 2019. We will continue to provide members with research grants, so look to the newsletter for upcoming opportunities. We will continue to foster relationships with our sponsors and plan to highlight them with social media contests. We will continue to work more closely with the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR) and develop a relationship with the Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA).

Our next event will be the Western States Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas from February 17-20. We will be in the exhibit hall at booth 825. I will be manning the booth on Monday, February 18 ... please stop by and say hello.

Lots to come in 2019, so read the newsletters, visit us at the conferences, follow us on social media and watch for research grant opportunities. As always, please reach out me or any of the board members with suggestions or questions. We always love to hear from our members!

AARV #TurnRehabRed Competition!

_TurnRehabRed image
Calling all AARV members! We all know February hosts Valentine's Day, a time for roses, wine, chocolate, and love. The AARV wants to see how you incorporate the color red into your rehabilitation photos. Get creative! Do you have holiday decorations up in your gym? Does a patient always use their favorite red ball during a hydrotherapy session? Did your rehab team accidentally all wear red socks on the same day? Do you only use red pens while you study for vet school finals? The heart-filled sky is the limit; simply show us how you can #TurnRehabRed!
Competition rules:
  • The contest begins on Friday, 2/1/19 at 8:00 am (CST) and ends on Thursday, 2/14/19 at 8:00 pm (CST).

  • Post a picture of an animal/staff member/building area where a red item is obviously displayed or explained.

  • Your image must be posted after the start and before the finish of the contest.

  • To be eligible to win you must be following the @rehabvets account on the platform the photo/video was submitted (Instagram/Facebook) as well as our generous donors to our prize basket, @petsuppliesplus & @medipaw

  • The photo must be from an AARV member account or a clinic account where at least one employee is an AARV member.

  • Please make sure your post is not private or we may not be able to see it and cannot include it in the contest.

  • You must tag @rehabvets and use the hashtag #TurnRehabRed in your caption.

  • The image with the most "likes" will win the prize basket thanks to #PetSuppliesPlus and #MediPaw!

VMX Success!

We had a great time at the 2019 VMX Symposium! Our annual meeting was highlighted by our first student case competition winner, Blair Hooser (Class of 2021) from Purdue University. She did an outstanding job with her report and presentation on "Rehabilitation Following a Femoral Head Ostectomy and Total Hip Replacement on a Bengal Cat." Congratulations also goes to Dr. Pedro Rivera, AARV's Industry Liaison, who received our John J. Sherman Award, sponsored by Royal Canin, for excellence in veterinary rehabilitation.
Special thanks to Royal Canin for their support in sponsoring the student case competition and award. We look forward to what next year's competition will bring.

Ajax Animal Hospital & Rehabilitation

The Ajax Animal Hospital & Rehabilitation team shares their lives with (at last count) 18 dogs, 36 cats, 6 horses and 3 rabbits! This shared understanding of the human-animal bond drives a deep commitment to preventing and treating companion animal pain and led us to open our Rehabilitation Service in September 2017.
Facilities of AAH&R include an open and friendly rehabilitation gym and fitness centre as well as a comfortable and spacious assessment and consultation room. Modalities like an underwater treadmill, Stance Analyzer, Class 4 Therapeutic K-Laser, TENS and NMES units, and extensive rehabilitation fitness equipment help all patients stay #fitforlife.
The AAH&R practice owner, Dr. Karyn Jones, experienced personally the challenge of controlling osteoarthritis pain for her active and playful Flat-Coated retriever, Lyvie, as she aged, and she now strives to keep her Miniature Long Haired Dachshund, Zelda, fit to limit injury by supporting her spine and joints.

Search the New AARV Articles of Interest Database!

AARV is excited to announce the launch of its searchable Articles of Interest Database, available to AARV members in the Members Area of its website.
The database starts with articles from the July 2018 Articles of Interest and contains approximately 100 articles. We will keep adding more articles to the database each month. We also will continue to include links to our past Articles of Interest from 2010 to the present in PDF format. All Articles of Interest have been selected by AARV founder Dr. Julia Tomlinson because of their relevance to the field of veterinary rehabilitation.
To search the database, log in to the Members Area of the website and go to the Articles of Interest Database page. Enter a keyword, author's name, or other search term to begin your search. A list of matching article abstracts will be displayed. A link to the full version of the journal article will be provided if available.
AARV will continue to add journal articles to the database each month to develop its usefulness as a research tool. Our thanks to Dr. Julia Tomlinson for selecting relevant journal articles each month.

Veterinary Technicians Can Make A Difference
by Sandy Gregory, M Ed, RVT, CCRA
AARV Technician Liaison

Animal physical rehabilitation (APR) is a rapidly growing field in veterinary medicine. Specialty hospitals, general clinics, and referral centers are providing these services. There are also more and more opportunities to learn and even become certified in APR. The AVMA has required and recommended skills that vet techs should know about rehab especially if they are currently going to tech schools. APRVT has a veterinary technician specialty that you can obtain in Physical Rehabilitation. The list goes on. Each one of us can be a part of this increasingly demanding area of medicine and its development.
Every day, every animal that we see, is different. We are challenged to be creative, methodical and clever with each one. The more we network, share ideas and keep learning, the better we can assist our veterinary team and patients. We can learn so much from each other.
Keep brainstorming and stay tuned for an exciting challenge.
Be sure to check out the APRVT website for places to connect. You can stop by our table at the Western Veterinary Conference February 19th to say "hi." We look forward to meeting you.
