Viva Las Vegas!

The AARV had a successful trip to Las Vegas for the annual Western Veterinary Conference (WVC). Our booth in the exhibit hall was well attended with more than 150 veterinarians, technicians and students coming by to visit and learn about our organization and veterinary rehabilitation. Thanks to all our current members who stopped by to say hello.
Our next event will be the Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA) meeting. This is an annual gathering of veterinary students from the US, Canada, the Caribbean and the United Kingdom to enjoy an opportunity for fellowship, education and fun. Together with the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR), we are co-sponsoring a lecture by AARV member Evelyn Orenbuch, DVM, DACVSMR, on Saturday, March 9th at 2 pm entitled "Your Options for a Career in Canine Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation." In addition, with the ACVSMR, we will have a booth in the exhibit hall March 9-11 to discuss our organizations with students. All our student members are encouraged to attend the lecture (bring your friends!) and please stop by the booth and see the opportunities both ACVSMR and AARV have for you.
Thanks to all who participated in "Turn Rehab Red" contest ... so many amazing photos! Congratulations to the Animal Specialty Center and AARV member Kelly Murphy, DVM, MS, CCRP, SAMP, for the winning photo. We have so much fun with these contests and plan on many more throughout the year, so keep on the lookout.
As always, any questions please reach out and happy spring!

Integrative Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital

The Integrative Veterinary Medicine Service at Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital started as a stand-alone service in April 2017 with Dr. Jessica Bunch. In the years prior to her arrival, rehabilitation was offered at the university as an adjunct in-house service through their certified rehabilitation technician Lori Lutskas, LVT, CCRP. However, when Dr. Bunch started in April 2017, the university expanded to offer a fully comprehensive service model to accommodate not only other veterinary departments but also outpatients and outside referrals.
The Integrative Veterinary Medicine Service program at Washington State encompasses rehabilitation, acupuncture, herbal therapy and pain management services. They interact with students from all stages of the curriculum, whether it be shadowing essential staff, working on their own pets, or patient care/treatments through other clinical services. Since 2017 they have grown to offer an elective clinical curriculum for 4th year veterinary students involved in case work-ups, diagnosis, diagnostics, management, and treatments.

Search the New AARV Articles of Interest Database!

AARV is excited to announce the launch of its searchable Articles of Interest Database, available to AARV members in the Members Area of its website.
The database starts with articles from the July 2018 Articles of Interest and contains approximately 100 articles. We will keep adding more articles to the database each month. We also will continue to include links to our past Articles of Interest from 2010 to the present in PDF format. All Articles of Interest have been selected by AARV founder Dr. Julia Tomlinson because of their relevance to the field of veterinary rehabilitation.
To search the database, log in to the Members Area of the website and go to the Articles of Interest Database page. Enter a keyword, author's name, or other search term to begin your search. A list of matching article abstracts will be displayed. A link to the full version of the journal article will be provided if available.
AARV will continue to add journal articles to the database each month to develop its usefulness as a research tool. Our thanks to Dr. Julia Tomlinson for selecting relevant journal articles each month.

AARV Technician Liaison

Veterinary medicine is growing technologically with endless possibilities for advancement all the time. With that growth comes change and direction.

The APRVT has one of the newest VT specialties through NAVTA. The intent is to help obtain a higher level of recognition for advanced knowledge in the field of physical rehabilitation.

The mission of APRVT is to provide assistance in veterinary physical rehabilitation, encouraging veterinary professionals and colleagues to further their education, while improving the quality of animals' lives.

According to APRVT's code of ethics, the veterinary technician works in accordance with the individual state practice acts. Working under the direct supervision of a state licensed veterinarian who has an established veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) and has seen the patient recently. Patient care standards should model those described by the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians (AARV), and credentialed rehabilitation veterinary technicians shall strive to follow those standards.

Credentialed rehabilitation veterinary technicians are not to diagnose, prescribe, or perform procedures that are considered to be the practice of veterinary medicine; and will obey all individual state and regional laws and regulations pertaining to the field of veterinary physical rehabilitation.

Check out the APRVT website to view the complete mission and code of ethics that have been set for such high standards to promote the advancement of knowledge of physical rehabilitation for animals.
