President's Message

Congratulations to Grant Winners and New Board of Directors Members!

A huge thank-you to all who submitted grant proposals this year! Our first ever veterinary student grant winner is Blair Hooser from Purdue University. Blair is a member of the veterinary class of 2021 and she will be presenting her case study, "Rehabilitation Following a Femoral Head Ostectomy and Total Hip Replacement on a Bengal Cat," at the AARV annual meeting at VMX in Orlando in 2019. Blair's travel expenses and attendance at VMX will be sponsored by Royal Canin. Thanks so much to Royal Canin for supporting our student members!

Congratulations are also in order for the two $2,500 grant proposal winners. We had several grant submissions, and after a blinded vote by non-grant-submitting board members, we are happy to announce that Dr. Andrea Henderson and Dr. Cara Blake are the winners. One of the grants was sponsored by the AARV and the second by Purina. Dr. Henderson will be conducting a study entitled "The Effects of Physical Conditioning on Military Working Dog Performance." Dr. Blake's research will be "How Cavaletti Pole Height Affects Weight/Load Distribution During Therapeutic Exercise in Dogs." We are very excited to hear the results of their research at VMX 2020.

As a reminder, grants are available yearly to AARV members. This is a huge membership perk, and we encourage you to start preparing for next year's grants. Part of the AARV's mission is to support research that we can incorporate into practice. Help us promote this type of evidence-based medicine by performing your own study. And have it sponsored!

We have one remaining grant for 2018. The AARV-sponsored grant of $5,000 is still available for non-traditional ACVSMR residents. All submissions are due by December 1st, and the winner will present their research at VMX 2021. This deadline is right around the corner!

I'd also like to congratulate our three new BOD members who will be starting in 2019. Kathleen Neforos will be our new Membership Chair. Dr. Tari Kern will be our new Treasurer, and Sandy Gregory will be our new Technician Liaison. We're excited to welcome them aboard.

As always, please contact the AARV board if you have any questions, comments or suggestions.

Regards,

Blair Hooser
We are pleased to announce the winner of our first AARV Student Case Report Competition sponsored by Royal Canin. Blair Hooser, a veterinary student at Purdue University, was selected as our winner with her case report titled "Rehabilitation Following a Femoral Head Ostectomy and Total Hip Replacement on a Bengal Cat." Blair has won an expenses-paid trip to the 2019 VMX Conference in Orlando, Florida, and will present a synopsis of her case report during our AARV lecture track. See below for more about Blair and her interest in rehabilitation. Thank you to Royal Canin for sponsoring this competition and its continued support in the field of rehabilitation research and education.

Blair Hooser is currently a second-year student at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine. She is a member of several student organizations and is the Outreach-Chair-Elect for the Purdue therapy animal club, Pets for People, and President-Elect of the Student Chapter of the Society for Theriogenology.

This past summer, Blair was a Summer Research Scholar in the laboratory of Dr. Kari Ekenstedt investigating canine genetics. She has recently received a grant from the Theriogenology Foundation to perform another canine genetics research project in Dr. Ekenstedt's laboratory during the summer of 2019.

Outside of class, Blair is the Community Outreach Chair of the Greater Lafayette Kennel Club (GLKC) and an American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Ambassador. This summer, her club was the first in the nation to receive the AKC Public Outreach award. She is also an agility instructor for the GLKC and a project leader for the local county 4-H dog project. Blair trains her own dogs, papillons and border terriers, in agility, conformation, obedience, rally obedience, and therapy work.

Based upon years of experience training and competing her own dogs, she has focused on the need for rehabilitation specialists to treat injured canine athletes and help trainers and owners prevent injuries. Following graduation, Blair intends to specialize in theriogenology and rehabilitation services for performance canines.
