President's Message
Uncertainty Ahead
As veterinary rehabilitation professionals begin in many areas to find ways to approach a return to operations under a "new normal" amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of uncertainty still remains. Many of our business practices and continuing education opportunities will be evolving as we navigate through the response to this lingering threat. We do not yet know what the near future holds as far as conferences, academic calendars, and other aspects of our lives that impact our careers and our passions.
Please keep in mind that we have a
link on our AARV website that will take interested individuals to
resources that we are continuing to gather that may be specifically of interest to veterinary rehabilitation professionals. These resources may include links and webinars designed to assist the practitioner in responding to this crisis from a veterinary rehabilitation business/practice perspective, as well as resources containing complimentary or low-cost continuing education for veterinary professionals. As these resources become available, we'll continue to build the page along with our emails and social media announcements. We understand that state and city guidance will vary across locations, and that recommendations may not be universally applicable.
Our partners in
ACVSMR have been providing support to students in the form of an excellent series of webinars in areas pertaining to veterinary rehabilitation. Be sure to see our
technician competition coming up soon as well. We have updated our
Grant Opportunities page to reflect the offerings for later this year and application guidance and timelines. We are expanding our link to training opportunities for certification for varied licensed professionals in veterinary rehabilitation. We are continuing to gather interested individuals' information for a speaker registry, so check out the
announcement in this newsletter as to how to join!
The AARV Board of Directors remains committed to serving our members with information about opportunities during this unusual time, and to sharing practice stories and tips from our colleagues. As always, we sincerely hope you and your families and co-workers are staying healthy and safe. We don't know what the next months will hold, but we will continue to share resources and support our members and colleagues as we are able.
Respectfully,
Andrea Henderson, DVM, CCRT, CCRP, CMFT, DACVSMR

TECHNICIAN CORNER
What My Dog Rudy Taught Me
by Sandy Gregory, M. Ed, RVT, VTS (Physical Rehabilitation), CCRA AARV Technician Liaison
|
|
|
Rudy and me during one of our visits in the clinic's parking lot.
|
Last month I took my dog Rudy for a root canal. He is 3 years old, and I wanted to save the tooth with the help of pet insurance. The procedure went well, but he had a rare reaction to Meloxicam and went into acute kidney injury. He ended up going to UC Davis for dialysis and more comprehensive care. Then, he had rare GI bleeding that resulted in a transfusion. As the saying goes, he is "a one in a million dog" to have survived how sick he was.
So here is what he taught me about being on the other end of the leash.
- When talking to clients, we don't realize how much people hold on to even little words like "good," "ok" or "great."
- Be thorough in explaining outcomes, how they might do in their appointments, and what to expect afterwards.
- People appreciate what we do, and we don't realize how much.
- Even though we know what we are talking about, you can never explain something too many times to clients about what to do.
- During these times of COVID, it is really important to make connections whenever able. Take more time to show the clients things through videos, handouts, emails, or even demos through the glass of the front door.
- The client on the other end of the leash loves their dog like no other.
Rudy is doing great, and I thank him, like all my other pets, for making me a better veterinary technician.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Focus on State Practice Acts: Rhode Island
by Theresa Pancotto, DVM, MS, MS, DACVIM(N), CCRP
Legislative Liaison
I'm going through each state at random and providing an interpretation of the acts to better guide individuals in managing physical rehabilitation as it pertains to their practice and state.
Interpretation
"Physical therapist" and like terminology is protected by the Rhode Island Physical Therapy Practice act. In the Veterinary Practice Act, the diagnosis of physical conditions, use of apparati/manual techniques, and manipulation are considered in the definition of practicing veterinary medicine. Complementary therapies are not specifically addressed.
Veterinarians practicing physical therapy should use the terms physical rehabilitation.
The Rhode Island veterinary practice act has few specifics. There are no explicit guidelines for human PTs who've trained in animal work. There is an exemption for nursing care that may allow human PTs to provide care for animals while under supervision of a veterinarian with a valid VCPR. See 5-25-7 (b) (5).
